>>
So if he had actually killed Adam would he have been let go?
Or was killing Adam just to let his wife and daughter go and his trial was actually to cut his foot off?
Also, why the fuck didn't he just kill Adam? His wife and child were on the line and that faggot sucked.

Horror is one genre where I will almost always take TERRIBLE practical effects over perfect CGI. When it comes to Horror, shitty hilarious practical effects really are a part of what makes 70s/80s horror films absolutely mog literally everything modern. It's so satisfying to watch basically just bad cut to a balloon with a smiley face drawn on it explode to represent a head or whatever. Even with "good" practical effects, what makes them often good is the fact they still let you see the puppetry and physical work that goes into them like with The Thing or Alien.

horror is a very visual and physical genre. it's mainly about small close up spectacles rather than large ones as well.
one problem with cgi is there's no threat to it. it feels weightless and empty.
I also think practical effects are just nice from an art perspective. perfect replication of reality isn't necessarily the goal, and also when you produce the fantastic by using the real you get something stimulating to think about.

(My Final Spooktober Review!)
1/2
Fright Night (1985) – As the perfect Halloween movie, it can’t help being Excellent! Charlie Brewster, a kid who’s only kind of dorky -- non-dorky enough to *almost* get laid as the movie opens -- interrupts his own attempts at teen coitus to watch the new neighbors move in . . . at night and carrying a COFFIN . . . and with the murders in the news, and the screams, and the high-priced hookers going in that house (and coming *out* in garbage bags), Charlie knows Jerry Dandrige for a dirty VAMPIRE, and his roommate Billy as none other than his daywalking THRALL. Oily Chris Sarandon is spot-on as Jerry the vamp, the ultimate bloodsucking *yuppie* who just wants to enjoy the rich fruits of his lifestyle in peace. Just imagine yourself in his shoes: You’ve got a new house in a good ‘burb to put all your antiques in, the hookers come right to *you*, nobody suspects you of anything . . . and when this annoying kid starts trying to put the clamps on you, your first instinct is to scare him into silence. Why would you slaughter him outright, after all, and draw needless attention to yourself?

But Charlie Brewster can’t let it alone, and he soon drags in his semi-friend Evil Ed, who I didn’t remember being such a little *asshole* in my previous viewings -- he’s a terrific autistic character who can’t help being loud, shrill, and provocative . . . and perhaps a little *naturally* drawn to evil.

Then there’s Roddy Mcdowall as horror host Peter Vincent, who through greed for a teenage girl’s savings account *unwittingly* becomes a real vampire hunter; he’s a twitchy, emotional, cringing kind of guy who can yet summon the iron to do what he must. Charlie is a bland and believing good-boy-at-heart, and his girlfriend is the susceptible, doe-eyed ingenue -- these two creating a solid nucleus for the handful of very *interesting* weirdos who orbit them.

The vampire lore in this is traditional and well-followed, without any sudden leaps of idiocy. Jerry is a little laid-back perhaps (any vamp is going to be arrogant), unsuspecting that anything BAD could really happen to him, but he also doesn’t do anything really stupid that could imperil him, lashing out only when he’s pushed and pushed again. He has the vampire ability to *mesmerize* certain susceptible individuals without even them biting them, which is used twice to tense effect. Excellent practical effects add the icing on the cake -- particularly the extravagant death of a certain minor vampire -- with Jerry’s disgusting bat monster transformation the little cherry on top!

