I fucking hate Magic Garden so much

For me, it's Mortol
>>689440709You can freely discuss non-woke vidya. But you're a marketer for woke shit
>>689440529I liked it when I was gold trophying itNow that it's cheery mode, I hate it
>>689438108Kick club: Decent platformer "kick the ball into enemies" game, I just thought it was boring though.Avianos: It's sorta like card game Civ 5? You choose a god from 3 out of 5 and they give you resources, spend resources, or raise units, and you want to capture stuff. I kinda liked it, but I'll save it for way later, probably, I'm not gripped.Mooncat: Wtf I played this whole game to the end, the controls are weird-ish, but honestly fine, I liked the weird stuff I kept finding and the controls grew on me. Being my only gold cart so far and the game said I got 1 of 3 eggs, I'll definitely play it again.Bushido ball: Kind of like pong, but with samurai gimmicks. I beat 2 competitors in the tournament and dipped, and I'm not excited to go back basically.Block Koala: Sokoban but with numbered blocks. Only blocks in descending or equal order can be pushed, so you can push a chain of 5-4-3-2 blocks in a row, but not a chain of 2-3 blocks. Honestly, I'm not interested in sokoban, I don't think I'll go back.

>>689441132Camoflage: Sort of linear puzzle game where you change your color to pass one area, which allows you to get a color to pass another area, and repeat. It's ok, but I dont think I'll go back.Campanella: Hey it's the helicopter game from highschool!!! but it's kinda boring and I don't want to play it.Golfaria: Holy crap legend of zelda but you're a golf ball, and it's open world. I really like it, favorited it, and I'm going back to it for sure. The great bell race: It's campanella but as a racing game, but I dont really like campanella, so I sorta snooze on it.Warptank: It's VVVVVV but you're a tank and can't actually jump except by teleporting to another wall. I kinda liked it ngl.20/50.

is every game in this pretty difficult or am I nuts? Barbuta I cherried since it's not so much about reflexes or anything, just planning Bug Hunter, Ninpek and Paint Chase are all quite challenging, to me at least. Ninpek especially
>>689444395ninpek is not that bad if you are used to arcade action platformers imo
>>689444395I find every game difficult and I'm impressed you cherried Barbuta

>>689443005Waldorf's Journey: It's fucking jump king, I hate jump king. I dont wanna go back to it.Porgy: This might be the first game that looks like it was created for SNES rather than NES. Underwater exploration game, you explore as far as you can with your remaining fuel and then go back to restock. there are underwater fuel tanks which can extend your fuel supply permanently. I kinda liked it honestly.Onion Delivery: Chaotic top down GTA driving simulator where you have to get to 5 places every day, and every day things get more chaotic and more crazy shit happens. It's fine honestly, I kinda liked it.Caramel Caramel: It's life force(2d space shooter), I don't really care for these kind of games at all.Party House: It's kinda like a card game, you build a deck of partygoers, pull one card per click, and when you end the party/fill your board up you get points for each. Some goers create trouble, get too much and that round is invalidated. I really liked it, favorite it, and I'll go back to it.25/50, halfway through, some nice games so far, I like mortol, velgress, warp tank, mooncat, golfaria, porgy, and devilition.
>>689441221WTF? It has a win state and the palettes swap colors?? I bounce off of this game so hard and so fast... I will likely never see that shit, sadly.

I like it, I'm interested to see what they'll do with it, favorited it and I'll go back to it.Train Heist: Decent stealth game where entering the line of sight of an enemy instantly kills you. It's kinda nice, I guess.Vainger: If I had a nickel for every time there was a VVVVVV-like game in this compilation, I'd have two nickels. It's basically metroid but you can reverse gravity on yourself all the time, it's fun.
>>689440298>Generals aren't allowed on this board.Good one.

