Instead of the visual novel being scripted, rather the "creator"(not Dan, the fictional one) of the game created A.I.s which are then influenced to make it look like a dating sim. In the deeper lore, all 4 are actually from another game/reality/whatever.Whether they are from another game/reallife or whether they are A.I.s, they have free will. Just remember the Natsuki poem scene shortly before Monika takes full control. She was able to break from the forced brainwashing to talk to the MC directly via a poem, assuming whoever is controlling them can't see the poems. If she were 'just' part of the game with no free will, then Monikas influence on their personality wouldn't have allowed that.

I want to write a fanfic with Monika as the focus. She wakes up one day to realise she is no longer in the game, no longer bound by script and rules. She freaks out, bursts up and down in joy, and fawns over her friends real and unscripted behaviour... Only for Sayori to ask if she's taken her medication today.The story goes on as Monika tries to piece together her own life, large parts of it non-existent in her memory. She sees sprites of her dead friends, lines of code telling her what to do and is plagued by breakdowns of reality. But she also knows things she shouldn't, like why does she keep staring at yuri as she leaves to make tea, why does she keep pestering natsuki about her homelife. Is she imagining these issues, or are they real. Was the game even real.My only stump is who to ship her with
