The woman on Titan having an accident and puncturing her suit, but keeping the camera on Kelly's face the whole time and not showing any if it, felt cheap. If you want the space exploration to have a real sense of peril, you show that sort of thing directly and give the viewer some vertigo and make them grit their teeth a bit.

Yeah I feel like Dev is stepping up his space piracy by stealing a whole planet. After the failed lynching and Alex's dressing down of him, he probably realized he needed to commit way more for Mars to hit his dream so he went all in to finesse all sides into Martian independence even if that means he'll get killed at the end of it. the sort of dread/fear from the mars pov was well portrayed at the start of this episode. we see all the ships coming down at the start of the episode, and then the next we see of the marines, a martian is raising his hands and trying to talk to them and they just instantly dome him. just in those few scenes i think they quite effectively set up the shock and awe vibe/established the credibility of the marine threat after they somewhat jobbed last episode

The life is gonna be the gunk they scraped off the rover.

The show should have touched on how, if you've been on Mars for a long time or if you were born there, your circulatory system would be adjusted to the lower gravity and you would likely have partial heart atrophy compared to an Earth person. So it would be very difficult or impossible to return to Earth.

I think (at least within the world of the story) had that guy not died in the asteroid explosion there might have been an attempt to go in using non lethal rounds like they'd mentioned. But after a marine got killed earth was just as hungry for Martian blood as the marines were trigger happy

Israel exists and they're still on their bullshit in the famk timeline, at least as of the s1-s2 timejump. The camp david summit was mentioned, though in their timeline it failed, presumably due to it being reagan instead of carter mediating (that's the obvious difference we know of, anyway). That would probably have pretty fucking massive implications for the middle east but it's never really explored since obviously it's not what the shows about. The assassination attempt on sadat still happens but in their timeline he survives. The Iran hostage crisis also happens, but the cia raid succeeds.

I think the non-space stuff in the time jumps is more written as random nods to real events than a serious exploration of the timeline divergence so maybe not worth paying too much mind to, but at least up until the 80s Israel was still at war with Arabs. No soviet invasion of Afghanistan and oil being made redundant by fusion mean no muhajadeen means no desert storm/war on terror, so maybe going into the 21st century the US wasn't quite as willing to bomb places for their Israeli masters

I suspect the decline in oil and the fact that Ellen was in office after reagan would have big implications for the trajectory reaganomics put the country on, and by extension its relationship with aipac/lobbying as a whole, but again, the show just doesn't go into that level of detail

The other guys are quite open about the fact that it was made clear to them during training that they should consider all that stuff irrelevant, that their priorities are mission success, their lives, and their squadmate's lives in that order and anything goes in pursuit of those goals. It's legitimately chilling to watch them talk about it - they can intellectually acknowledge that there were times where they straight up murdered civilians out of convenience but they talk about it with zero emotion or regret; they just got in the way, so they were gotten out of the way.

They really fuck with these guys heads man.
