>LOOK MOMMY I'M CRONENBERGING!

This movie confirms that women can't fucking direct. All they are capable of doing is ripping off aesthetic decisions from other directors. They do not have the judgment , wisdom, or discipline of male directors.

This might be the horror film of the decade, not only of what we've seen so far, but also likely for the years to come. I don't usually trust the super enthusiastic first impressions of festival films but they were right this time
This will be for the 2020s what The Lighthouse and Hereditary were for the 2010s, and what The Shining and The Thing were for the 80s

Yes it is a 30 minute episode of black mirror stretched out 5 times longer. It is just like student films that you play 'spot the influence'. Due to the zoomer obsession with horror + it makes them feel smart: "Ohhh I get this movie it is about... beauty standards1111" The perfect movie for today's idiots.

>>203771762
Women are now understanding how to exploit the marketplace and since they fuck their way to the top they are able to create crap like barbie movie, the substance, titane, and don't worry darling. These films are review-proof because they are made by women. Zoomers pretend to like them because they have low IQs.

>>203771805
In its imagination maybe but it does not have the depth of those films. It is one single theme repeated for 3 hours with no exploration

If Aronofsky's name was on this exact film, you'd be tripping over yourself to praise it. This reek of an anti-woman agenda.
>>
>>203772011

>>
>>203772011
Um, no, why the hell would Aronofsky be ripping off himself for shit he did specifically for Requiem for a Dream. Stuff that the whole point is they were hallucinating on drugs, but here even before the characters take any drugs, Dennis Quaid is acting like an acid trip psychopath in a wide angle lens from the very start. There is no build up it is just this one aesthetic from start to end. Aronofsky does not repeat himself either. Mommy is totally different than Black Swan and Requiem. They all bring something new. The Substance is a cheap knock-off of better films, of the sort women are only capable of making (see: Don't Worry Darling). It is bad, and if Aronofsky made it it would damage his reputation and his ability to make new films. If Brandon Cronenberg made it they would tear him to pieces for making a lesser version of his father's films. The film only gets away with it because a woman made it. Women can't fucking direct, or even think.

Still, the decline is serious. Think that in the 60s festivals were programming movies such as Rocco e i suoi fratelli, Plein soleil, etc., which were incredibly ambitious and high quality, while nowadays stuff such as The Substance gets revered and programmed into the major film festivals around the world. I think it has to do with the fall of the west unironically, the degradation of aesthetics and ethical values due to commodification of art and disinterest in producing good movies by major studios.

Nobody talks like Tarantino characters except for Tarantino. His dialogue writong is insufferable, i don't understand how it was ever praise, it all sounds like a high school kid trying to be cool and reference stuff to show others he knows them. Posting this hack of a collage artist on /film/ should be a bannable offense.
>>
>>203774950
I agree that the average of filmmaking quality was better in the past, even more the average of who has their films on the big festivals. But while I recognize a decline, it's not the end of the world. There's always new interesting films and voices to watch. BTW, I largely agree on the decline of the West's morals and its consequences for the arts. But not as the only factor for a fall in quality from the mid-20th century.
As a general outlook on life, I choose to see the bright side of things, a big difference between me and the usual /film/ posters.

Looks like generic body horror that'll be forgotten before the year is over. Nothing to get mad over.

I’d say Tsai is one of the best examples for the idea that a film can really stay with you for quite awhile after viewing, and as you think about it the appreciation grows even without watching it again. I’m even thinking more about GDI too. No other filmmaker has had this kind of affect on me other than Godard and Tarkovsky.

>>
>>203776380
>So what's so horrible about The Substance anyway?
Horrible everything. Horrible acting (Demi can't act, Qualley can't act). Horrible makeup work (the ear scene looks like straight up homemade prosthetics). Horrible pacing (last act extends for like an hour for absolutely no reason, completely deters the tempo of the film). Horrible photography (colors are very unsaturated and cheap looking, even the scenes from the Pump It Up show that are supposed to pop under bright lighting look more like bad TV infomercials). Horrible themes (burnt out "le body dismorphia" / drug addiction shit that is everywhere these days). Etcetera etcetera. Strong contender for worst film of the year.

