I usually just use the weekend to rest and recharge after my 5-day work week, lots of sleep, relaxing, and taking it easy to recover. Waking up at 7am five days straight really takes it out of you.
I will definitely watch the Mummy tomorrow. Pretty annoying that it literally says “Lee Cronin’s.” I really don’t like when directors do that.

Your movie club’s ban heavily targets modern “elevated” horror, cult gore franchises, transgressive body horror, and ironic/meta horror-comedy.

major themes jump out:

* The “Elevated horror” / A24-style horror

A huge chunk are critically acclaimed arthouse horror movies:

* Hereditary
* Midsommar
* Talk to Me
* It Follows
* Longlegs
* Barbarian
* Nope
* The Babadook

* slow-burn psychological horror
* metaphor-heavy horror
* “prestige horror”
* movies people online hype as “deep”

Horror nerd dork movies
* Army of Darkness
* Gremlins
* The Return of the Living Dead
* A Nightmare on Elm Street series
* Lair of the White Worm
* VHS franchise during October

They may be trying to avoid “obvious horror club picks” and force people into more obscure selectitions

You explicitly mentioned:

* horror-comedies banned
* animation banned

That removes:

* campy fun horror
* goofy cult classics
* animated horror/anime horror

5. “Feminist horror” ban

That’s a major clue because many of these films are commonly discussed through:

* trauma
* gender
* grief
* social commentary

Examples:

* Midsommar
* The Babadook
* Barbarian
* Talk to Me

So the club may specifically dislike:

* social-commentary horror
* “trauma allegory” horror
* movies discussed in academic / online discourse
Overall vibe of the ban list

The underlying theme is probably something like:

“No mainstream horror discourse movies, no prestige/A24 horror, no ultra-gory shock horror, no camp-comedy horror, and no over-discussed cult classics.”

It feels less like a single genre ban and more

* avoiding “basic horror fan canon”
* avoiding movies everyone online already talks about
* avoiding divisive discourse-heavy horror
* forcing deeper cuts or unusual picks

Honestly, it reads like a club trying very hard to prevent people from picking:

* the most popular Letterboxd horror movies
* Reddit horror favorites
* or “safe” horror club choices.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I think it's an actual 10/10. It's just ambiguous enough to keep me up at night.
Also it's beautiful and Lynchian
>>
Do you guys think “the backrooms” has any potential? I’m genuinely not sure. The zoom zoom director was born the year I graduated high school. I like the mythos (from what I’ve read anyway) definitely has potential but IDK. Also lol at that stupid picture with him and the guy who did obsession, that weirdo from Dead Meat. That dude is weird as fuck, like skeletons in his closet vibe, his wife too. Wouldn not be the least bit surprised if those two get exposed for something weird
>>
>>220693616
I don't think the year the director was born in has an impact on the film quality unless he's like 19.
That said, it's going to be shit. It's based on a 4chan creepypasta.
>>
>>220693616
50/50. I'm not sure it'll survive the transition to a full length film. You need more than a concept and a jumpscare to do that, you need a story arc.
Introducing two main characters is probably smart to pad it out. But he needs to invent something new and exciting for how it progresses. The short had an great ending, but the film would need something else.

Really well paced, great gore effects, well done stop motion, fun cast - I enjoyed it.
Also like Puppet Master it had this dreamy operatic soundtrack.
I wonder if it had an influence on Child's Play, or if that was already written? The flesh inside dolls part was a core (and excellent) twist in both.

Just finished The Beast Within. I'd forgotten about the opening scene, which is a flashback where a woman gets raped by a werewolf which leads to the lead beast played by Paul Clemens who does a terrific job. Unfortunately, the pacing thereafter gets pretty bogged down by the sheriff and other townsfolk "investigating things". I wouldn't mind if it'd been more sporadic, but it's literally every other scene. Also, I must've fast-forwarded to the end when I watched it before, because the special effect like in picrel only show up in the last 20 mins, which is pure kino. Oh yeah, and he had a cutie gf played by Katherine Moffat. Other than that, I can't really give it a full recommend, but it's not awful.

