I’m writing a new story based on my own MOCs if anyone is interested in giving it a read. So far it’s only one chapter but I’m gonna work on it throughout the year. It’s about three double-spaced pages worth of reading so far so not too long. Let me know what you all think friends!

Yeah I think they never should have gone away from the figures having gear actions and never should have stopped with having the cheap collectible gimmicks (kraata, krana, masks, disks, etc.) People love collecting and children love bright colours. I think the darker and less varied colour palette of the Ignition Saga really left more to be desired, even if the sets were cool.

Some questions about the Kaukau. Which is the most rare out of the misprints, the light blue or yellow?

Also how the hell did they even get printed? I understand how the noble masks could have been printed in the mata colours since they were printing a lot of masks in those colours but afaik there’s no light blue or yellow masks that was made.
>>
>>10871560
As I understand they were the original colors for Kopaka and Pohatu's masks before they went with clear and orange.
>>
>>10870918
>>10871437
Cute. It's like the Twizz-Mole's pest control antics are just useful enough to make their destruction charming. Maybe their eyesight is extremely poor so when they're pursuing insects with their Twizzler (tm) they end up barging right through your home without noticing. Since they're not hostile the majority of Twizz-Moles consumed as food died falling from great heights as they accidentally burrowed out of the side of trees during a chase. They have one braincell and they use it to eat bug.
>>
>>10871560
>>10871612
Someone posted an article here a few months earlier. It was talking about how there was originally most likely meant to be only four Turaga sets (similar to what they did with Roboriders, 6 canister sets and 4 small sets), and the Kaukau was meant to be a mask for the Turaga.
Also, there was originally meant to be 8 masks for the Toa, and the Ruru and the Matatu was among them, so it explains the misprints. Then later they decided to give them to the two extra Turaga sets.

The pale blue and yellow are the actual plastic colors used for the gold and silver masks, the metallics themselves are a coating over the plastic, so either they were mistakenly left off for the first batch, or it was a running change made very early in production to make the masks consistent.

I don't think I've seen another person put 2 and 2 together on the origin, which I find strange because it was pretty apparent to me having gold and silver masks in hand, put them in front of a light and you can see the plastic color shine through. Mystery solved?

The gold and silver masks aren’t coated? They’re just made of gold and silver coloured plastic. If they were coated the paint would chip off around the connecter stud especially. They’re slightly transparent just cause of the nature of the type of plastic used, like the copper huna or Komau. In this early mask display you can see the yellow and light blue kaukau in the spots where Pohatus and kopakas kaukau should be. In my opinion the misprints were the early colour choices for the kaukau of those too but were changed last minute for whatever reason.
>>
>>10873914
I'm not willing to slice up my own masks to find out exactly how they were made, but regardless those translucents are the base colors for the gold and silver masks without their metallic added, whether that's from a coat or from mixing the pigment in.

The idea that these are completely unused mask colors doesn't match the other existing misprints, which are also shown there, speaking of which, the matatu is almost all Mata colors, except brown is replaced with light grey, Nuju's set mask, meaning there are 2 ko kanohi displayed, you wouldn't say those were the intended colors, so there's little reason to say the same for the kaukau.
>>
>>10873986
>but regardless those translucents are the base colors for the gold and silver masks without their metallic added,
Bullshit. Even with mettalic flakes added there's no way the colors would change that drastically. The gold would be way more of a bright yellow hue than what they are. What would the point be of using two seperate translucent tones of ABS prior to the metallic flake addition? They clearly are like trans clear or something with the metallic pigment added. If you want to keep insinuating otherwise, cite your sources because I'm not convinced.
>>
>>10873986
Anon... You're seeing light refracting off of the metallic flakes...

Speaking entirely anecdotally here because I don't know how Lego operates, but generally for the sort of use you're describing you use un-dyed plastic, look at pic related, it's a Gundam kit with its gold plating stripped off, and it's translucent plastic underneath with no dye. For the gold masks Lego would've almost certainly used a fully clear plastic to get the colour across, and while I'd say same for the silver I remember it being a pretty opaque colour so who knows.