So long, Spooktober! I watched and REVIEWED 53 movies last month -- most of them being pretty good in the final estimation! I learned about Paul Naschy, I acquainted myself with the PROLIFIC Canadian actor Steven McHattie (if you make something in Canada, he's gonna be in it), and I got cozy with Universal Dracula! I watched at least a couple films from every decade starting in the '30s. In reviewing them all, I typed over 17,000 words of text. Here's the breakdown:

>Excellent!
V/H/S Halloween (2025)
Embodiment of Evil (2008)

Without Name (2016)
Dracula's Daughter (1936)
Demonic (2015)
Paganini Horror (1989)

Son of Frankenstein (the third one) is the best-written of the Universals, even though the Caligari-style German Impressionist sets are a love it or hate it (I loved 'em.) I think the plotting, broken-necked Igor is Bela Lugosi's BEST ROLE EVER. House of Frankenstein, one of those big ensemble Universals with multiple monsters, is goofy as hell, but just as fun, with a really great plot for Dracula, who leaves the film too soon.

And yes, Frankenhooker gets more AWESOME every time I watch it!

Demons
Dagon
The Beautiful Prisoner
Humanist Vampire
Mephisto Waltz
Black Sunday
Carnival of Souls
Blood and Black Lace
Lowlifes
Symptoms
Dead Calm

Blow-Up

Heretic
Seven Women for Satan
Demon Knight
Mothman Prophecies
Texas Chainsaw 2

Piranha 3D
Red Room 2

Weapons, Bring her Back, Strange Harvest, Together, Dangerous Animals (such a waste of potential), Vicious, 28 Years. All of these overhyped current year releases were disappointingly mediocre to garbage. Not worth anyone's time here. Just depressing, this year.

They should make a Scream series of an alternate timeline where Sydney died and the Ghostface killer got away as one of the greatest serial killers to ever exist and not get caught. Take place in modern day woodsboro where old men Billy and Stu are depressed and bored with life and one of them convinces the other to have the Ghostface killer return for the 30th anniversary of the killings. It would be a horror comedy show, like the Chucky show. Original actors for Billy and Stu of course. And Dewey and Gail

October rundown

>Phantasm
Did not know what to expect. Enjoyed it a lot
>From Beyond
It's no 'Re-Animator,' but very fun and well-made. Starring my waifu
>Q: The Winged Serpent
Started off feeling like this was gonna stink but was completely won over by the end. The male lead is fantastic.
>Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931)
Pre-code kino. Considers the eternal dilemma of deciding whether to settle down with a nice girl vs. going buck wild with a total whore. Pretty sophisticated filmmaking, especially being that it's nearly 100 years old
>Viy
The horror/fx sequences were a joy. The narrative meat in between, while not bad, did drag some. Its infectious spirit reminded me of 'Evil Dead II.'
>Altered States
A movie about a guy whose life is way too wrapped up in his work, who comes to realize that his wife and family are more important. Starts out promising but ends up a slog. The science fiction elements are bs, and the dialogue is Fucking Ponderous.
>The Hitcher
Reminded me a lot of 'Terminator 2,' both in its look and with all the being chased around, especially once the big rig showed up. First scene is extremely strong. Devolves into dream logic. Doesn't seem to have a point. It's ok
>King Kong (1933)
King Kong
>The Exorcist III
The main actor is an old, overweight man, which is cool. But this is called 'The Exorcist III' and the protagonist is not even an exorcist, he's some kind of police guy. Had some good moments but was tedious overall. I was much more disturbed to learn that this was one of Jeffrey Dahmer's favorite movies (this and 'Return of the Jedi'), and that he showed it to his victims, and that he watched it before killing people to get hyped up, and that he wore yellow contact lenses while trolling for victims as a way of cosplaying The Gemini Killer (and Emperor Palpatine).
>Frankenhooker
Surprisingly wholesome. Loved it

I feel like the Suspiria dub is not high quality either way because both tracks sound like the actors are in a comfy soundproof room at 9AM sleepily recording the lines. But for me that just adds to the dreamy effect of the movie (and makes me relaxed and sleepy).
>>215631056
I only watched Tenebrae once in Italian, haven't seen Integral Hard in Italian, I will probably only watch Suspiria once in Italian. It was a fun diversion but I can't imagine not watching these movies without Tony Franciosa / Jessica Harper's voices.
I went to a 'gentothon at my local theatre one year and for some reason they played Tenebrae in English, but Opera, Inferno and Bird with the Crystal Plumage in Italian. I guess the programmer was a pretentious subfag. All those movies have their leads doing their own voices and all the Italian actors are speaking English on set anyway.

