Suddenly looking like an epic fucking masterpiece, isn't it?
>>
>>220692120
Yes.
>>
>>220692120
I always liked it, I never cared what the plebs and trannies said.
>>
Depends on if you're watching the theatrical cut, director's cut, Alexander Revisited: The Final Unrated Cut, or Alexander – The Ultimate Cut
>>
>>220692120
Fuck no. What's wrong with you?
>>
no it still sucks
the choppy slow mo thing Stone used in Any Given Sunday absolutely did not work the in battles in this flick

*ultimate cut
>>
>>220692707
I thought the theatrical cut was good. I bought the director's cut and thought it was shit, have't seen the others.
>>
>>220692120
It was fine and most criticism was based on Americans not being to handle a gay Alexander.
>muh historical accuracy

The movie did better overseas too.
It wasn't great but it was fine. The main problem was focusing too much on whiny Alexander over inspiring and "great" Alexander. Like Ridley Scott's Napoleon if failed to capture what made the person famous and beloved in the first place.
>>
It was a failure. But what failure! Oliver Stones' failure towers above the accomplishments of others.
>>
>>220692120
I always like the movie, never understood the hate towards it.
>>
>>220692120

>>
>>220692120
Was he the toughest gay in history?
>>
>>220694437
What the fuck is that exposure
>>
it was seen as a boring failure, but today it would be a huge success. There's something really really wrong with the quality of modern showbusiness. I think it's women's fault
>>
>>220694436
I understand the hate, but it had fantastic aspects
>music
>intro speech by Hopkins
>Alexander's youth
>Val Kilmer's performance and character

It's one of the few movies that communicates a person's legend vs his behaviors at the time, in the moment, and then where one is looking back to past events (Hopkin's character), the guy realises
>Huh... so this is what it takes to be a world conqueror. I guess we were actually fucking awesome
>>
Why was a Mexican woman in ancient Greece?
>>
>>220695273
I mean, it deserved all the criticism it got then, but it's better than recent successes like Dune.

One of the hardest bisexuals in history yes. It’s widely believed that he also clapped some man ass now and again. It’s not really important. Alexander was a tough and insane little dwarf, who liked to drink and kill.

The average popcorn slop from 20 years ago looks like a masterpiece now. The standard in film hasn't just dropped, it's completely plummeted right across the board. The medium is in a dire state.

No.

Oh my heckin science wtf is brotherhood? Wy would a man ever die for another man if there was no profit to be made? The only other reason si they were fucking and sucking each other.
>>
>>220692120
It's honestly pretty fucking good except for Rosario Dawson... But her boobs are ok.

Kilmer as Philip is so fucking kino and bucephalus' actor is incredible.
>>220695272
All the colours wash out except for red, in the end of the scene.
>>
>>220692120
Always thought it got too much shit. I think people were too critical of the gay stuff.
It's not like we have a better Alexander biopic.
>>
>>220695786
Yeah. We really didn’t appreciate how good we had it. I watched Troy a few weeks ago, which at the time was considered at the time a mid swords and sandals flick, and it blows almost anything done in the past 10-15 years completely out of the water. It’s shocking to see how far Western cinema has fallen in prioritising demagoguery over entertainment and storytelling.

One a serious note though its very up and down.
Kilmer was kino, but Jolie was cringe.
The battles were more kinetic than any i've seen in other films, but some of the dramatic scenes were overwrought. Still some of the drama scenes were well done.
I have a special affection for it since I watched it a ton as a teenager.
The best scenes:
>Alexander gets Bucephalus

The only mistake was not making a trilogy. An entire life as eventful as his, even cut short, is too much for a single movie, especially when so many people have similar names.

>people saying it was good out of the sudden

Have you lost your mind? This movie was a big joke when it came out. It's corny as shit, with some of the worst 2000s trends thrown in, the dialogue is piss poor and absolutely forgetable, it had awful pacing and a very awkward casting. I say awkward because the actors themselves are good in other roles, but they feel so fucking out of place in this. It had nice set pieces and costumes, that's as far as I can compliment it.

Troy also sucks for similar reasons.

Don't let Nolan's Odyssey do to these films what Disney SW did to the prequels. They all suck, face it.

Its corny and overacted like the entire movie but its so earnest the entire time that i cant stop thinking about it

Maybe its because every movie these days is a self aware irony fest but i really like how sincere the whole movie felt

The timeline is too spread out for it being a direct causation. The real cause is that the Hellenics were always infighting retards and it was only a matter of time before someone else successfully swooped in.
Not that it was so catastrophic for them, the Romans may have won militarily and politically but the Greek culture conquered Rome in return.

Yes, which is absolutely braindead. Nobody bats an eye when actors with english accents play ancient greeks and romans, or even worse, when a non-british actor puts on a fake english accent to play an ancient greek or roman. But let a native irishman use his real voice and suddenly this is unrealistic?

I could see this argument being valid if other historical dramas made an effort to simulate the actual accents of ancient greeks. But they fucking don't, and never have.

One of the funniest parts, I don’t think they expected him to say the line like that, Collin Farrell breaks character for a second and they look at each other confused

the hate was because the story wasn't cohesive even though it's the actual story (leaving out some conquests along the way but still)

I've seen both, the regular version and the directos cut.It doesn't look like a masterpiece in any way or form.

The bar for success has been set so low by Netflix that "not terrible 20 years ago" = modern fucking masterpiece.

i absolutely love this movie and always have.

while the narrative itself takes liberties by moving things around, combining events for efficiency and to weave a cohesive story fit for a movie - the direction is incredibly accurate (for a movie). Modern morales aren't projected unto historical figures and the production design is staggeringly beautiful and well researched.

the battle of gaugamela is probably the best battle in a movie ever

nta but yeah
Rodney Dangerfield did not hit it big until his 40s. Steven Seagal didn't become a full meme until his late 30s early 40s.

>"uh... we owe a apology to Objective Shit" (<---------You are here, with Alexander)

getting real tired of this chain of logic

Havent seen the movie but from these pictures here, the costuming looks like the most accurate of all historical movies

iirc Oliver's script on set was like a huge notebook that included historical records with excerpts of what people like Alexander were saying and doing at the time. It looked extremely autismal in the best possible way.

The good thing about every modern movie being vomit inducing garbage is that we learn to appreciate what we had back then.

Not theatrical. Do 1st Director's Cut.

I actually don't like this cut of his speech but I've always loved when he yells "ZEUS BE WITH US" and starts riding and the music kicks in.
Also - Alexander was a tactical genius.
