>>203772011Um, no, why the hell would Aronofsky be ripping off himself for shit he did specifically for Requiem for a Dream. Stuff that the whole point is they were hallucinating on drugs, but here even before the characters take any drugs, Dennis Quaid is acting like an acid trip psychopath in a wide angle lens from the very start. There is no build up it is just this one aesthetic from start to end. Aronofsky does not repeat himself either. Mommy is totally different than Black Swan and Requiem. They all bring something new. The Substance is a cheap knock-off of better films, of the sort women are only capable of making (see: Don't Worry Darling). It is bad, and if Aronofsky made it it would damage his reputation and his ability to make new films. If Brandon Cronenberg made it they would tear him to pieces for making a lesser version of his father's films. The film only gets away with it because a woman made it. Women can't fucking direct, or even think.

Think that in the 60s festivals were programming movies such as Rocco e i suoi fratelli, Plein soleil, etc., which were incredibly ambitious and high quality, while nowadays stuff such as The Substance gets revered and programmed into the major film festivals around the world. I think it has to do with the fall of the west unironically, the degradation of aesthetics and ethical values due to commodification of art and disinterest in producing good movies by major studios.

>>203776364Fuck, forgot about What Time too. I’d say Tsai is one of the best examples for the idea that a film can really stay with you for quite awhile after viewing, and as you think about it the appreciation grows even without watching it again. I’m even thinking more about GDI too. No other filmmaker has had this kind of affect on me other than Godard and Tarkovsky.
>>203776380I think it's just the traditional war between shills and haters over the current film of the week/month. I'm glad this puts Longlegs out of the hit parade.
>>203776380>So what's so horrible about The Substance anyway?Horrible everything. Horrible acting (Demi can't act, Qualley can't act). Horrible makeup work (the ear scene looks like straight up homemade prosthetics). Horrible pacing (last act extends for like an hour for absolutely no reason, completely deters the tempo of the film). Horrible photography (colors are very unsaturated and cheap looking, even the scenes from the Pump It Up show that are supposed to pop under bright lighting look more like bad TV infomercials). Horrible themes (burnt out "le body dismorphia" / drug addiction shit that is everywhere these days). Etcetera etcetera. Strong contender for worst film of the year.

>>203780240Keep the delusion of jannies caring and reporting threats to a humor thread.>>203780291Not only you aren't point and laughing right now, but you won't that in any day you're here. You'll just continue to seethe and try to decide what people can or not talk about. You're having great success so far.
>>203780342/film/ encompasses everything
>>203780351I think you're trolling but it is genuinely a /film/ /horror/ crossover. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX9Sy7eANbsIf Zulawski, Polanski, and Cronenberg are /film/ so is The Substance.

Funny, I didn't see all this fuzz while the disgusting nigga threads were up. Or the other retarded larps that schizo does. Endless gibberish shitposting completely off-topic? Fine weather. People talking about mainstream releases? AHHH, /film/ is being killed, save me janny man
>>203780479AHHHHHH
>>203780434That trailer really does not illustrate just how masterful and artistic the film really is.
>>203780453>>203780497Damn, just saw you named the exact same ones i did, nice.
>>203780503Niggaposter got cooked. This new guy (probably him desu) is also getting cooked. All according to nature's desire
>>203780479That kid looks older than me.
>>203780503That's because it's the same people niggaposting and complaining.
>>203780369>Not only you aren't >but you won't thatSo you’re actually retarded. Got it.
>>203780549He didn't get cooked, he posted a couple of threads ago and said he wasn't even banned. That thread just got deleted. I think he got bored of the gimmick.
Gonna watch pic related tonight. Thoughts?
>>203780624Consecutive bans reformed him, I think. Have you thought that the guy that said he was the OG niggaposter was just larping lmao. The reality is, /film/ has reduced niggaposting to the bare minimun while 2 weeks ago or so every thread was just endless spamming of the same lame shit so, what do you know, maybe reporting actually works
>>203780530Yeah but I mean those are the essentials
>>203780660Why would you want thoughts before watching something? That colors your expectations. Some retard say it's shit or a great film and then you have to deal with the hype.

>>203780688Maybe. But my ratio of reporting shitposting of all kinds here and elsewhere and getting action taken has been like 1 to 500. Jannies don't care about quality, just culture war and protecting their side.

>>203780688>maybe reporting actually worksJannies don't really go after generals because they are autist containment threads. No time to discern all the in jokes and politics and which one is the actual troll. Remember, there are 100s of active generals at a time.