>>689447382The yellow blocks? You have to torpedo into a block to create a step earlier in the level, which allows the walking guy to come down and walk back and forth over the switch, alternating these yellow tiles.
>>689447204Wait I forgot the 30th game.Rock On Island: It's pretty good, it's basically bloons TD but very simplified. I don't feel like playing it though, I have enough TDs.30/50

Where do I use the key and magic rod in Barbuta?
HAH, fuck youI thought the cherry required 3 loops. got pretty far on the 2nd and the 2nd loop feels easier somehow, so shouldn't be too hard
Nintendo wins again. literally what will happen new Earthbound i not making that up. i win again.
>>689448259The magic rod is basically just a better weapon than the base sword since it has range. The key goes to the top of the map, you need the necklace to activate all the moving platforms
>>689448259magic rod is just for attacking. key is used 'upstairs', the first screen outside the starting room to the left, you'll need the necklace first. if you haven't found the necklace, look for a chest you probably keep going past

>>689449120>they get more sandwiches in the cherry screensoul. you got any tips? just beat it myself but I want the cherry, feels doable. I generally hand around the bottom of the screen at the start to take out the snakes, and hug the right a little bit so I can wipe enemies before they even do anything also some idiot said you can just hold the fire button but it makes them come out way slower than if you spam
speaking of Barbuta, here's the full map with everything on it, took me ages to make so fuck it
explain combatants
>>689448957You can take your time and plan out a route. The key thing to remember is that every three enemies you kill is +1 so every explosion try and kill an enemy, try and crush an enemy every block, etc. You can also chain abilities together and you're invincible when parachuting so you can abuse the hell out of that.
>>689449467I would just say sometimes it's best to evade rather than try to kill everything even if you've just died and have powered down shurikans I wouldn't bother trying to kill stuff until it feels safe to do, I tend to hang out on the upper most platform for the whole run as dropping down when needed is quicker than going up. Make sure you go for all the balloons though, I'm not sure exactly what triggers them to appear but you get a 1up for each one so they're a must.
>>689448023Pingolf: It's a 2d golf game with the gimmick that levels have a lot of pinball pins everywhere. I kinda liked it, don't know when I would play it though.Mortol 2: This game is an awesome concept, you get 99 lives and can pick any of 5 characters with it, and you can sacrifice a character to do something specific with it like make a platform, a teleporter, or bomb something, it's so complex and unique. Probably the best game in the list so far.Fist Hell: It's every 2d beat-em-up ever. I don't really care for it at all.Overbold: Double or nothing! You are in a battle arena and have to kill enemies, you get money after every combat. Before a combat, you can buy items which make you hit harder or have more HP, and you can add more enemies to get more money, it's nice.Campanella 2: I do not like campanella. This is campanella but made into more of an exploration game, which is nice, but I'm still not too big on it.30/50

I skipped golfaria initially because people were saying it sucked day 1. golfaria is GREAT. why the lies?
Velgress cherry requirements? I want to grind it but would rather know beforehand
does Campanella do the Asteroids / Lunar Lander thing where the boost is connected to A, so you have to feather it to control it? always loved that apparently there's two other games with the same controls, guessing The Big Bell Race and maybe another Campanella I'd check myself but I want to go chronologically and keep my screen clean
>>689452115>feels very generic besides the revival mechanicDid you even get a power up
>>689452758yes
>>689450880>>689450986Hyper Contender: Simple platform fightan game. I kinda liked it and got to level 8 on my first try, even if it's kinda chaotic and the knockback feels like playing spelunky.Valbrace: Amazing game, actually, it might as well be punchout meets pathways into darkness, and I loved it, so much exploration, so much fun styling on enemies, favorite and will finish it quickly I think.Rakshasa: Indian contra, with the gimmick being that if you get hit, your soul has to play a bullet hell collect-all-items minigame to revive you. If your soul gets hit in this minigame, it's over. Also, the more you die the more enemies spawn in this minigame. I liked it, there were some cool powerups, don't know when I would play it though.Star Waspit: Just a regular space shooter with the gimmick being that if you collect powerups in a certain order, you activate a certain effect. For example, EGG is different than GEG. I wasn't very impressed with it ngl.Grimstone: It's final fantasy, complete with open world and everything, I love these sort of games but I think I am forced to save it for way later. Favorite it and come back ngl.40/50
>>689443479The trouble mechanic sucks ass, couldve won if i had those extra turnsAlmost got the 4th aliens in my party but i just ran out of space since i was focusing on population instead of cash for expanding roomAlso the guy that invites another guy can overfill your party leading to a wasted turnIts pretty insane that they cost like 40 pop an alien though

