Maybe it's just me, but screwball comedies with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn (Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story) are headache-inducing. Cary Grant doesn't really do much for me, and Hepburn in these loud, fast-talking roles is fucking unbearable, though part of it is probably the writing.
I actually preferred a smaller Hawks film like Ball of Fire, co-written by Billy Wilder. Way more charming. Plus the Gary Cooper/Barbara Stanwyck pairing actually makes you root for them, instead of wanting to strangle them halfway through.
>>
I didn't know this but Kubrick's wife was a painter and she provided some paintings to be used onset on some of his films. Not pic related though. This is probably after Stanley and the family dog passed away. Pretty interesting.
>>
A ridiculous filename but I stick to my principle of not renaming files (unless it's like a single character or 1920x)

>Sir Ridley is a fellow Harriet Andersson enjoyer.
She was perfect in Through a Glass, Darkly. Everything works pefectly in that film, actually. Even the breeze of the wind. Those who bemoan the dialogue in the conclusion... Yes, it is abrupt and expository. So what? Is it not enough the depth of message carried by the ~90 minutes of moving pictures in the film?

Out of Sight is fine, great Leonard adaptation in a vacuum. Fantastic chemistry whenever the couple is on screen. But it's amateur hour TV-tier compared to Jackie Brown's masterclass in writing, acting and directing, it's on a whole other level. I'm glad both exist as a fun double feature but rewatching them both back-to-back is brutal. I had forgotten he was already doing his hack color filter gimmick.

Cannes isn't what it used to be. None of the big festivals are. They've all become way too commercialised - that's why we're now getting complete mainstream flicks premiering at festivals. Big names draw sponsors, artistic merit does not.

Worst Cannes lineup to date, full of melodramatic Oscar bait or just slop. Hope should get the Palm just to make the critics seethe that an action flick got it because of Korean nepotism. Anything else getting the Palm would be boring as fuck because all other movies in competition are fucking boring. Nothing bold formally. Maybe The Dreamed Adventure that's getting roasted by modern low IQ audience of Cannes because it's supposedly extremely slow paced. I liked Western from the same director.

Yes, he is 90% shit with the exception of Santa sangre and La montaña sagrada. Santa sangre also has retarded shit in it... his problem is that he made the "le spiritual dude" his whole identity.
I've also reconsidered El incal, can't believe some say it is the best comic of all time. I think he's another eccentric hack just like Dalí, a lot of theatrics with little substance behind the facade.
However, I think his Dune would've mogged both Lynch and Villeneuve's in interest alone.

it was executive produced/distributed by the Weinsteins btw
>As Bob himself recalled, “I used to go into Chase Manhattan Bank on my knees, to start out with, then I’d be on my belly, begging for money. You’d be trying to explain Jane Campion to bankers and, then, mid-sentence, you’d think, Why am I even talking?”

>>
>>220696877
>Ptak said, “Harvey, let me ask you a question: Why did you tell everybody that Miramax has had nine pictures that have grosssed over $13.5 million in North America?”
>“Why, whaddya mean?”
>“Because it’s not true. You’ve only had three.”
>“You didn’t tell ’em, did you?” Weinstein asked, turning pale.
>“I had to, otherwise I’m lying to them too.”
>“Oh, no, this whole thing’s gonna blow up—John, why’d you tell ’em?”
>“What I told ’em was this was just an example of your creative enthusiasm, how much you wanted this movie.” Weinstein threw his arms around Ptak, gave him a hug, and Miramax got the film. Ptak returned to Los Angeles to tell the other distributors that The Piano was off the table. He says, “Everyone was furious with me, but it was a real compliment to Harvey.”
>Soon after the deal was concluded, the Weinsteins took The Piano to Cannes, where it and another Miramax film, Chen Kaige’s Farewell My Concubine, shared the Palme d’Or. In mid-November 1993, Miramax released The Piano, to rave reviews.
>It went on to gross an astonishing $40 million in the U.S. alone. The Weinsteins would get ten Oscar nominations that year, eight for The Piano and two for Concubine.

Well consider Ms .45 officially burned directly into my brain, absolute high kinography. Death Wish, but actually good and with 1000% more style, attitude and dame oglage. Like Cat People it hits that perfect sweet spot between art and gutter trash that scratches every itch I have at the same time. Zoë immediately rocketed into a top 5 spot in the harem, I love her striking features and she's just captivating to look at in motion. I liked it even more than Bad Lieutenant, it's going to be very hard for Ferrara to top this for me but I'm still excited to watch the rest.
