JR Rail Pass is it worth it? Since JR has adjusted the prices for the pass, not really anymore, unless you want to travel by train very extensively. You can plug in your itinerary in the links below and compare prices to the JR Pass.

When should I spend 1 week in kansai region?

Late October:
> See Jidai Matsuri (not sure if worth it)
> Less crowded maybe?

Early November:
> Greater chance of seeing some fall leaves even though peak predicted for December
> Cooler? idk

No idea but I'm going for the first time and don't wanna waste the chance

It's only confusing if you can't use google maps and follow directional signs in the stations.
>>
>>2706581
Google gave me 3 different ways to get to the same place, 2 with similar name lines but slightly different and the one I thought would be the fastest is the slowest
>>
>>2706579
>I want to go from point A to B
>Put destination in google maps
>Pick a route, they differ by time, distance and cost.
>Get to station, go on designated platform told by google.
>Take train, get off when the announcer says the station name in english.

Now Osaka is confusing af. Google doesnt even reccomend platforms.
Shin Osaka is a maze, split between 6 levels and across 2 roads.
>>
>>2706579
brainlet, things like google maps spoonfeed you what lines to get and even what platform numbers
the only caveat is avoiding express trains which can skip stops

I wish it was 40. Can't find anything decent below 70/night.
Found one, 530 for 7 nights, but compared to Osaka or even Tokyo, it's more expensive. It's my fault though, it was cheaper one month ago but I was waiting for the answer of my friend, who in the end isn't coming unless he changes his mind again. But then too late for him.

>Spend 2 days in Nara, then 1 in Osaka
>>
>>2706737

>>
>>2706579

Reposting from /sqt/ thread since I figured out this might be better place to ask this.

Im currently at conference in Toyama, Japan and my flight back (from Tokyo Narita airport) got delayed by one day. It's not a problem for me to extend stay and my company knows about situation already. This means I will have one whole day to travel around Tokyo. I would like to ask, what places in particular would you suggest to visit? It's my first time in Japan and probably last one since I'm not wealthy enough to afford such travels. So far, after flight and check in, when I had few hours free at evening and next day before train depart, I simply walked around Ueno, including Ameyoko street and paid visit to National Museum, took photos at both day and night but just around that place. I'm mostly interested in historical places but also opportunities to took interesting photos, showing local atmosphere and culture, definitely not for shopping and such (many sites I saw basically recommended going shopping and eating, which is not very interesting for me).

Thanks for help and sorry for trouble.

fukuoka has the best nightlife district in japan IMHO. tokyo nightlife isn't even really THAT good desu its strongest aspect is how many options you get just due to the sheer amount of people living there. places like shinjuku, shibuya and roppongi are flooded with tourists which really drives down the cospa and overall japanesity - the best way i can describe it is that a lot of places in tokyo feel Reddit-tier with some gay contrived gimmicks meant to appeal to the instagram and youtube short audience, very similar to Seoul (ironically one of the most soulless cities ever when it comes to nightlife). osaka is on the whole good, but some parts of the city remind me a lot more of going out in hong kong or taiwan than "japan." fukuoka is almost perfect though, just enough luxury and grime without vulgarly bending over and spreading wide for gaijin money like you see in kabukicho. yes there are tons of chinese and koreans there but the overwhelming majority they assimilate and party as the japanese do rather than running the show like in osaka. yokohama is a close second for good nightlife.

then you have cities like nagoya and sendai with 1M+ population and you still struggle to find places that are open after 9 PM

Imperial Palace might be inaccessible, from what I checked, tickets are hard to get. Thanks a lot for the rest, already noted Gundam and Akahibara before but it only confirms the choice.

The sumo arena Ryogoku Kokugikan is located near Ryogoku on the Sobu Line. Even when sumo is not being held, you can enter the attached Sumo Museum for free.
There are many sumo stables in the area, and you can often see sumo wrestlers. In some stables, you can watch the training.
There are also tours to watch sumo stables training and have meals with the wrestlers. Also nearby are the Sumida River sightseeing boat dock and the Sumida Hokusai Museum.

