Reincarnation is a bullshit copout. It's a shallow, middle-of-the road attempt to be "bittersweet" for cowards that can't commit to tragedy and are too insecure to depict a happy endings out of some misguided belief that it isn't "mature". You break the continuity of the story to give facsimiles of the original characters a good end divorced from the original conflict. These new characters have no investment from the audience because they are devoid of any experience the originals went through. They're blank slates with untold, irrelevant stories, that the audience is expected to care for because they happen to bear visual resemblance to the characters we do care about. You cannot project the experience of the original characters on to the new ones because they are not characterized by that experience. The exception to this is with continuity of consciousness, that is to say the characters recall their past and act with characterization consistent with their previous incarnations. This begs the question of why bother with the whole scenario of reincarnation instead of maintaining the continuity of the originals' lives, which can have context-sensitive justification, but can still miss the mark. Killing a couple together and leaving it at that has more impact because it acknowledges and emphasizes the finality of their story.