Also, the flakes for metallics like that aren't just something you can leave out, if that happens that's a line wide issue that would stop production, not get accidentally released like that.

equally rare. No one knows but best guess is originsl Kopaka/Pohatu masks. The only ultrarare (that we know of) that was in 8530 is brown Komau (and yes brown Komau did come in 8530), the standard 14 misprints were common enough in early batch 8530
and the person saying they are related to gold and silver masks is wrong
Also there are bubble cheek and non bubble cheek versions of Kaukau, someone said this only applies to light blue but I think it applies to all colors
>>
>>10873986
you are a fucking autist the light gray matatu is there because the employee who put together the display grabbed one from a Nuju set then grabbed 5 other colors
ykk and lbkk were available late00-early01 (only early batch 8530, production of ykk and lbkk stopped early) whereas gold and silver masks werent til 02
ykk/lbkk were a change of mind and the Toa color Ruru and Matatu were a communication error between Bionicle team and the factory, the real mystery is brown komau and white huna, why do they exist (unlike yellow ruru yellow huna etc, the brown komau and white huna seem to not be prototype, literally bionicles biggest mystery)

>>10879167
I should clarify, I like to imagine that Spherus Magna looks like the Slizer planet, but the Slizers themselves and the whole Slizer story aren't canon. I just like imagining the world being seperated into biomes, with one 6th dedicated to the MU inhabitants and those that wanted to continue with their techno-futurist lifestyle while the rest of the world is very much subject to their respective elements and keeps things primitive. Energy biome is Earth/Lightning, beings live underground avoiding the storms or up in the clouds.

Why was Takua originally designed to be part blue? I think canonically, it's because he's really a Matoran of Light, and the weird colors were some sort of faulty disguise. But that explanation was made after the fact, right? Back when Takua was first introduced, was there an explanation for his weird colors?

I like your palette and the fists as thighs are clever. I've always wanted to use some of those somewhere. For the neck, maybe a counterpart pair of these? I'm not very experienced in articulating mata necks, but it's the same height and a start.

Still not perfectly happy with this (especially the legs) but im working with the pieces I have and its especially hard to rework the mata build in any way while keeping scale if you arent going to use lego/ other system etc etc pieces

I figured that the hook attaching directly to the hand like this (while the blue pistons extend out as a visual reference to the mata hand) is like a "climbing" mode. I'll make actual weapons (probably mostly guns) and an entire mecha ass nuva upgrade module with massive turbines or some shit next. I just literally ran out of black balljoints (I guess I could technically still try to scavenge a few from my built mata) that its going to be even harder to make that shit

Im somewhat satisfied with how decently non flimsy this is though, the only thing that feels remotely finicky is the balljoints that hold the limbs up simply because they dont have that much friction when attached to the rods. Weirdly enough the gears on the mata chest actually move on this thing while also having friction because I plugged 2 of those exoforce badguy hands from carapar behind the gears

Already did a small upgrade by using the transblue agori heads for the shoulders. Also built the coolest water themed bionicle gun ive ever seen and then instantly realized theres no way that this tiny bitch is going to hold or wield it properly so ill just incorporate it into the nuva exosuit, since thats probably going to be some gundam style exosuit bullshit with a shitload of wings and weapons anyway

Also its hilarious if youre particularly attached to those arms because I kind of threw them together in desperation mode while thinking ive ran out of parts that I want to actually use for the moc. They would probably fit on onua a bit better but the hose implementation would need massive work because it just looks messy as fuck and random on that original idea

And the (mostly) finished gun which I just dubbed Spearfish Reactor. At some point I just decided its probably a decapitated and repurposed boss rahi head as a superweapon but its definitely way too cumbersome to wield for a mata sized build so like I said its going to the nuva transformation in some form