>>689453627>No, if it doesn't hold my interest in 2 minutes I close it and try something else or continue the ones I'm enjoyingThere's a power up 10 seconds into the game. They are secrets. Have you never played castlevania? Holy moly, an actual zoomer.
This is genius. When you stumble upon it randomly, your first thought will be "oh shit, why didn't I pick that one first earlier". Devilish.

>>689454464the hidden EXEC-HOVR game?
>>689440179What are the best games? Played around half of them, and most either felt like some knock-off of games that already exist, or are unneccesarily convoluted while never offering explanation as to what you're supposed to do.
>>689454209Like I said "might revisit". I'm not going to process 50 games in 2 days. What kind of secrets? Is there interesting ideas and exploratory level design like Barbuta? That's the kind of stuff that holds my attention. If I want to play Castlevania there's a dozen of them and a thousand knockoffs out there. I'm the weird autist who prefers Vampire Killer to Castlevania 1.
>>689454716depends what sort of stuff you enjoyin general, it seems like people tend to enjoy:>Valbrace>Night Manor >Velgress>Bug Hunter if you're into strategy>Golfarnia >Pingolf >Rail Heist >Mortol, Mortol II >Campanella 1 and 2 >Mooncat if you can deal with weird controls >Porgy seems to be love it or hate it >Barbuta if you're a patrician

>>689453327Lords of Diskonia: Holy crap it's marbles!!! Basically, you launch your own pins into enemies to damage them, during your turn ALL pin collisions between you and the enemy deals damage to the enemy, and vice versa during their turns. There's also a campaign/stages where you explore a map to upgrade your marble deck. It's pretty cool.Night Manor: I gotta be honest, I'm gonna give this one a pass, chief, the warning label at the start is scary and this game looks like it could be horror.Elfazar's hat: 2d top down shooter with the gimmick that cards you get can create a special powerup depending on what you collected. I wasn't very gripped honestly.Pilot Quest: An idle game? In the 1980s???? Basically the game is an idle-ish game where you wait for your hunter and moon tree to generate resources that you use to explore the wild zone(to get more materials and resources) and to build your homebase, respectively. It's alright, I don't like idling games though.Mini and Max: It's sort of a metroidvania, you can shrink yourself down to explore the shelves in your house, and if you stand on top of the shelves in bigmode, you can shrink down to them in smallmode, and it opens up some non linear exploration. I kinda like it.45/50, we're at the home stretch.

>>689453482Party house is EZ. I can cherry that and Bug Hunter in my sleep but get filtered hard by the reflex games. I guess if we were in an RPG party, reflex players would be monks and thieves, methodical Barbuta players would be fighters, and thinky game players would be mages.

>>689455732Combat ants: I think I don't understand the game or something, cuz I don't know how to do anything other than control my own character and get others to follow SOMETIMES.Quibble race: It's a snail racing betting game where you can spray salt on the other contestants for a chance to ruin them. I can understand the concept, but I dont want to play it ever honestly.Seaside drive: It's heavy weapon deluxe by popcap games, holy crap. Anyway, it's pretty simplistic and I wasn't very thrilled with it, but it's cool I guess.Campanella 3: Oh boy another campanella game, I sure am excited for- wait, this one DOESNT have helicopter controls, it's practically space harrier, it's pretty good. I'm into it, I can play it.Cyber Owls: Probably the best game to cap the whole thing off. It's 4 games in one, one is metal gear MSX, one is a generic beat em up, one is an almost-rail shooter(dont know how to describe it), and one is a motorcycle chase shooter. It's very varied and each of the parts is good, it's pretty high quality ngl. Good game for sure.50/50

