i really hate this film
it's nearly unwatchable and only bill murray's excellent performance salvages it
johansson's character is utterly contemptible: vapid, self absorbed, haugty, and entitled
the idea that she, as a 17 year old wastrel can really identify with murray's alienation is utterly laughable
if the goal was the accurately capture a delusional and insufferable cunt then sofia coppola does so fantastically however, while there is no shortage of such women and men to be found on college campuses and in hostels, such persons are not profoundly engaging nor are they likeable protagonists to anyone who is not similarly vapid
yet with her barely legal charm johansson is lauded for her pretty face and nubile body although not in such words
imagine, for a moment, that the role was instead played by a man of similar age or even a frumpy acne faced girl and it is instantly revealed how this is the case
were she at least an older woman then we could believe she could be jaded and disillusioned even if this would essentially be a repeat of the murray character but instead this girl with a loving accomplished and quite devoted boyfriend and the resources to do whatever frivolous indulgence she pleases is listless and pensive
because she is really a self insert for the female audience: a beautiful young girl who has it all and the world at her feet yet is still so wistful and full of feigned complexity
quite in contrast to murray's character who is absolutely perfect but is also beyond the scope of the character limit
>>
>>204068868
agreed. it's the movie version of the show "girls". it's probably her venting about marrying too young or something. Does the character even change by the end of the film? I hated how she was towards the female film star character, but you could say it was a truthful display of female jealousy.
>>
>>204068298
Very true. There's an incredible loneliness being somewhere surrounded by others but with no ability to connect with them. On the plus side, I ended up fucking a hot 22 year old who was way out of my league simply because we were in the same little village in Bolivia at the same time where nearly no one else spoke English (and the majority didn't even speak Spanish).
>>
>>204067299
incels cant understand this film, sorry anon
>>
>>204068934
i haven't seen girls nor do i know much about coppola's personal life but that hypothesis sounds plausible
however in the film johnansson is there voluntarily and seemingly for no reason other than want of anything better to do because she herself is an empty shell
her boyfriend repeatedly tries to connect with her and involve her which she spurns because she is plainly just a cunt and considers herself too good to be around his work and the character you reference which, thinking about it, is probably copolla attacking female actors
how ironic that johansson's character, which is supposed to contrast that foil, manages to be even more vacuous: she simply floats through the world voyeuristically snidely refusing to make any commitment or attachment while she pretends to somehow be above everything
the scene where she visits a temple disgusted me: there she stands as an invader and an alien perversely ogling ceremony and people whose lives have meaning and place as though they are zoo animals for not being so enlightened and detached as she is

this again is not so with murray's character who very much does have attachments in the form of his family and work which pain him
his work tears him away from his family life, which we are lead to believe is far from steady and which demonstrably he cares about as he makes numerous phone calls to a wife who seems less invested than he is, and this sunders him
on the one hand he does still yearn for youthful adventure and carefree fun, which is the only reason we can believe he has any connection to johansson at all despite her hitherto expressing no such energies, but his fame and family hamstring and entrap him which on the other he does care about and need

the worst scene in the entire film is when murray has sex
it served no purpose other than to elevate johansson's character and to somehow reinforce the idea that their bond is cerebral not physical yet at the cost of murray's integrity and our sympathy
>>
>>204067299
It's a pretty original film. Basically two soul mates meeting at the wrong age and time spending a short moment together, reflecting on the moment and moving on with life. That's why basically nothing of actual plot takes place during the film, it's purely character driven.

I didn't feel this at the time I watched the film but actually going to Japan and being unable to talk to anyone was awful. It was an alienation I couldn't have imagined.
>>
>>204069577
well said. apparently the movie is also based on a tryst coppola had with harrison ford when she was young. also vincent gallo had that quote "Sofia Coppola likes any guy who has what she wants. If she wants to be a photographer she'll fuck a photographer. If she wants to be a filmmaker, she'll fuck a filmmaker."
>>
>>204068868
I like the flick but yes if it was about an older woman and younger man it’d be 10x better
>>
>>204069577
>the scene where she visits a temple disgusted me: there she stands as an invader and an alien perversely ogling ceremony and people whose lives have meaning and place as though they are zoo animals for not being so enlightened and detached as she is

This is too harsh. The feeling she is describing isn't an extension of her floating through life feeling detached. There's an expectation that when you visit something culturally meaningful or significant, that you feel something. Travel is often you getting stressed about organizing everything then you get to this place that's apparently so important yet you can't connect with it. So you feel guilt, or a sadness at being unable to feel things that are supposed to be significant

>an invader

Reading this again I can't understand why you use this phrasing. Tourists are "invading" Japan?
>>

just look at Bill Murray reacting to those wacky japanese people haha
>>
>>204070698
Japanese people are quirky, though. This zoomer angle that we're supposed to hate lost in translation because of racism is tepid because they really are a very different culture and ignoring that would be more strange than drawing attention to it. And it's not like he's mocking them - at no stage during the film does it seem like Japanese people are some sort of joke. It is just that there is a cultural difference.

>can really identify with murray's alienation is utterly laughable
She can't and it's not even suggested that she can.
They find comfort in each other, but there's no suggestion that their experiences beyond the rough silhouette of feeling alone and dissatisfied are in any way the same.
She makes the typical mistake of a young person in letting herself feel closer to him than is justifiable and while he briefly enjoys being around someone young and passionate, he ultimately has to remind her of reality and their duties to which he is resigned, regardless of whether it's sufficiently satisfying.