I've noticed that there are a lot of horror sequels and remakes that are pretty good or at the very least serviceable but have had their scores blown to shit from either sheer stubbornness or expectations being too high. People taking horror too seriously and then being mad that a sequel comes along that isn't as good and that's excuse enough to write it off as garbage when it really isn't.

Seconding this, what a great movie. Make sure it's subtitled and doesn't have a shitty English dub though

But I did get a tingle when I saw Annie changing her shirt in Halloween after she gets butter on it (in the novel Michael has a boner while watching that lol) and in Suspiria when Suzy leaves the airport and you can see her ankles.

Some little girlies are just hot like that. I think most 4chan-users are way past guilt about it. Also see some early Elle Fanning films for more of such . . . PHENOMENA.

It's a pity, because there's so much in that film that could have been turned into something great, the setting, the initial set-up, the gorgeous girl, the clock tower, the crazy sheriff . . . Coppola was just too high on his own supply to tell an honest, homely small town tale about ghosts/vampires, and had to go for the "sophisticated" meta route, which ruined it in the end. I always say that metaphor should be handed lightly, when it all. Most people should just let it come out naturally and subconsciously, when it CHOOSES to.

I'm saying that none of the stuff that happens in the movie "happens," and that's always pure SHIT no matter who tries to peddle it. The story is a heavy handed metaphor for grief/pain of creation, and it goes through torturous lengths to shove this in your face at the end.

(I know I said Fright Night was my last review, but I just *had* to do Fright Night 2 as a Spooktober coda because I liked the first movie so much. Here ya go, the FINAL FINAL review.)

1/2

Fright Night 2 (1988) -- A middling Worth a Watch. It’s a solid, fun time if you’re in the mood great monster practicals and some *smoldering* vampire atmosphere in a 1980s setting, but it stops itself from becoming great -- and in SO many ways, which all relate to the writing being too SLOPPY for any level of immersion. First is the Flanderization of its two recurring characters, Peter Vincent and Charley Brewster. Charley goes from being an unflinching *believer* in the evidence of his own senses and experience . . . to being tricked by a portly psychiatrist into thinking what he and Peter experienced in first film was just a “group hallucination.” No-one is that stupid . . . especially not a person with the fortitude to confront a vampire! And Peter Vincent goes from being an intelligent, sensitive man who must *battle* his own cowardice to save the day into a COMPLETE IDIOT who charges a vampiress while she’s filming a TV show, with about a hundred people around her!

The connection with the first film is strained in other ways: though we see red eyes and hear the cackle of Evil Ed at the end of the first, in this Peter Vincent is said, in passing, to have killed him in “self-defense” -- with him somehow keeping his job at the TV studio, and no *hint* as to how he could have impaled a small, naked teenager in some other teen’s house and gotten away without so much as a SCANDAL. (“The child was attempting to RAPE me, your honor, I swear it!”)
>>
>>215625370
Wasn't he actually inspired by Nazi torture methods and Ilse Koch's legacy though? Not that he was actually a Nazi ideologically.

The implication in the first film is that the body *disappeared*, but when the actor for Evil Ed refused to come back for the sequel, the writers clumsily *retconned* it -- I truly believe this was the first domino in the line of failings that led to this becoming a fun but ultimately forgettable sequel.

Remember how tough Jerry Dandridge and even his ghoul Billy were in the first? Well in this even a *pillow* will kill ‘em! They’re downright fragile! You can throw a vestment on a vamp and dissolve it in seconds! You can shine a ray of light on one of the “biggest and baddest” and she’ll just stand there and take it until she explodes! While the practicals accompanying these events are impressive, the situations in which they’re set are just too DUMB to take even halfway seriously. (The best performance goes to the crazy little monkey man in the asylum, who just hops around nattering like a Beavis without his Butthead -- THIS guy should have been the new Evil Ed! He was *so* underutilized!)