>>689457707>But I still don't see what's not generic about the non-dead gameplay. The wide variety of monsters and effects presented in an oppressive density that would not be present in any castlevania or it's clones. Gentlemen, I bring you a coffee map for the UFOsoft CLASSIC Campanella. Now you don't have to spend 16 lives finding it in C-7.(enter the flower square to spawn the coffee; the warps skip you ahead three levels but are only there the first 10 seconds of the level. They're also invisible which is why I didn't show them after stage A)It's fun. The game's really pure. You get good at moving around, and that's it, you can beat it.My high score's 65400, see if you can beat it.
>>689466592oh, damn. in that case it's worth breaking the spikey balls when you can, easy points when there's a bit of down-time I was thinking that collecting the balloons for score was worthless and that score was there for the fuck of it like a lot of old retro games, so that's a nice touch

YES AUSTIN HAS CLEANED UP AGAIN AND ACTUALLY HAS GOTTEN TO A NEW STEP OF THIS DURING THEIR CURATED MUSEUM WALKTHROUGH WE ARE NOT MAKING THIS UP YES YET AGAIN AUSTIN HAS VIEWED THEMSELVES NOT ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING AND BY ACCEPTING TO DO SO HAS CLEANED UP SO MANY ACTUAL STUFF OF THAT WE ARE NOT MAKING THAT UP YES GRATULATIONS AUSTIN YOU ARE NOW PROCEED IN THE CURATED WALKTHROUGH OF THE MUSEUM EVENT AND YES MUSEUM IS ACTUALLY A VIDEO GAME AND VIDEOGAME GENRE THANK YOU AUSTIN FOR CLEANING UP AGAIN THAT DID NOT THINK YOU KNEW HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE THROUGH ANY OF THAT
>>689466886Yeah, that one little mechanic gives the game so much extra depth, it's really smart, especially since you still need to shoot the life balloon so it'll be easier or harder depending on when you spawn them (and you can choose when considering you ONLY gain score from pickups). Makes the sandwich drops worth the risk too for the big 500. It's really shot Ninpek up my ranking.

Valbrace is fucking great because it combines the fun exploration of old-school dungeon crawlers with the dynamic combat of something like Punch-Out instead of relying on turn-based combat. This is a great formula, and I'm surprised that no one tried this before. I want a larger game in this style.

>>689460446I don't know how half the puzzle games work
>>689476389I don't think the games look bad so to speak but the human character designs for many of the games are the biggest tell that these are modern games to the unaware observer. A good chunk of them look too closely to Spelunky's characters, most notably with the "main" guy in Bushido Ball.
>>689476690I think it's fine being that's it's an entirely seperate console that could have existed during the period.
>>689477861I could see it being a "house style" or a specific sprite artist I suppose, and there's enough variety in what you even play as that it's not always in your face.

>>689482751how do you start the game optimally?
who /cherrymaxxing/ here?
Is there anywhere to check how long each game is, in terms of levels/stages? Just want to gauge how deep I've been getting, like how I've reached A-8 in Campanella twice now in like 20 minutes playing.
>>689483351I went all offense, they can't hit you if they die in one turn after all. Never bought or used a shield. So for the start, I think that's 6 sticks. Then it's a matter of knowing the enemy's elemental weakness. You get useful items as you go, but for the final boss I had 5 tridents and a potion.Took 7 hours, but a ton of that is just exploration moreso than combat.
>>689484158Campanella has 5 worlds with 10 stages each. They seem to like to make the number of stages 5, 25 or 50 (with some exceptions). Generally, if a game doesn't save your progress, you can usually beat it in 15 minutes.
So, has anyone been trying to figure out the major influences for each game?Like, Barbuta reminds me of Castle of Druaga mixed with this one other NES side scroller whose name I'm forgetting.Mortol feels very lemmings influenced (probably my favorite game so far.)Velgress reminds me of this one old computer game, sort of like Mighty Bomb Jack. I can't remember. It's been a lot of fun trying to pick out the influences here.
Should I cherry each game before moving on? Keep in mind I'm very bad at video games and I've been stuck on Night Manor and Party House for 3 days. Also since this collection is at the zenith of its popularity right now I might as well ask how to get farther
>>689486094Grimstone feels like Final Fantasy x Shadow Hearts x Wild Arms
>>689486247>Should I cherry each game before moving on?No, because there are games that are legitimately bad and you'll end up getting burned if you force yourself to play them instead of trying the good ones.

