I didn't think they could make a game with worse writing and more forgettable characters than Fates but damn, Nintendo never fails to disappoint. Also somehow managed to make Engage less aesthetically pleasing than a 3DS game with its generic run of the mill artstyle, clumsy presentation, zero atmosphere and cutscenes that look like they were done in Koikatsu. To top it off they let you savescum so it's like you're playing in Phoenix mode by default and it makes the whole experience a joke that you deliberately have to gimp yourself in order to be able lose in the first place. Who the hell is this game for? Did they get rid of their entire staff from the previous game? It's so fucking unrecognizable.

I don't hate the characters, but there's too many and none of them are fleshed out.Every character in 3H being the Lord or Lady of a House is free backstory and story relevance. Being a retainer is also the cheapest way to add characters. Even PoR and RD which had tons of characters at least made their characters have actual real jobs and not just come packaged with a noble.

Personally I'm having a blast with Engage. In regards to the pairing situations:FByleth had access to 3 real pairing options outside of meme picks like Rhea and Sothis. Edelgard was set up to be the love interest on Crimson Flower by the story itself.FAlear is spoiled for choice and has access to any of the girls without any of the main story interference except potentially Ivy and Veyle, so people are still deciding what pairing they like most.The thing that hurts Engage the most is the lack of paired endings for other characters which removes a lot of the "fun" of the support shipping system.

I was going through the old 3H folder just for kicks. Why save thousands of images if you'd never look at them again? It's the stuff with timestamps older than 3H itself that caught my eye, like this one drawn and posted months before the game came out, not too long after female Byleth was first revealed.
A month before the game came out, or rather a few weeks before the game leaked early. That massive flurry of images from when the game leaked, and of course, the fact that Edelgard was a yuri option.It's like a time capsule, it's environmental storytelling in the digital space. I think the Engage hate is overblown. Storywise it's not much different from GBA/(3)DS era games. Gameplay wise Lunatic is the most fun I've had since New Mystery because it's so player phase focused. And character-wise there are a lot of cute girls with interesting personalities, it's just that you have to get into supports to learn more about them like the olden days, since they aren't front and center in the story like 3H.

I'll throw in another positive opinion and say I'm having a ton of fun with Engage. 50 hours in and I'm still hooked.If someone wanted more of the complexity of the characters and world building 3H had I get why it wouldn't be their thing but people who liked the older games will appreciate the gameplay and goofy fanservice and for people who liked fates/awakening it's definitely most similar to that in tone, especially the supports. The game's sense of humor is very funny and charming.In terms of the /u/ front I think both Ivy/Alear and Alear/Veyle are really cute and there are still appealing dynamics among the non MC cast too, although admittedly I haven't come across any that come off as strongly as those two yet.
It really comes down to personal opinion, but this is /u/ and not /v/ so we're not really meant to talk about the game itself and doing so brings up pointless and irrelevant discussion. I was disappointed because the FE franchise had been on a consistent upward progression of more and more gay content which peaked in 3H. I have not finished Engage so I can't really speak as to how much /u/ content it has. With that said, I do also think that the relationships between the female characters are a big step down from 3H. These shorter, more shallow support conversations are disappointing. I really enjoyed the relationships between the women of Fódlan, even when they weren't romantic. I'm not sure what brought them to the decision of walking back towards supports that are unmemorable and don't really mean anything.
