What made this pairing explode back then? What made you love this pairing? To me a big part of it is knowing Edelgard's fate in the other routes. To see how far she's willing to go for her ideals and the price she'd potentially pay really cemented her character and her relationships to me.

Like that's how they try to handwave it away by going oh she's the dreaded ashen demon and has somewhat stunted emotions but that's always been a cop out to aid self inserting. You can write stoic characters who still speak, and Byleth having maybe 5% of Edelgard's dialog tops is a really jarring asymmetry. And it brings the pairing down when Edelgard pours her heart out for like 10 dialog boxes in a row and then gets overjoyed at Byleth's single bland line in response.