So how exactly does the tax free shopping work? I've bought some stuff and they just gave me the discount at the register, but I'm reading online that I need to declare them at the airport to receive a refund? They also mention something about having to pay a consumption tax if you don't have the tax free items you bought with you, so do they have some system in place how they can know if I have tax free items on me, like from scanning my passport or something? Or can I just pack the stuff in my check-in like normal without worries? I just don't wanna get stuck in customs or have to pay some extra fees for nothing. My main issue is that I didn't keep the receipt for some of the items I got.

>>
>>2707012
go to a jazz bar. usually the jazz heads speak good English even if they're japanese. and if you don't find anyone to talk to you still get a good jazz show. the jazz in Japan is world class, and the jazz bars are very classy.

the alternative if you can't speak much japanese is to go to university neighborhoods and look for people who want to practice English.

>>2707006
basically you're supposed to leave it wrapped up until you leave the country, and you're supposed to keep all the receipts. this is to prevent fraud from people who are buying stuff but not leaving the country with it. most of the time customs won't even ask, but if they decide to single you out and you've unwrapped some stuff, or your receipts don't add up, then you can get some pretty big fines. but as a regular tourist there's not much risk of just opening the stuff up before you leave, I haven't heard of anyone getting hassled. the law is mostly in place to keep the evil Chinese scammers from not having to pay taxes.

>>2706998
nara is still touristy but it's a big open area instead of a crowded town so it's manageable. but I agree there is no reason to go to Kyoto as a tourist unless you have some niche stuff to see. all the regular destinations are way too overcrowded.
>>
>>2707016

>>
>>2707019
I'm not saying you should go to college I'm saying you should go to the bars near the universities because the young students are usually open-minded and educated enough to want to chat with some foreigner who only speaks English. but yeah just go to the jazz bar. Osaka has some great jazz clubs. I actually think the jazz scene in Japan is better than in America ... it's sad to say but there is really only good jazz in NYC now, and it's so niche that it's dying fast.
>>
>>2707016
I also read just now that apparently since 2021 the whole thing has been digitised and the stores send your purchase history directly to the tax agency, and you just need to show the items and you don't need the receipt anymore. I seriously hope this is true because I don't wanna get stuck paying fines over some figurines.
>you're supposed to leave it wrapped up until you leave the country
I think this was for consumables, right? So far I've only bought general goods tax free and it says you're allowed to open and use them as long as you take them out of the country.

For Hashima, do you mean the old coal mine off Nagasaki? I did that in 2017, it's a really cool but also kind of depressing piece of industrial history, and it's really a half-day trip at most. You take a tour boat out to the island, walk around for 45 minutes or so, then boat back to Nagasaki. It's not a large island.

Are there enough things to do in Sapporo to make a 1 week trip worth it?
>>
>>2707308
Absolutely. Just eating the local cuisine can be a worthy affair. Alternatively there are museums, temples, the old Sapporo factory. (Pay the extra couple of yen for the paid entry, it's more fun)
Take day trips out of Sapporo to the onsens and mountains.

secondly, thoughts on amanohashidate, day tripping from osaka? seems like i may as well just do a klook tour which will pick me straight up from osaka, otherwise id have to get to kyoto to get a bus/train with a decent time and then by that point it would have cost as much as just taking the tour (example: https://www.klook.com/activity/81597-amanohashidate-fromosaka-shinkibustour/)

day trip to sasebo and eat a sasebo burger while you're there. if you're lucky there'll be JSDF or amerimutt ships in the harbor that you can gawk at, as well - there was a surfaced submarine when i went.

i haven't spent a whoooooole lot of time in the city (or prefecture for that matter) but one thing i can fully recommend is ikeshima, it's way better than gunkanjima because you can actually get off at the ferry and walk around, there's even a small hotel. i went during the covid lockdowns and i was quite literally the single person on the island aside from the cats and the crazies that still live there, felt like being a survivor at the end of the world, just standing alone in the middle of an entire city that's in the process of being reclaimed by nature
>>

>>

If you want the good stuff in Akihabara you have to look away from the easily accessible places. That means higher than 3 floors, or in smaller streets, or basements. Not to say the big popular stores don't sell good things, but they are always going to have less interesting stock and at higher prices.

