I like the "Dark Forest" theory that whoever sent the signal isn't even the original aliens, but the virus is designed to spread around the entire galaxy to wipe out any sentient life intelligent enough to receive and decode the data in the signal and create the virus.
The civilization that send out the original signal might not even exist anymore, they could have died off millions or billions of years ago, but the virus just continues to spread because it causes each species that receives it to become a hivemind with one goal; build a new continent-spanning transmission apparatus using all the resources available on the planet and making that the entire focus / goal of the virus until they build it and create a power source powerful enough in the terawatts to transmit a signal to another planet.

I see a lot of people have already come to a very strong conclusion that the other "survivors" are traitors to mankind and Carol is the only sane person out of them. The certainty many people have with this idea surprised me a little bit, because I came out of the episodes with very different feelings.

When confronted with the fact that the other English-speaking individuals are more or less fine with the situation, she is completely dismantled. She reacts with contempt towards the "traitors" and speaks as if her perspective is the only one that has any basis in reality, that she's the only one with any sense. She stands at the end of a table with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" writ in large behind her as she shouts at a people of color about how their view of the world is wrong and that the world needs to be remade how she sees fit.

This, to me, seems a deliberate connection to American imperialism and the idea that American individualism (literally, individualism!) is an inherently more correct way of life than any other. Again, I think Carol has a very reasonable perspective and she's gone through a terrible lot, but I don't think at this point in the story it matters who's right or wrong yet, what matters is how Carol is completely shut off from even considering the other perspectives to what has happened, to the unimaginable positives in the world. Of course there are also plenty of negatives, existentially terrifying ones, but it's not like she's even trying to be objective. She's drinking her worries away and belittling a south Asian woman's child in front of her, because she doesn't see him as human anymore. She never asked the people in the hivemind how it feels. And again, she literally does not see them as human anymore. They are something lesser to her, obviously, she doesn't even need to justify that thought, it just makes sense. That's some scary rhetoric, no matter her justifications.