>>689440179Does this game work on steam deck?
>>689486094Velgress is basically just Kid Icarus filtered through Ojiro's design philosophy. Downwell & Poinpy are better but those are standalone games so that's understandable.
>>689486094I'd love if a retro chad did a chart with all the obvious retro inspirations that made these games. I think aside from Bug Hunter, every game I've played so far must have had at least some.As for Barbuta, it feels so much like a C64 game to me.
I think there would have been potential here for there to be "secret games" that can be unlocked through special means and even a secret creepypasta game.

>>689496878Ok it's understandable considering Pilot Quest.

Found out a secret way of getting the rod early in Barbuta, which is niceStill missing an item, though, I know exactly what it does, too. I just need to find it somewhere.
>>689441132I've finished Mooncat twice, I got the same ending both times, and the game still tells me I haven't seen HALF of the levels in Mooncat. Really great though.
>>689494549I love Kid Icarus but I can't figure out Velgress at all. I just fucking die almost instantly. I feel like my reflexes would have to be twice what they are.

How do Anons have the attention span to play Barbuta in the year 2024?
I did it!It only took me 3 days but I finally beat Barbuta without looking anything up! I probably would've beaten it in a day if I had figured out the fake acid pit earlier. What's surprising is that I didn't even need to explore the entire map in order to beat it. Am I missing out on something important or is that good enough?
>>689498182Because I already love shit like La Mulana.
>>689497865Holy shit, I did it. I prayed at the altar like the slime told me to.But what the fuck, I thought for sure the last item I was missing was gonna be some sort of iron boots to break the ice blocks. Also, I just now realized that you are meant to use the rod with the lever.BRAVO, THORSON
But where's the Mario game?
>>689498416I never could pull the lever myself, if you're supposed to hit it at the exact moment then that requires some pixel perfect precision. Fuck that noise.
Haha, it's probably weird but does anyone else think thay Eagle is kind of hot. Haha. Just joking.
>>689498416>I just now realized that you are meant to use the rod with the lever. Is that actually possible to do? Theres actually another easier way to hit the lever, but finding it is one of two BS things in the game.1. To get to the boss you walk over the spikes to get to the ladder.2. In the purple room on the right side with the two ladders and 1 green titan there is an invisible ladder up on one space that lets to go up, then back down to the right and wrap around to the switch on the left side.
>>689498125You want to actually slow down slightly since the floor only comes up when you move. Also, get past the first level and buy the upgrade that slows the floor breakdown speed. It significantly slows the gameplay down.I personally don't like the random generation in it, but it's kind of the name of the game for this type of arcade game.
>>689498547>>689498654Yeah, nevermind, it's not possible. Or at least not after you break the first ledge (Which doesn't come back)I'm not clicking that spoiler. The ledge continues to confound me.Actually, spoileranon, can you just tell me if it has to do with the umbrella?
>>689496524didn't use the hammer except for a special one you can find.evil potion lowers max HP of the person holding it, but works better than other potions.I used a bomb on the midboss in combat. They have a use out of combat as well.
my brain isn't working, how I'm I supposed to clear these to leave room for the star?
>>689498783Are you asking how to hit the lever? It is pure luck and could take hours from what I can tell. I couldnt find a hint in game for it. Read spoiler #2 if you want to know. Nothing to do with the umbrella which protects you from acid drips.
>>689499108nevermind, I got it.man this stuff is painful.

>>689469102It's amazing how good Mooncat is with effectively just a left and a right button.

