Please teach me your secrets to exporting toning. How do you get the dots to look decent? Are those brushes or toning layers?

Sure, what program are you using? Medibang and CSP have different methods. Your canvas size matters, too. It would also help if you have a sample image to show me what you have and what you want to achieve.

CSP. It might just be that I'm working too big since I start with a canvas in the 4-6000x4-6000 range. I've tried both tone brushes with a set dot distribution and CSP's variable toning layer, which I guess is just some sort of modifiable material set. Occasionally I can get things to look nice at one specific export size like 100/50/25%, but then if the page displaying the image after upload is in anything besides fullsized the pattern will either dissolve into flat grey or get all stripey. Can't seem to get it to just work nice and crisp at various zoom levels the way your stuff always seems to be.

Especially can't seem to get nice low density toning. Which now that you've brought it up, really makes me think it might just be a sizing issue and exporting not being able to preserve the dots well when it has to lower resolution by so much.

If it blurs without proper gradation it’s usually because the drawing and the tone dpi doesn’t match (the drawing is too small). A4 default with 600 dpi is ideal, only crop down if necessary. Color space matters as well (if you do grayscale vs monochrome, you want the latter). From your picture (the skirt shading) it looks like the texture’s color space is wrong (grayscale?). I use only the default CSP tone layer mode (the one that allows you to manually adjust dot density), you can put any texture in and change it into dots without any loss in quality, maybe try that out? Some cheats with tones is that you can layer them to get a darker tone- if done correctly, (monochrome + multiply mode) you can etch out shades with texture brushes so they’ll end up sharp. I use a basic cross hatching brush with random rotation setting (available on both MB and CSP) to erase/white out parts. After you’re done with it looking correctly at the biggest size then only export and downscale it to post. Without actually seeing your working file this is all I can think might be the problem. Hope this helps in troubleshooting.

Oh and one important thing about tone dot density- keep it consistent across layers/pages. If different dot densities overlap they create moire as well. If you want to gradient without overlapping, put a clipping mask layer with the gradient over your shape.

Well I feel real stupid. I've always just taken it for granted that DPI didn't matter for anything besides the functions of physical printing, and never bothered doing anything besides setting it to 300. At that DPI, in program (even while drawing) turning the tone's frequency higher than 60 would just blend to a solid tone if I was zoomed out at all. So working with tone layers at all was a huge hassle.