When I did the Hashima tour the boat did take us kind of close to some of the dockyards and even pointed out the one that built the battleship Musashi. The harbor and yards really are an impressive sight. I haven't done it myself, but you might get a good view of them from the Inasayama observation deck.

Outside of Nagasaki proper, Huis-ten Bosch was pretty cool. Basically a Dutch-themed amusement park.

Fellow aussie man do some basic googling fuck even reddit is good for most of those questions.

Get yourself a wise card for good exchange rate and card that'll work in glorious nippon.

Do some searching for a foreign currency exchange you want a bit of cash on you before you land for the trains for the IC card (like opal/myki)

Re sim cards check if your phone is esim compatible or if your on a better network just do roaming.

>>
>>2707574
Well, that's good to know.
>>
>>2707558
Yeah i'd check the rates for ANZ they'll hit you twice for doing the exchange. If you end up using your ANZ and withdraw cash pay in local currency. I.e not AUD you'll get a better conversion rate.

Wise also gives you two free withdrawls a month up to $350 each. And some times the there aren't card fees as well.
>>
>>2707558
Just google how to get the best AUD>JPY conversion rate and then check the banks' websites to verify it yourself.

After doing a bit of research it seems that Wise is probably my best choice.

What I do is find some places I want to see and take note of the general area they are in, then go to that area and just walk around, see the place I wanted and stumble across other interesting places while there. One thing I highly recommend is: if it's your first time going somewhere in a city, and you are not an unhealthy beast, walk to there from your hotel. (As long as it's not like 2 hours away). It's a ton of fun, you get to see the non-tourist parts of the city, you are guaranteed to find interesting things, and you get a really good general sense of scale and location for the whole place. Trains are great but I hate the feeling of disappearing underground in one tourist hotspot and then reappearing in another hotspot never seeing anything in between.
>>

I'm from South TX and the weather so far in JP has rivaled it. Yesterday I was drenched in sweat and even got sunburned.
I was going to go to Yokohama but they took down the Gundam, now i have no interest. Ive never been to Tokyo so going there instead. Yokohoma will be next trip
>>
>>2707777
I would recomend it, Yokohama is honestly imo far better. Then again I live here so its not comparable to tourism. The waterfront is gorgeous and its way less spreadout than Tokyo.

You got a bunch of little neighborhoods that are not too far like Chinatown which is def worth checking out.

Only do this if you want to hate your life and ruin your vision of Japan.
Seriously it's a stupid idea. Just visit Japan when able
>>
So just finished 4 days in Osaka, and I'm probably stating the obvious but the tourist traps like Shinsakai and Dotonbori are absolutely dreadful to spend any amount of time in. Get your pictures and get the fuck out of those types of areas. They're complete trash and the Yakuza/hooligans especially make it annoying having to deal with them on top of tourists
>>
>>2707590
That's why i suggested it anon.
>>
>>2707786
In what Asahi and John Wu film fueled fantasy do you "deal" with Yakuza in those tourist neighborhoods?
>>
>>2707791
I'm using it as a general term to refer to gangsters, it's why I included the /hooligans. I tend to stay out late and go down which ever alleys i see fit, and if you somehow have missed the obvious groups of gangsters/hooligans then I'd be surprised.
>>
>>2707793
those young punks that hang about late at night? you can look at them funny and they'll fall over. in my time here I have never been afraid of a single japanese person.

>>
>>2707793
What? I spent about 2 weeks in Osaka getting sloshed nightly at bars and stumbling back to my AirBnB which, according to my drinking buddies, is the ghetto and not once did I encounter anything remotely sketchy. If by hooligans you mean the kids in streetwear hanging out by the 7/11 in Amerimura then I am sorry to inform you that they are no gangsters, they are just college aged kids who like to dress like niggers.