>>689506189hyper contender is so fucking awful holy shit. frame 1 invincible lunging melee attacks, some of which have incredibly low endlag. the game would've been far better if they removed them entirely, and made it less likely for rings to bounce towards your opponent's side when you hit them, AND made the stun after getting hit be longer than half a second so that you actually are rewarded for hitting the enemy with some rate of consistency... so basically if everything was done different the game might be fun for a short while. they didnt even bother programming the gravity flip guy cpu.
So how are the sales? I was expecting this to blow up bigger
Why didn't the Mortolians just fly the plane to the center?
>>689507124What did you want to (You) me with, bro?>>689507198Seem pretty lackluster, which is a shame. I like the concept of Porgy but it sucks.. the shooting is awful, and it's tedious as fuck how there's a very slim chance you can recover fuel or whatever and it's just fucked.
>>689507483I've played all the games for at least half an hour, Porgy is like the 3rd worst
>>689507317Probably. Similar design spirit. It plays faster and is more polished, more satisfying platforming. But the biggest difference is LM's scale is much bigger, it's one big metroidvania map with many interconnected levels, and it's more focused on puzzle riddles, and some are extremely obtuse and require you to pay attention to every tiny detail and try every possible interaction.

I don't want to go around not being able to kill anything.
Holy fuck Rakshasa is brutal. Got to the second stage boss and I really dislike that if you at any point lose your power up anywhere further in the run, you might as well reset, which really goes against the whole idea of reviving on the spot
>>689511479The fun is in everyone jumping in on the first week playing different games while there's no walkthrough online yet, and hearing vague tips about games you haven't even played yet. By the time it comes out on switch, it'll all be on youtube and wikis.

does every game in this have permadeath? outside of maybe Grimstone only a few games in so far but I 'luv me permadeath, simple as
>>689512663You mean lives and game overs? At least at the start, most games do. The second one seems like it can let you continue, but it's a roguelite type deal and you have to start from the beginning if you die. I found two that have save based progression so far, so you don't need to restart from the very beginning every time.

I've been playing magic garden all day and I can't even crack 100. I know the strategy, you get 6 at a time, stack up on potions then use 3 at once for score, but it's so hard dodging everything.

I can't even get past job 2. gimme your tips >>689512930in-case you're somehow blind and retarded, you can see which way the blue blobs will move based on the way they look
>>689512930If you want gold and aren't worried about getting the cherry highscore, then it's even easier to just not stack shit and always go for potions. Sometimes you'll want to wait for them to turn blue or gold so that they kill mushrooms, but aside from that just grab potions and wreck shit. The potions both make the enemies killable and also prevent any new ones from spawning, so with some practice it's not too difficult to have it so that the board stays nearly empty a lot of the time and you don't have a lot of shit to dodge. Horrible strategy for getting high scores, but it lets you see the ending.I fucking hate Magic Garden. Least favorite game from the first row.
>>689512930are you going for gold? then get 2 gold potions to start wtih (so that 4 pinks are always spawning), then when you pick up potions from that point on, ignore blues and just pick up the pinks to essentially go infinite. getting a few golds at the start to up your max pink count is crucial. as for 20k points, yeah it takes skill, luck and good peripheral vision.
>>689513092>>689513091we're like brothers...
I didn't realize this until a while in, but if you hang on some of the menu screens for games it'll give you a few tips, or at the very least a demo of it being playedMagic Garden gives you a load of hints with text and everything, whereas Ninpek just shows someone playing kind of poorly

>>689515413There is a new game from the spelunky devs called UFO 50 that contains 50 games in the style of SNES games. Some of the games are trivial silly stuff, some of the games are la mulana, castlevania, or into the breach.

Despite the color limitations going by NES standards, yeah, the games do look SNESish in terms of spritework and animations. It's meant to be NES, though, the company ends before the SNES is even a thing.

>>689517092I'll give you a small hint to get those 5 extra lives.Besides the stone ritual, there is something else you can use to press buttons. Also, every 3 kills you get an extra life so make sure every time you use a ritual you kill at the very least 1 enemy.
>>689515823A lot of them are more Amiga or other PCs of that era. Particularly because they're supposed to be a UK company.
the fuck game is this? saw it in the demo reel thing, had some pink blob jumping about would be nice if it showed the names when the demos play
>>689517126Damn it. I'm never gonna get that.
I only recently found out the ammo boxes in Mortol 2 are permanent, you can use them over and over, even in the same character, that's actually really great, you can put down an ammo box somewhere accessible and then keep going back to it.