And then the ultimate nuva spearfish dragoon firing on all cylinders
this is definitely way more fiddly than id like and maybe even slightly incomplete because the tail has almost no movement range into the only direction where it would really be necessary (up) and the legs are really starting to need piston support which I was too lazy to incorporate. The cannons are pretty overkill on purpose but they look a bit more cool irl than in these shitty phone pics especially when you realize that the nuva parts kind of "open up" as if they were coming out from inside them
I finally got my Tahu.
Funny thing, the first Bionicle I ever had was a rahkshi given to me by my dad. He said that it was a hero and the glowing eyes was to catch bad dreams (I had a bad case of night terrors). That night I had a really bad night terror and never sleeped with the rahkshi out again, I put it deep in my lego box and put something heavy on it. Later I found out rahkshi were actually the bad guys and I felt betrayed that my dad would lie to me or didn't care enough to even see if they were good or bad guys.

One of my earliest memories. Born 1999, so must have been 4-5 and it was a handmedown of some other kid

This has to be the best (and most overambitious) moc that ive ever made, so i cant touch the bin again for at least 10 years. I'll write down my ideas and process (and some of the biggest failures) here for a bit

So basically this is pretty much what G3 would ideally be for me, articulation combined with "attachments" and all sorts of interesting weapons/ weapon systems. Or at least that's how I started envisioning this project pretty fast after I was holding the first version of the mata model

Both very happy and a bit iffy about it, in the final version I caved in and used a metru skull because its far easier to plug onto the mata core in a way that doesnt constantly pop off/ become limited in articulation. Considering the rest of the changes it fits visually and size wise though without looking out of place at all

I particularly like all the transblue parts on this, I added bohrok eyes to the arms too (while altering the tube threading) in the final version to work a bit better. The scuba ass harness shes wearing is also better implemented in the final form while retaining all of its advantages (aka it stays secure while also being able to shift around for the thighs to go under). I also more blatantly separated the hook into this kusarigama style thing that's obviously used for riding underwater rahi sandworm style

before I move onto the nuva form ill "interject" this tiny project that ended up accidentally happening on top of the toa itself. Since I created that spearfish-like looking piece earlier I then ended up turning the entire exosuit into the spearfish reactor dragon, they all kind of plug onto a central joint system that holds the head and the fin/turbine section, and then the separate articulated tail with "reactor" looking gears and shit like from some podracer (which doesnt look nearly as impressive here as it potentially could because surprise surprise it droops down with gravity). Obviously behaves differently underwater and gives a massive dragon shape

The biggest embarrassing failure here is that I also made some more additional pieces that I didnt even document because the end result was when I fully realized that I had gone too far (aka being able to conver the rahi head with the piston system attached to it into a tri pronged massive dragon hand where a krana gun emerges from the middle, and it would replace one of the arms ((heavily inspired by elemental hero flame wingman)). Just way too ginormous and heavy for what is still a mata sized figure so I gave up the moment I plugged it on with the rest of the "upgrade" and tried to pose it

And then the final form. Cant settle on the perfect name that gives off the vibe of a google translated takara tomy product yet so lets just call it ultimate gali nuva reactor dragoon. Both weapons and a 100e mask, high heel piston underwater turbine legs and the massive spearfish rahi head as a tail. The whole thing just kind of rests and straps on, so the attachment method isnt perfect but its sturdy ENOUGH especially for a display piece, its honestly less fiddly and delicate than the mata build itself because all the balljoints just want to easily come off from the axles theyre plugged onto. Posting a few pics of this one since i guess it deserves it

I do. I have a complete 2001 Bionicle McDonalds collection. Have all six figures with the original packaging. Have both Bionicle Happy Meal boxes, and I have the promotional comic book.