Anyway, tomorrow I'll put on Savage Weekend or Valley of Death (or perhaps both), which hopefully ends up better.

There are different tiers of progression in horror fandom and I'd put the three movies mentioned so far at a sophomore level, and even then it isn't necessary to like every movie to be within a tier, just to have watched it. I don't think a person can claim to be a horror fan if they haven't seen Saw, but I fucking hate that movie. I think you have to see Nosferatu '22 also, but can understand not enjoying a silent movie. I think the main qualification for being a fan is openness and trying something out even if you think you might dislike it.
>>
>>220694964
Do you think Creepshow is up there?

>>220696136
I will never be a woman, as they say. I've been watching horror for decades and this just happens to be the movie that disturbed me the most.

>>220696183
What's there to explain? The scenario and events are grotesque and /hor/rifying, and the whole thing feels grounded and believable. Gore and supernatural shit doesn't really do it for me anymore for the most part. There are exceptions though, like in that movie Thelma where the protagonist is jealous of a girl so there's a scene in her apartment where all of a sudden you see her fly out of the window, screaming, before the sound cuts out completely and the window goes back to the way it was before, but the girl is gone. Where is she? In some pocket dimension to float for all eternity? Or just dead. Either way the way it's handled has always stuck with me, not even a horror film just a spooky concept that someone could condemn another person to eternal suffering or non existence at a whim to gratify their selfish desires. Anyway fuck the doubters, I'm outtie, gonna go watch Leprechaun.

Are there literally no zoomer horror movies with nudity in them? Like what gives. That safe edgy shit like Terrifier casts a smoking hot Italian bitch with a killer bod, and the best we get is a tease in the shower. I think someone’s gotta make a slasher , something really low budget, and try to find some big breasted onlyfans zoomettes who are comfortable being naked on camera to act in it. I am interested in the backrooms and I thought the trailers were good, but I recently watched some of the youtube series he did and am a bit more skeptical. Aside from some occasionally interesting aesthetics, there wasn't much to it and I think he went a bit too far trying to "explain" the lore and mystery. Maybe the movie will be different, but I suspect it will be one of those movies with a really intriguing and tense first half that just devolves into nonsensical chaos in the second half, but we'll see

>LEGENDARY HORROR MAESTRO DARIO ARGENTO HAS ANNOUNCED A NEW TRILOGY OF HORROR FILMS!

>‘FLESH OF MY FLESH’, ‘THE GIRL WITH CRYSTAL EYES’, AND ‘THE BLACK VELVET MASK’.

>WHICH HE WILL ... produce, not direct
>>
>>220701335
Flesh of My Flesh tells the story of three mothers investigating the disappearance of a teenage girl. It’s described as “a realistic and unsparing portrait of evil in its most unsettling form: everyday, unsuspected, the evil next door” as well as a “deliberate departure from Argento’s signature atmospheric horror.” The film “marks a new register for the maestro’s storytelling.”

The Girl With Crystal Eyes follows the encounter between a charming businessman and a mysterious woman whose passion drags him into a spiral of tragic murders.

The Black Velvet Mask explores the minds of three young women from different social backgrounds and origins, united by the same nightmare: a man in a black velvet mask assaults them and throws them from a balcony. The victims manage to unmask him — but when they wake, they cannot remember his face.