>johansson's character is utterly contemptible: vapid, self absorbed, haugty, and entitled
This is a meaningless criticism. Characters who are bad people can still be at the center of interesting and enjoyable stories. Like American Psycho.
Also try watching this with a woman and you'll hear them complain endlessly about how Murray is an actual piece of shit.
>>
>>204070820
You paid for a flight and a hotel already. Might as well get absolutely shitfaced and try to get laid while terrorizing the locals. If anybody asks: just tell them you're English.
>>
>>204069717
It has a realistic "escape from stifling reality and conventions" subtext that occurs silently but often irl. Some ppl seethe bc they want life to be linear, predictable and beholden to social norms but it's sometimes more complex than that
>>
>>204069577
>which demonstrably he cares about as he makes numerous phone calls to a wife
People can do these things without actually caring. Haven't you ever heard the expression "going through the motions"?
Compare what this anon said >>204069873 about Johansson's character doing something that's meant to be meaningful and finding herself disconnected from it with Murray's character and how he fails to derive contentment from his family or career. Yes he makes phone calls and appears for commercials and does all the things on paper, but his heart isn't in it.

>watching this with a woman and you'll hear them complain endlessly about how Murray is an actual piece of shit
because it's fine if they do things but not if they have things done to them. those women will also say it's fine that a married women is lying in bed with another man because they didn't get physical (only the tip), and that emotional cheating isn't a thing (when they do it)
>>
>>204069873
i'm too busy to give a full response now but she would be just as much of an invader in a church; the language is simply more pointed because she's in japan and this is also true of the theme of alienation
murray and johansson are alienated everywhere their being in japan simply highlights it: murray because of his fame and johansson because she is a beautiful young girl who can have anything she wants
>>204070842
you're wrong and the entire point of the scene where murray fucks the singer is to make that apparent
we are supposed to believe that johansson and murray connect in a world where they are both endlessly alienated even if just because of that alienation
they have youthful exuberant bonding which isn't tainted or polluted by transactions, favours, or sex
the scene in the bar when some guys arw fawning over murray and johansson brushes off his fame is another example of this: she is unimpressed by what he is and instead sees who he is and he sees her in turn
the problem is who she is is nobody even if murray is a piece of shit, which i don't think he is
>Characters who are bad people can still be at the center of interesting and enjoyable stories
yes, absolutely
however characters who are a black hole of personality and make the twilight protagonist blush with how designed to project onto they are do not
johansson's defining traits are that she is pensive and listless: she has no goals, no desires, no responsibilities, and not even any attachments given how indifferent to her boyfriend she is
>>
>>204071005
probably projection. does she even mention this in the film? she would've cheated on him just because he was concerned about how much she smoked.
>>
>>204067299
the movie is just coppola venting about her failure as a wife
>>
>>204070964
I didn't get this from the film. He seemed to want to try with his work but found it alien and counter intuitive. His work also just treated him like a tool for his fame rather than his ability. His wife on the phone seemed a lot more hostile and eager to leave than he did. He even talks about when he comes back and she just sounds like she doesn't want him. If it was meant to seem like he didn't care then why was he the one reaching out to a body recoilling?
>>
>>204069577
>repeatedly tries to connect with her
i don't remember that at all. there are really people on here who will side with a male character just for being in conflict with a female.
>>
>>204071028
last bit makes me think of revolutionary road. perfect life, kids, still not happy. at least the female on that wanted to give a go at acting, albeit unsuccessfully. I guess since charlotte was a philosophy major it figures.
>>
>>204071103
He invited her to come to Japan with him for work ffs. He invites her to the shoot and she says no. He invites her to meet his coworkers (the bimbo girl) and she says no to later agree when he asks again. She wont even fucking share a bed with him and he's the entire reason she's there. Let me guess, that's a problematic abusive power dynamic that she consentually went on a working holiday with her bf while being unemployed.
>>
Bill Murray is such an annoying fucking person
>>
>>204071251
Groundhog Day and this are good films, though. I don't see any other actor that could have done those roles.
>>
>>204071028
They connect by virtue of them both feeling alienated but the nature of their respective experiences of alienation isn't the same at all. I never got the impression that Johansson can deeply understand Murray's life, for the most part she seems like a kid that's overestimated her own emotional awareness.
>she is unimpressed by what he is and instead sees who he is
She doesn't care about the fame because he can offer her companionship which is her lifeline in a difficult situation. I wouldn't conflate that with being able to really see him. Him sleeping with the singer and rejecting her at the end clearly represent a disconnection between what she wants him to be and who he really is. Even the sleepover scene to some extent, which is obviously suggestive and she would surely know that and be expecting a particular outcome that he denies her.
>johansson's defining traits are that she is pensive and listless: she has no goals, no desires, no responsibilities
What's wrong with that in the context of a story? There are many people like that and I'd say most posters around here have had periods of life which are similar. Though maybe not as fortunate as being able to spend that time in Japan rent free.

You're wrong. She just got into a doomed marriage and has no one to confide in besides a stranger who she feels emotionally connected to. If you've ever experienced this you'd understand the movie perfectly. Bill's character is more contemptible if anything, he actually cheats on his wife and spergs out on the phone with her over random shit like carpet colours and he is supposed to be the wise and mature one.

>bill murray's excellent performance salvages it
Its the opposite, the film's only flaw is Bill Murray insisting on shoehorning his retarded brand of improvised comedy into so many scenes.