Wrong. The Substance fulfills what directors like Refn, Lanthimos, Von Trier, Titane, and all the Cronenberg children have been failing to achieve. Rewatched last night, still holds up and the final scene is absolute kino, but doesn't come near what Argento would do later. Bird is the best of the trilogy i guess. continuing my journey through the FOTWs. I was only able to watch two today, but here are my thoughts
>In the Heat of the Sun
I've seen this get some comparison to A Brighter Summer Day, and I can see some similarities; however, I don't think this holds a candle to the masterpiece that is A Brighter Summer Day. don't get me wrong, I still very much enjoyed this film, it was just missing something to make it truly special. I'm a sucker for these types of films that tell important moments in a country's history through the backdrop of a coming of age film, but I feel this almost didn't go far enough, by limiting the story to just one summer. I also really liked the way the film played with nostalgia/memory and wish it would have dived into this further, though I understand not wanting to make the story an incoherent mess for the masses, even if it would have made for a better overall film. very enjoyable little coming of age film, with some interesting ideas, and a peak into what it was like growing up in Maoist China. 8/10
>The Serpent's Egg
I just finished this, and I'm still not sure what to think of it. I think I really enjoyed it, but I can't exactly put into words why. The Weimar backdrop is always interesting to me, and I saw a lot of similarities between this and other films I've seen set during that period (The Joyless Street, The Blue Angel, Cabaret, etc.). the general degeneracy, the feeling of the public getting fed up with this life, the paranoia, it's all present here. I see some reviews talking about how this is Bergman apologizing for his stance siding with the Nazi party during these years, and I can see it, though I'm not sure I agree. I still need to do some more thinking on this. rating pending/10 (though probably at least a 7)
I'll get to The Crucified Lovers and My Dinner With Andre sometime in the future

Good post bro. In the Heat of the Sun has very nostalgic aesthetics for people that grew up in developing countries I think, -like me-, but as I've said sometimes in here, it's very derivative of Once Upon a Time in America and a little commercial, just as you said.
I enjoy the degenerate setting of Weimar films, do you guys have recs for degenerate and chaotic films about that era?
>>
>>203784140
There are probably many more memeable films that will get into canons like crazy. I think Blade Runner 2049 might get considered better than OG Blade Runner, for example. The memes already have made it more relevant than its predecessor.
>>
>>203784707
the internet always overestimates memes. doesnt mean anything
>>
>>203784778
I unironically think the memes and "quotables" are what have made Tarantino a household name, that and the violence
>>
>>203784677
I saw your (and possibly other anons) posts comparing In the Heat of the Sun to Once Upon a Time in America, but I still haven't watched that one. I'll agree that it's more commercial than a lot of the films I normally discuss here, and it's definitely got that Chinese propaganda slant that a film from there needs in order to be funded/released. but at the same time there is a universal nostalgia there, even for someone like me who grew up in an arguably first world country, at a time where my childhood didn't resemble the film at all, except in terms of feeling
as for the Weimar films, I really haven't seen much outside of the few I mentioned. maybe another anon can provide some more recs, though I think it's an era a lot of filmmakers want to avoid because of the stigma. if they make it look too bad, they will be siding with the Nazis, but if they make it look good, they will be revising history
>>
>>203784969
I just like chaotic and gritty atmospheres in films.

About the childhood thing from In the Heat of the Sun, my childhood was very similar to that film, only that my friends were bikers and we used to explore my town and nearby towns and cities freely. Very nostalgic stuff, we also used to go to the zoo and shit, making up with girls at school... So nice to be a kid in a war free country, in a time when you could feel safe in the world.
