You know the drill. 999 reviews or lower. 250 is the sweet spot. 100 reviews and upto the single digits is the real freak shit.

Let's add this too for recent releases:

Valve is filled with lazy do nothings that refuse to manually do anything
>Greenlight is being botted
Moderate it? No just remove it
>Now the front page is filled with garbage
Just hide every game by default until a game has enough wishlists or reviews
>Now slop devs are botting their wishlists and reviews
Just stop taking wishlists into account entirely and make it so reviews from game keys don't count
Completely fucked the market so now only streamerbait gets any traction but atleast valve, the multibillion dollar company, didn't have to do any actual work.

The original? probably not because it's niche and there's dozens of games that have more accessible gameplay and a cool aesthetic i just one release month on Steam.

The floodgates are open and decent games are a dime-a-dozen now. You pretty much need that special sauce or a strong impact to break water and be noticed.

I know people have their issues with this, but I'd rather take the ocean we have now rather than the ultra curated pond we had where you needed a publisher or connections to put your game in a store.

Stuff still floats to the top, and the fact we have hidden gems makes this feel closer to gaming in the 90s, where cult games would get propped up by word-of-mouth.
>>
>>724465473
No shit?

Fucking Braid would have been a complete flop lmao
>>
>>724465734
>where cult games would get propped up by word-of-mouth
Word of mouth doesn't exist anymore, retard. The modern algorithmic-based web has completely killed word of mouth, and places like 4chan and reddit being so hostile to devs to the point that a dev can't even make people aware that his game exists. It's over.
>>
>>724465717
Looks very nice, anon. I might buy it later on this week because I loved Daggerfall and have the Wayward Realms on my wishlist. If there were one game with less than 400 reviews I'd recommend it's this one
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1082970/Archaelund/
It's basically Baldur's Gate 3 and The Elder Scrolls Morrowind's baby. We're in a really blessed time for indie games.

Word of mouth was how I found Mecha Knight Nightmares from a discord and how I've found dozens of cool indie games from these Steam recommend threads and the assorted subreddits. It fully exists and anyone that's too thin-skinned to take the "le shill/le woke" hostility on 4chan was ngmi in the indie sphere anyways. Algos only control most of the normie internet and faggy social media sites, they don't control discussions in niche communities.
>>

>The original? probably not because it's niche and there's dozens of games that have more accessible gameplay and a cool aesthetic i just one release month on Steam.
No, the reboot from 2012. The one that was a massive hit and pretty much revived squad based tactics, making it accessible to even normies.

>Word of mouth was how I found Mecha Knight Nightmares from a discord and how I've found dozens of cool indie games from these Steam recommend threads and the assorted subreddits. It fully exists
And how do you think people in that discord or these threads found these games? Because they saw a stream/youtube video of it, even if it's a small one. Do you honestly think a game can become popular these days without a significant pre-launch marketing campaign? No, they don't. Nobody sifts through games with less than 10 reviews on Steam.

I am not the kind of poster who calls everyone and everything a shill or shilled product, but isn't extremely suspicious that a game that got 123 Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam in the last month has ZERO people playing it right now according to SteamDB?

>>
>>724470143
This isn't true. Steam promotes publishers on the storefront if they are having a sale.
>>
>>724470304
Next Fest isn't a guaranteed win button. Even if you have a fair bit of wishlists and followers, if you don't get enough sales fast enough, your game is pretty much dead in the water. Any game that doesn't get more than 500 reviews in at least a week is fucked. There is a term called "wishlist decay", if you don't understand I can elaborate. And if you have a game on your wishlist that isn't out, you won't get notified of its release.

I ran out of character space.
I would like to take this moment to point out that one game on this list, Head AS Code, is part of a plot-focused mystery trilogy and the final entry in the series, Decide 4 God, came out a couple weeks ago after 4 years of development. This is the only thing similar to Zero Escape since ZE, which was a gigantic letdown. If you enjoy the niche-within-a-niche mystery VN genre and you were ever going to check out a visual novel or novels, this is the series. Both HASC and its sister game, Birth ME Code, can be played in any order before D4G.

Steam still needs better discoveribility. Yeah it has tags but that is nowhere near enough. For example i dont wanna see those random asset flip porn games, ok great so filter nsfw or sexual content but that also filters actual games that happen to have sexual content. I dont like horror games where all you do is walk around and hide from stuff. But i do like other horror games and some walking sims. As of now the filtering is way too strict and not flexible enough.

What if Katamari was a platformer? A cool navigational, 'platformer', with lots of exploration, secrets, and problems to solve as you try to progress.

Seconding Dragonloop-chan. Pretty neat and cheap as fuck metroidvania with a timeloop gimmick where you start at the same spot every loop but have to explore further within the same time frame (1 week). It's not a mindblowing execution of the concept, but cool enough spin on the standard metroidvania formula.

This one is a recc from one of these threads. Didn't play much as I found out I don't like RPG roguelites, but if you like build crafting, that's definitely something to keep on your radar.

Neat JRPG inspired game in which you can swap your off-team members during battle, like Labyrinth of Touhou 2. An all-around solid game with good balance, but it's not without its fair share of flaws related to story and pacing and the bosses are a bit on the easy side, but definitely not braindead tier easy.

I'm surprised I hadn't heard about this. I can't remember what manga it was, but I read something within the last few years where one of the characters really loved the book or the author. I saw it was one of the only books of his that'd been translated, but I've not gotten around to reading it yet. and now it's bugging me that I can't remember what manga it was. I know it had a family driving out to the countryside as the start, but that doesn't really narrow it down.

Oh forgot to mention, but Quartet actually uses proper instruments for its music rather than chiptune, which I wasn't expecting. Granted the OST is mediocre for the most part, with just 3 tracks that caught my attention.

I tried playing this one, but it felt painfully generic, like Crypt Custodian but not nearly as smooth of a gameplay.

It's a game made for Halloween, which is basically tomorrow. Charming as fuck too.

I feel like the biggest surprise hit with /v/ was kats trigger. it's pure distilled edgekino with really solid 2d combat with a fluid grappling hook for flying around and yanking enemies towards you.
the big surprise for me personally was psycho sleuth. I saw a few other anons talking about it, but not as much as I expected. I hadn't heard about it before the fest, and it blew me away. extremely solid murder mystery vn that's overtly a game of werewolf, with a neat twist. extra surprised /v/ didn't latch onto it because the mc's sister is a huge brocon
