I've finally seen enough high quality art of this series on Twitter to really consider either downloading the game/watching the anime. Will I enjoy them even if I don't really give a shit about horse racing or horses in general? I do like sports anime and manga but ones with all girl casts don't generally do as well in the story/character department (unless you count the original Love Live as a pseudo team sport anime).

Just downloaded the game and I'm already pretty blown away by the production value of it. I managed to get the fiery 3-star version of the girl whose character design I like the best with my first 10-pull so I think this a sign I should keep playing. Someone said the ships are pretty straightforward in the anime so I'm looking forward to watching with my goggles on.

Just finished watching S2 and Uma Musume's growth as a franchise reminds me a lot of the original Love Live. The first season is just okay, people forget about it quickly, then a much stronger season 2 rolls around, a well done gacha game releases alongside it, fanart explodes on social media, and everyone and their friends who never heard of the series or were initially offput by it start checking out the game/anime in droves. Just a solid painting of an uma gets like 50k+ likes on twitter alone now, it's clear the series is taking off in Japan with just the game alone so the whole male trainer hijinks thing really only seems like a barrier of entry to Western fans who aren't told by friends to stick through S1 to get to the better S2.