There are 3 things I love about that area.
1- That one specific pizza shop with the cute staff and delicious nostalgia-tasting 'za
2- The fetishizing of an imagined America, embracing an inner city look minus the chance of getting shot by a pack of gentlemen who's last name is something like Jackson or Washington.

I've heard from multiple people that it's a great experience, and I'm at a time in my life where I want to make a career change/explore other options. What's so bad about it? Seems like a pretty easy job and you get like 3 months off a year to explore Japan, along with weekends. Plus Japan has a much lower cost of living than my country (Canada).

I leave for Japan in 36 hours but a lot of stuff still isn't planned. I'm staying in Fukuoka the first week, then have two days to go somewhere else before I return to Tokyo. Maybe somewhere in nature with freshwater to swim in. Any suggestions? I was considering Nagasaki or maybe Kikuchi Gorge in Kumamoto. The Tatsuro Yamashita concert in Matsuyama is also a consideration if I can find a resold ticket somewhere.

Second week I'm going to the 35th anniversary The Pillows concert and meeting my friend's dad who is former Yakuza and also some dates from With (Japanese dating app), finishing off with Rock in Japan in Ibaraki. After that I'm pretty free until TGS near the end of the month. A riverside ryokan with onsen might be nice but I'm open to suggestions anywhere in the Kanto region.

I would say it's not so hard to find one or get matches but it's hard to get to the next level with a girl in Japan. they're always busy with work and take their time before accepting going on a date.
depending on what you're looking for, Pairs and With are good options for long-term (paid) and you can try okcupid and tinder because why not

I got back to Tokyo today after conference in Toyama (sadly, couldn't explore town too much due to conference tight program but at least we had organised trip to Mt Tateyama so I guess it's okay) and since I will still have two whole days until flight, this evening I took a trip to Akahibara on foot to buy some models. Very crowded place but aside from shops, looks similar to the rest of Tokyo. Unless I'm missing something.

But could someone explain what's the deal with all those girls in maid or similar cosplays, giving some papers to people around? They try to advertise some themed cafes/bars? I assume that they target only Japanese as I was mostly ignored (I think). Or I'm simply too disgusting in their eyes.

Nagasaki anon here, universe really didn't want me to charter a boat, one was doing scheduled maintenance, another didn't have a phone/website that worked anymore. Wound up going to visitt. Unzen, but honestly it was only ok, I had been to other ones on previous trips that allowed me to get closer to areas of volcanic activity, additionally, because of how I got there, I didn't get to go to the museum or any of the associated eruption sites, but that was more of my fault than anything.
I was planning to hike down after taking the cable car back up, but the trail maintenance was super poor and they already had signs about parts of the trail being closed, so it was not worth the time to me.

It seems that there are no more days in Tokyo where the temperature exceeds 35 degrees,
but it still rises to nearly 35 degrees, and the minimum temperature still exceeds 25 degrees.
When walking outside, be sure to drink a sip of Pocari Sweat or Aquarius every hour,
even if you are not thirsty. If you don't, you will get heatstroke in no time, even at night.
In Osaka and Kyoto, days when the temperature exceeds 35 degrees are still continuing,
so you need to be even more careful.

Yeah. I’ve been to as many hard offs as I could possibly go to, and the ones out in the countryside are only marginally better than that of the ones in Shinjuku. Blame American flippers. They abused hard offs and kept emptying their stock of all the cool shit to flip on eBay. So hard off was like “you know what, we’ll cut out the middleman and match their prices.”

Not him but by museums in Uneo, you mean which ones? When I had like half a day after flight but before train department, I visited National Museum and nearby park but had no time for more. Tomorrow I will have whole day and rest of the group is arriving so hopefully I will have enough time. I really want to see more historical places, today separated from my boss to travel to Meijin Shrine (and could barely stand heat but I'm really glad I did travel there).
>>
By the way, I walked around Akihabara for 2 hours or something, on both main and side streets (side seemed more interesting) and I honestly feel sad about these girls giving out advertising papers and such. Many have "no photo" sign so I figured out its not something to be proud of. I took few papers out of pity, with thanks and all but I wonder if they actually loathe foreigners like me. I visited by late evening so I guess I missed the cosplayers many sites talk about as well.