I watched Lee Cronin's Mummy.
I wasn't sure what to expect going in. I was pleasantly surprised by the opening 30 minutes. But I was also kind of annoyed because I feel like the key to making a good horror is that the victims 'sort of' deserve it (not always obviously). And the family did nothing wrong. It's like "here's a nice, normal family, now watch as their daughter gets kidnapped for 8 years lmao".
But after that it just gets boring and they constantly act like retards. "Hey, she just headbutted her grandma and can't talk. Maybe we should like take her to a special centre or something?" "Nah"
"Okay so she just bit into her dead grandma's neck (and btw not totally convinced she didn't have something to do with killing her) and then drank the oozing embalming fluid from her in front of all the guests. And our younger daughter just tried to murder one of our guests, also by biting him in the neck. Do you think maybe we should do literally anything?" Yeah okay let's lock her in her room and wonder what to do next"
And don't even get me started on the Egyptian cop. I guess in Egypt there's literally no due process?
I feel like it had a lot of potential but like it was just kind of shit. Shame.
>>
>>220702175
You're not wrong, but you're overthinking it. It was just meant to be a purposefully gross and offputting body horror/splatter movie. Dialog and character decisions are bad and nonsensical, but that's to be expected from a Blumhouse movie. Egyptian cop was cute.

The focus tested feel good ending was by far the worst part of the movie.

What are some non Italian giallo inspired movies tho?
>>
>>220704971
Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, and Cruising definitely pretty inspired by giallo movies. I imagine that De Palma is a pretty big fan Argento fan.

More recently, Malignant definitely has giallo influence in it. There was a Canadian parody of giallo movies called The Editor that released a few years back too.

I'd say that's more slasher than giallo. Dressed to Kill and especially Blow Out have the black gloved killers using razors and ice picks and stuff. The one scene in Blow Out where the killer takes the ice pick, stalks the lady, and then kills is shot and framed identically to a giallo.

She looked pretty terrible in Dark Glasses even though I enjoyed that movie immensely. Dario Argento doesn’t make bad movies.
Also, on my instagram, the best looking girl on it I have had on it since 2018, well, she aged out. And guess what? She got implants, and botox and lip fillers.

>I feel like the key to making a good horror is that the victims 'sort of' deserve it
I don't think this is true but I understand why you're reaching for it. In the original Evil Dead for example none of the characters deserve anything (well, Scott is a bit of an asshole).
But I'm circling around the idea Cronin's characters have no light to them. There's only defeated sadness, frailty, worry, increasingly hopeless attempts at putting the pieces of their lives back together. Also the losses they face aren't just friends, they're children, and perhaps our minds just sequester them differently.
Most films feature absurd turns of acceptance -> courage -> fight that fly under the radar to suspend disbelief.
Like a lot of endings the final girl might kiss a hero, when in real life if someone's entire friend group had been massacred they would be uncontrollably hysterical.
In Cronin's films, I'm pretty sure there's never even slivers of hope or relief for the characters until the very end.

3 was indeed a bit woke, how do you have two people inside a shower, completely naked, getting disembowled by chainsaws, and not show any nudity? why go all out if you arent going to make it raw?
also there were 3 female deaths as opposed to like 14 male deaths. he went way overboard because everyone was calling the movies misogynistic.
Damien Leone claims he never intended for Art to target women, but thats a damn lie. All Hallows Eve made it clear he targeted women with the "pig bitch slut whore cunt" carvings, and Terrifier 1 is clearly him targeting women
EVEN MORE, the Call of Duty Terrifier skin EVEN SAYS "he prefers women"

3 being shot on film helps, it looks great.
I'm an actual incel-chud so I just cant get over the blatant pandering to the "terrifier is mysoginistic" people.

I wonder how they will handle Siennas cousin "Gabby" actress aging up before they shoot 4. They confirmed the movie will take place around new years eve, which means it will probably take place a few days after the end lf 3.

So, Gabby falls into hell with the sword. Sienna goes to hell to resue her. They escape using a rocketship to the moon. Unironically. In 3 they made it a whe scene about "sienna and gabby in a cardboard rocketship to the moon"

thats how they'll escape hell. its gonna connect to all hallows eve too. screencsp this.

Some good deaths, I guess, but I've always maintained that if a film can't frighten people through dread and relies on gore, then it's not a great horror.

I was thinking of watching Elvira so I watched a trailer on youtube. Am I wrong, or is it just a bunch of "hey buddy, my eyes are up here!" jokes.