>>203780861But that kind shit is childish. All these posters who come asking for opinions before watching something or the classic "is this worth watching guyz?" sound like children asking online daddy for confirmations.
Criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, friend, acquaintance or stranger.
>>203780971Yea but why should they have any special insight. They are often layman with no knowledge of film history.
>>203780688It ended merely because I got tired of it. Zero bans for it. On to new gimmicks.

>>203781065The difficult part about making films is that the layman's opinion matters more than the professional critics. They are ultimately the audience who will decide the fate about your film.
>>203773539i found it very sophisticated compared to normal horrors but i found that kind of a superficial distraction from something that wasnt all that appealing to me underneath. i kept finding myself unfavourably comparing it to rosemary's baby because there were several parts that seem to explicitly evoke it and possibly some other classic horrors

continuing my journey through the FOTWs. I was only able to watch two today, but here are my thoughts>In the Heat of the SunI've seen this get some comparison to A Brighter Summer Day, and I can see some similarities; however, I don't think this holds a candle to the masterpiece that is A Brighter Summer Day. don't get me wrong, I still very much enjoyed this film, it was just missing something to make it truly special. I'm a sucker for these types of films that tell important moments in a country's history through the backdrop of a coming of age film, but I feel this almost didn't go far enough, by limiting the story to just one summer. I also really liked the way the film played with nostalgia/memory and wish it would have dived into this further, though I understand not wanting to make the story an incoherent mess for the masses, even if it would have made for a better overall film. very enjoyable little coming of age film, with some interesting ideas, and a peak into what it was like growing up in Maoist China. 8/10>The Serpent's EggI just finished this, and I'm still not sure what to think of it. I think I really enjoyed it, but I can't exactly put into words why. The Weimar backdrop is always interesting to me, and I saw a lot of similarities between this and other films I've seen set during that period (The Joyless Street, The Blue Angel, Cabaret, etc.). the general degeneracy, the feeling of the public getting fed up with this life, the paranoia, it's all present here. I see some reviews talking about how this is Bergman apologizing for his stance siding with the Nazi party during these years, and I can see it, though I'm not sure I agree. I still need to do some more thinking on this. rating pending/10 (though probably at least a 7)I'll get to The Crucified Lovers and My Dinner With Andre sometime in the future
Future kino watchers who are still children now will be memed into thinking that Jeanne Dielman is one of the absolute greatest films of all time
>>203784140Just how we were memed into thinking that The Rules of the Game is one of the absolute greatest films of all time.
>>203784393Accurate.
>>203784140>memed
>>203784393Grand Illusion is Renoir's best and I'm tired of pretending otherwise
>>203784467
>>203784489Based.
>>203784137Good post bro. In the Heat of the Sun has very nostalgic aesthetics for people that grew up in developing countries I think, -like me-, but as I've said sometimes in here, it's very derivative of Once Upon a Time in America and a little commercial, just as you said.I enjoy the degenerate setting of Weimar films, do you guys have recs for degenerate and chaotic films about that era?
>>203784140There are probably many more memeable films that will get into canons like crazy. I think Blade Runner 2049 might get considered better than OG Blade Runner, for example. The memes already have made it more relevant than its predecessor.
>>203784707the internet always overestimates memes. doesnt mean anything
>>203784778I unironically think the memes and "quotables" are what have made Tarantino a household name, that and the violence
>>203784677I saw your (and possibly other anons) posts comparing In the Heat of the Sun to Once Upon a Time in America, but I still haven't watched that one. I'll agree that it's more commercial than a lot of the films I normally discuss here, and it's definitely got that Chinese propaganda slant that a film from there needs in order to be funded/released. but at the same time there is a universal nostalgia there, even for someone like me who grew up in an arguably first world country, at a time where my childhood didn't resemble the film at all, except in terms of feelingas for the Weimar films, I really haven't seen much outside of the few I mentioned. maybe another anon can provide some more recs, though I think it's an era a lot of filmmakers want to avoid because of the stigma. if they make it look too bad, they will be siding with the Nazis, but if they make it look good, they will be revising history
>>203784969I just like chaotic and gritty atmospheres in films.About the childhood thing from In the Heat of the Sun, my childhood was very similar to that film, only that my friends were bikers and we used to explore my town and nearby towns and cities freely. Very nostalgic stuff, we also used to go to the zoo and shit, making up with girls at school... So nice to be a kid in a war free country, in a time when you could feel safe in the world.
