I ask unironically, what is arthouse? How do you define it? Is David Lynch arthouse? Even though he's mainstream...
google said Whiplash is arthouse so i guess it's just anything you can make a meme out of
>>215880423It is house md art
>>215880423that's a guy aint it
>>215880423it's art made in your bedroom>Is David Lynch arthouse?no
>>215880423that's a handsome face
Are indie films arthouse?
>>215880423Arthouse isn't a thing anymore because arthouses aren't a thing anymore. Everything's online now. Same way there's no such thing as Grindhouse because there aren't any grindhouses or B-movies because there aren't any double features. Maybe eventually certain brands will take over as the new terminology. Mubi is handling what used to be arthouses. Grindhouse kinda got replaced with real gore and porn though.
It just means arty movies, unconventional
>>215882360just because the physical location doesnt exist doesnt mean that the style or general philosophy of arthouse cinema doesnt exist. also, there are still small theaters that play international and indie films instead of hollywood major releases, there just arent as many as there used to be. and there are still film festivals
>>215880423It means films that ignore narrative or structural conventions, and prioritise a goal other than satisfying the viewer's expectations. Mainstream films can be arthouse and indie films can be genre. Lynch is arthouse, generally speaking.
>>215880423Arthouse basically means its so shit they don't expect it to make money. Its essentially just people fucking around on camera. They can't call it fucking around, that would seem like it was bullshit. So they call it arthouse as if it was in some private enclave where REAL art is made. Its just a dumb term to try and make something seem more important than it actually is
>>215882466"Arthouse" was what arthouses would play. Since there aren't arthouses anymore, the term is meaningless. If you want to say that the types of movies arthouses would have shown are now played at festivals start calling them Festival Films. Of course that doesn't really make sense since there are festivals for every kind of movie, though. The reality is current distribution methods have destroyed the old terminologies and we haven't settled on new ones yet.
