>>220686338I found it interesting because it opens up so many avenues of interpretationI personally think Fred's wife was a whore who was doing gangbangs and pornos, and he killed Dick Whitman in a jealous rage and those events playing out in the second half are because he tried to suppress the memory of it but failed. That's why he turns back into Pullman after the desert sex scene. The cracks start showing in his fictionalized version of his wife of then she drops the "you can never have me" bombshell and the fantasy is over. He's back to being the jealous cuck who's guilty of murder and fucked up his life. He goes back to his house to announce Dick Whitman's death because that's the moment he flipped out and his dissociative episode began, which is why it's also the beginning of the film. The thing that most people don't seem to consider is that we never see Fred in the "real" world. It can't be the real world because he didn't actually loop back in time to talk to himself and even if he did murder his wife no one was there recording it. Even the beginning of the movie is surreal, it's all in his head.

He actually also kind of wants him to kill and be strong though, try and save face. He was getting executed at the end of the film, which shows him being unable to maintain the illusion, yet his mind allowed him to create a hallucination to deal with the trauma of being a murdering cuck who got caught.