At the other hand, when I was photographing buildings and such, I asked three of such "promo" girls if I can take a picture and they posed for me so I guess it's not all that bad.
>>
And one more thing I forgot about - is there any part of Tokyo with most old buildings left intact? Like some sort of "historical district" or something? When I visited Meijin Shrine, it felt like visiting Japan properly. Please don't tell me I should detour to Kyoto for that.

I've tried scheduling meetups ad hoc the night of and it never works. you have to do a little more preparation.

Not always, I mean they hustle for sure but its a job. Most of them are H.S seniors and university students from the countryside (inaka). There are some that are prostituting under the table but that an exception also the host club boys also do that too.
Most Japanese girls probably wouldn't be dating a foreigner anyway but not loathe them. Most of them cannot speak English.
Maidcafes honestly are kinda meh imo for weeb/coomer shit. You know they aren't actually into you obviously. I've had better interactions with the opposite sex on that front at the dance game arcades.

Make sure to rent a wifi provider that allows for 10 simultaneous connections, best to rent two so, sometimes, you can split in two groups if your interests don't fully align. Let's say that, on one day you're going to Ueno park, but some on the group want to see the zoo and gardens while others want to see the temples or the museums. Moving should not be a problem with all the trains and buses.
Make sure to book a Mario Kart cosplay race, tho, it's funny as fuck when you see a large group of gajins with different costumes speeding around
>>

I must admit I did something very wrong and want to tell someone.

I went at Akihabara by evening since I was told there are cosplayers here. Instead I only saw these girls with advertising papers around. Some were willing to pose after "asking" about it (if rising and pointing at camera while smiling slightly can count as "asking"), some had "no photo" signs near them so I didn't bother them. At another spot, I reflexively picked up and prepared camera when some guy approached me and told me, with slightly broken English, to no do it. I apologized and asked if it's generally not allowed. Since he noticed I don't speak Japanese, he picked up phone for translator, I picked mine and so we conversed a bit - he explained that he is these girls manager and they would feel nervous and uneasy, I thanked him for pointing this out and correcting me and said I didn't want to cause trouble or disrespect someone. He thanked for understanding and we ended this little talk with both bowing to each other few times - I apologized again, he thanked again and we parted ways.

Even with whole apologizing, I still feel like shit. I just wanted to tell someone.

I'm lightly planning my 2nd trip to japan, but there's one big question.
Starting in tokyo, do i want to go north, or south?

Last time i went as south as osaka. Going further south leads me to kobe, onomichi, samurai trail, shikoku island, and i can stop at more spots along the way i missed. (Is nagoya worth anything?)
If i instead head north, i can go to nikko, and hokkaido (hakodate specifically). But i have not researched much beyond those 2 locations. And i've been told previously on these threads to avoid Fukushima.

So what do other anons reccomend, north or south?

Sounds like a skill issue. I'm fluent in Japanese, have a Japanese gf and have been living here for 10 years (last 5 working at a Japanese company.) Problem is alot of people have trouble accepting the fact that they are now seen as Japanese and have to deal with all the rules/social etiquette that follows, and claim discrimination when in reality they are simply being treated with the gloves off, there is no more "foreigner pass".

How old are most of you? For some reason, I feel like I’m too old to do the shit I always wanted to do when I finally get there (go to arcades, shop for figurines, etc). I don’t know why

I'm 28 and every day on previous trips and on trips in the future will end and include going to the nearest arcade and shopping for figurines
The locals who do this are, for the most part, at least as old or even pushing 60

I understand figurines since it's mostly Otakus but going to arcades as a grown man especially alone is abit creepy, it's mostly high schoolers and younger there
>>
>>2709487
Not really. When I went to some arcades last year in Tokyo there was more than one occasion when a middle aged dude in a suit sat down alone for a quick round of a fighting game looking like he just finished work. It's definitely not a place where anyone cares what you look like or how old you are etc

would it be better to fly or bullet train from nagasaki to tokyo.
On the surface flying seems far better but when you consider travel to the airport, getting through security, waiting around for the flight, faffing around with baggage, arriving in haneda and having to travel back to the city it just feels like a lot more of a ballache than just jumping on the train for the sake of saving a few hours of travel time.