Almost all of it. The hazy muted yellows remind me of the green mist used a lot in the early 2000's cg like in the bohrok lair. The language sounds a lot like the rumbling speech in stuff like the hordika web animations. The mysterious story where you cant really get a grasp on the combination of technology/ nature / magic. The tonal differences between characters with a sense of humor (like matoran and most characters in divine cybermancy) and the more grand/ epic sequences and locales is also a slightly more abstract comparison that just adds onto the pile

Among them were a picture showing Master Tahu having a different mask and a hillarious drawing based on pic related that I miss. Shortly after the sets hit the shelves everyone in the fandom decided on their own to moc a humanoid Lord of Skull Spiders. I made one with an articulated waist and a mouth in his belly. The brit floor anon was so amazed that he posted a photo of his version ripped apart. It was the greatest compliment my mocs have ever received.

What other media similar to Bionicle would you anons recommend? If anyone hasn't played it yet, I'd recommend checking out Morrowind if you're looking for that 2001 Mata Nui vibe. There's a lot of similarities between Vvardenfell and Mata Nui, tonally and aesthetically.

>both take place on an island with a volcano in the center
>both are heavily influenced by tribal cultures with very striking and alien visual twists, though Bionicle goes with robots while Morrowind goes with giant bugs and mushrooms
>batshit insane lore
>both freature villains who hide underneath said volcano while plotting to usurp the power of god and use a giant robot to take over the world

What does everyone here think of the Robo Rider theme? Any Robo Rider enjoyers in the thread? I like this theme because of all the combiner models that are available to build. I like the Power/Onix combiner the most. I think it's neat that it uses it's canister lid as a shield.

This guy always had big combiner-model energy. It's as if they build him out of prototype Inika sets and then had to go "oh wait we never actually sold any of his components sets" but the marketing teams already had packaging and instructions ready to go for him anyway so they just went fuck it and sold it as some weird titan.

And slapped superfluous leg pistons on him for good measure to make sure everyone knows he's a titan.

and here's my MOC next to the old promotional material. I tried to build this MOC as faithfully as possible but I couldn't recreate a few things. The proto Toa had a completely different head mold that was never made, and it seemed to use a different method for it's head to body connection, but the low quality pictures and videos available makes it impossible to see what it looks like, so I had to improvise. Overall I would say my MOC is 95% faithful to the source material. I just hope one day Faber will show off a high quality model of this prototype so I can make my MOC look more correct.

>>
>>10894892
nta but some of the gold kaukaus are transparent and some are opaque. For some reason a difference was never distinguished, and nobody ever seems to talk about it. I've heard some say that's just how they came in 2001, while others insist they become more transparent the longer they're left out to bake in the sun, but frankly I have no idea. You'd think it'd be a bigger deal, since the trans one looks way better.
>>
>>10894675
Yeah, it's one of the oldest pieces of Bionicle media. I loved the design of the prototype Toa, and wanted to do a MOC of it for years. The thing that made this little project of mine take so long was the custom Vahi. I wanted my MOC to be as faithful as possible, so I wanted a Vahi made in it's prototype design. I found many seller willing to make me a black Vahi....using it's final design. I didn't want that, so I kept hunting. A year later, I found a mask maker on ShapeWays that was celebrating Bionicle's anniversary by making a bunch of masks in their prototype designs, Including the Vahi! I bought it immediately. A month later I got the mask and my MOC was finished! I really like it's quality, you could mistake it for a official Lego piece if it wasn't for the mask being in it's prototype design.

I had a Bionicle dream two days ago, but it sucked. I found store selling a bunch, but on closer inspection, they were all bootlegs.

Understandable. The Turaga and Bohrok VA are great sets.

A recurring form of cursed bionicle dream I have is a dream where I'll go to like walmart or something and find they have official reissued bionicle sets, but they're always wrong in some way. Like the sets are like 10% smaller for no reason or like they changed the masks to use a different connector.

The Nuva masks are the ugliest pieces of shit. Disgusting.
