One of my favorite films of his with Harakiri.
Kinda hidden gem if i think about it now, not very well known and has some tragic to it, but also hint of 'Indiana Jones' if you will.
Its about samurai who abandons his clan after they do a gold heist on the shogun's ships - and kill a fishing village that witness it. He then hears the clan is in financial trouble and about to do the same heist again.
>>
>>215850980
Goyokin is solid. None of nakadai’s films are unknown except portrait of hell and a few others. I’ve seen his entire filmography. Nothing by hideogosha is “unknown”lol
>>
>>215850995
All of his films are virtually unknown to the average movie goer. You have to have an interest in Japanese films for them to be on your radar.
>>
>>215851084
Harakiri is #1 and 3 of his other films are in the top 20 on letterboxed. This isn’t 2001 anymore dude. His shit is mainstream now.
>>

Goddamn what a legend. We kneel.

"In the early 1950s, Kobayashi was preparing to shoot The Thick-Walled Room (Kabe atsuki heya, 1953), one of his early postwar films at Shochiku Studios. Around that time, he happened to notice a young man working as a clerk in a Ginza clothing store in Tokyo. That man was Tatsuya Nakadai.

Kobayashi was struck by Nakadai’s striking appearance and presence — even before seeing him act — and invited him to audition. Although Nakadai had little acting experience (he had done some stage work in amateur theater), Kobayashi saw potential in his intensity and expressive face."

Imo The New Land and The Emigrants (the 2 best Scandinavian films not by Bergman), The Exorcist, Conan the Barbarian, and Three Days of the Condor. He also had a bunch of small parts in Hollywood blockbusters (Shutter Island, Star Wars, James Bond, etc, even if they're not 'great' films, they do show a pretty solid range).

>Only postwar, ANTIWAR survivors like Kobayashi would be UP YOURS to the Japan system.
Japanese filmmakers still do that to this day.
A recent example is Kubi by Takeshi Kitano that he directed, starred in, wrote and released in 2023.
That film was 100% all about satirizing and shitting on the Sengoku era unifiers (Nobunaga, Toyotomi and Tokugawa) and the whole system of samurai feudalism.
The movie depicted every single one of the major figures of the era and their underlings as being mixtures of backstabbing, opportunistic, cowardly and/or psychotic cunts, with zero qualms about defying feudal traditions if it meant saving their own asses and ensuring progress in their campaigns of conquest.
But of course, /tv/ hated the movie because it featured a grand total of like 3-4 minutes of footage of Yasuke in its 2h11m runtime.

>backstabbing, opportunistic, cowardly and/or psychotic cunts, with zero qualms about defying feudal traditions
All true in Toyotomi's case.
>>
>>215857317
Beards need to be grown out for a while, depending on the genetics. When you shave you reset the progress because your hair doesn't all grow at the same speed. Some people grow a full beard in a week, others never, but most people can fill their patches if they wait long enough. the problem is that it looks like shit for a few months.
>>
>>215849362
>Also he mentored Koji Yakusho the toilet cleaner
Loved him in Cure and in 13 Assassins. He also has a similar soulful gaze that Nakadai has.
>>
can't think of an actor that has been in more good shit. the guy was an institution.
>>
>>215849223
Beauty standards have changed over time. Most Asians don't have facial features that are as prominent as those of other ethnicities for example many can't even grow a full beard. As a result beauty ideals tend to shift toward the local average. Additionally media consumed by young women such as the shoujo genre heavily influences their preferences.
>>
>>215853669
Kill! is also good. It came out in the late 1960s and basically satirized the samurai movies from earlier decades, including Yojimbo and Sanjuro. Nakadai's character in the movie is basically a parody version of Mifune's ronin character.
And whatever material he's in, he elevates. For example, he was the best part in a made-for-TV adaptation of 13 Assassins released in 1990. Here's the full film with subtitles on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpL6zQ1mGm8
>>
>>215857492
And to think of it he accidentally stumbled into this profession because director Masaki Kobayashi encountered him in a Tokyo shop where Nakadai worked as a clerk and thought his face looked cinematic so he cast him for a film on the spot

From what I've noticed about the japs, male and female, they seem to want the best of both worlds with masculinity and beauty all in one. A lot of that asian masculinity by the japs unironically go into their sports faggotry. If I had to guess a lot of this preference has to do with pic related, Shohei Ohtani, some random jap baseball player that is doing super human shit in america. Now all of the japanese youths want to do sports, and the japs are already doing well in other sports like boxing and kickboxing where their fighters are heeming europeans, mexicans, seajeets, other asian gooks, and americans. There are some that look nakadai such as hiroshi abe but I expect more of the masculinity to be in their sports soon, especially in baseball, mma, and footy.

>Pathetic performative 'seriousness' and 'grit'.
What a retarded fucking "argument." What about Ryunosuke's disposition is in any way performative that couldn't be applied to literally any other period samurai film or a western with an anti-hero? The movie is about how his one pride in life is feeling superior in swordsmanship. The moment that faith is shaken even a bit, he abandons his pursuit of seeming invincibility, and then all of his sins catch up to him at once. Even when you ignore that it was supposed to be a trilogy, SoD is pretty much self-contained and works as a showcase of Ryunosuke's demented vanity. What about it is edgy? At what point did the movie even remotely imply that he is anything but a sociopath?

“On my way from my home near Shibuya Station to meet a friend, an air raid siren sounded around the area past Aoyama Gakuin. Incendiary bombs came raining down. While fleeing, I searched for a place to hide. Then, I saw a girl of about six years old standing there in a daze. I grabbed her hand and ran for dear life.

At some point, I suddenly felt the hand go light. When I looked, only her left arm was in my grasp. An incendiary bomb had hit her directly, blowing her body away. I was so shocked that I instinctively let go of the arm and ran. I should have given it a proper burial...

The regret of abandoning that child lingers with me to this day. Even in the scene where the child dies in ‘The Liverhearted Mother and Her Children,’ that girl crosses my mind.
War is a cruel thing. When I die, I want to say, ‘No to war!’ and pass on.”

Please, non schizo responses. But the Japs from all those movies were pretty cool. They have great beard and were masculine as fuck. But current Japs can't even grow a decent beard. Just see them. As with every other media, you want to make money means you have to appeal to a wider audience. This means appealing to young people because they have the most amount of time.
Further more, topics like war, love, loss and changing of times appeal way more to older audience. Again, some young people might enjoy these, but you're more likely going to be successful with a topic like ... highschool life and love because that's the entirety of every young adult's life and it's very difficult to find another topic.
(There's also the homogenization of morality due to needing to create movies for a global audience, which makes every movie that comes out feeling the same)

the type of incediary bombs the us used were cluster warheads that dispersed tons of these hexagonal containers filled with napalm and had time fuses that were designed to project the burning filler upwards instead of out in a burst. it's not impossible that a bomblet with a dud or delayed fuse could've smacked a person right next to him without killing him.

however given how malleable and unreliable memory is in situations like that, let alone decades later, it being some kind of burning debris is probably more likely