I had this happening way too much in Japanese dating apps. They unmatch way too easily if they find something they don't like about me or if I ask them out too quick. I've also had much better luck talking to them a week or 2 before asking them out if you're looking for relationship rather than hookup

I will go again in january but i get there on the 30th of december so will be around for New Years. Yes, i know everything is closed and that nobody really goes out and parties on new years eve. That being said, what have you guys done for new years eve in country. Probably will just go to random bar or Hub or some shit and wait it out, im sure theyd give a fuck at Hub. Also will probably be in Osaka then and with my mom. Also, somewhat related, ive been talking a bit online with a girl i met last time, how crazy would it be to ask her to stay with me for some amount of time (my mom wont be there the whole time but i could splurge for a second room because she will pay for the hotels while shes there). She lives like 2-3 hours outside tokyo and is constantly traveling there so id thought it would be nice for her to not have to make that trip as often. She already slept with me so it cant be THAT crazy, but probably still wont work, whatever im gonna do it anyway. She does want to see me again and i at least want to plan something in the next 4 months in hopes that she wont just make up an excuse at the last minute. She hasnt made up any excuses trying to get out out of something since ive been talking to her so.

yeah i know that sounds weird and shitty to my mom, shouldve excluded that but it is sort of important. Shes self employed and im a broke college student, im already paying for my flight and two weeks of hotels after she leaves. And she would love to see me with a girl, keeps teasing me about it too. "when i tell my friends that youre going for a THIRD time, they say "oh he must have a girl over there"" and i keep telling her no because i probably dont so i dont want to get her hopes up. She wants the best for me and knows asian girls make me happy.

if you can get your pet through without having to do a quarantine, and then find a place that allows pets. Don't know about hotels, if a hotel took pets its probably an expensive hotel, I don't see budget hotels allowing pets. You can try airbnb as well. now.. if you know someone who say.. works for the us government and you can get a visitors pass I think the lodge has arrangements for people with pets as a lot of military families move and bring their pets.
I miss my dog.

White suburbanites wanna be accepted everywhere.
Make your jokes, but as a Black American I already know what It's like to be other'd in a country I grew up in. Ain't nothin new if Japan did it, too, at least then I'd actually be an outsider and deserve the designation.
>>
>>2709814
You’re the wrong color
>>
>>2709783
I am Black.
I don't have an issue with Black people, I have an issue with Americans, flat out. Our culture is very selfish, loud, and brazen.

I think it dawned on me that I genuinely just do prefer Japanese culture when I thought about Boxing and the difference between the fan culture in America versus the fan culture and even systemic culture in Japan.

In Japan if a fighter so much as misses weight ONE time, they get a lengthy suspension, and the JBC will bar them from competing in that weight class ever again -- they have to move up.
And that's IF they show remorse -- you know, bow down, look really sad, shave their head in an attempt to make weight...

American Boxing culture?
You can miss weight by a country mile, test positive for PEDs, say all types of wild shit, blame the athletic commission and the sanctioning bodies for your cheating, and generally refuse to take responsibility for yourself and show literally no shame in how much of a bottom feeder scum you are...
And you'll at most get a suspension, but only because of the PEDs, not for any of the other stuff.

The fans? They'll love you.
Americans love audacious selfishness and acting like a jackass, It's not just the Blacks or the Hispanics, our entire culture is rooted in selfishness.
I've grown to realize I hate this country's entire culture. I know Japan isn't perfect, but let's look past skin color -- America is rotten even once you go colorblind.
>>
I didn’t read any of that btw :)
>>
I was just venting anyways.

No need to feel like sou didn't bother the girl with the "no photo" signs, and the girls who you did ask by your miming with the camera were certainly okay enough with it to let you.
It actually sounds like this guy is trying to be overprotective for some reason. I would keep asking the girls themselves, because the worst they can say is no and then you never see them again.