Disagree and pretty much agree with >>215636016. People just need to be more open to watching things. My only requirements are the plot line sounds goods and it's not Indian. After watching 1400+ horror movies, I'm still finding stuff that I really enjoy.

Hell, I watched 53 this year and 40-something last year, and STILL there are many things I didn't get around to. I think watching tons of movies like this is good for kinonauts, because it forces them to branch out of their comfort zones and watch all kinds of different stuff. I thought for a while Kiyoshi Kurosawa would have been up his own but, but then I watched some and discovered he's really good. More horror movies are being made all time, too, like the Damien McCarthy stuff. Maybe by this time next year Nekrokosm by Comatos Panos will be out.
>>
>>215636105
Nta, but Demons 1 & 2 are just unabashedly EXUBERANT movies, so it's hard not to like them. The surreal meta element with the documentary in the second really sucked me in too.

>>215636021
Demons is kino, it sums up what people think of a horror film of that period would be, and should be.

Was looking for a demon movie for Halloween and ended up watching the latest Conjuring movie. It's everything that's wrong with hollywood horror lately. There are times where the characters act as if they were borderline retarded. Like literally mentally challenged. And it kills the mood completely. Without spoiling anything

>character has some time of psychic power and is aware ghosts/demons exist
>hears her mother calling out to her from the attic
>starts walking towards the attic even though she was with her mother minutes ago and she was nowhere near the attic
>calls out her mom, gets no response, still goes to the attic
>enters the attic, pitch black and there's nobody
>instead of getting back because 'damn, might be a demon' she grabs a flashlight and spends hours looking for her mother
>despite the character spending a huge lot of time in the attic, obvious demon waits till the last second to attack

And that's just one example. Is there any horror film from the last 5 years that's actually scary and the characters don't act like they were fucking 3? I'm about to give up at this point, I've watched 20 something horror films this year and haven't managed to find anything

Eh, I don't know. Sometimes people are able to impart a perspective that never occurred to me, but I totally get your frustration with the "meta" element and "symbolic" film study. Because I'm not very big on it either.
>>
>>215636324
Yeah I don't have any problem with that, obviously films are for what people want to take away.
But there is a new tendency to try and "solve" abstract elements in films like a that drives me nuts when it's the only discussion on the topic I can find. There's a lack of kino enjoyers who take films as they are.
>>
>>215636374
you sound like the kind of person who'd say "I don't get it"
>>
>>215636401
>tfw I too have screamed, "This writing is retarded! These characters are babies! It should be a crime to marshal so many resources just to tell such a SHIT story!
Conveniently idiotic characters are nothing new with horror, unfortunately. Just take a stroll through the Universal monster library and you'll see tons of it.
>>
>>215636416
>Sometimes people are able to impart a perspective that never occurred to me
Sure, but sometimes their perspective is so out-of-nothing and irrelevant that it prevents the more objective elements of the movie from being discussed properly. When someone says that Lord of the Rings is riddled with gay subtext and wants to talk about that, that harms discussion of the actual qualities of the movie. It's just a frustrating distraction for no reason, that leads nowhere
>>215636456
You're the kind of person who can't talk about the direction, performances, cinematography, writing, or anything else about the film with any substance, and instead makes up nonsense to talk about based on whatever you're obsessed with in your personal life, not anything to do with the movie
>>
>>215636689
Like how people try to attribute this "transgressive" lesbian subtext to Dracula's Daughter (1936) -- but all they've done is take the absolute most SNORIFIC Universal Drac film and stuff some inexplicable horseshit up its ass. She feeds on a guy. She feeds on girls. She wants to fuck a guy, but she's a vampire. Where's the lesbianism? Nowhere!
