Watcha working on /v/?
putting this out there, many of the games officially sold for the playdate are really not that great. Although no one is making the big bucks from playdate games, the market isn't saturated so if your game is half decent you will actually have people see and buy your game. The catch is the average game price is around 5 bucks
Thinking about those saving systems.I have a bunch of unique interactions and the game should remember all of that between scenes. Now I have to write something convoluted that remembers if things were interacted with successfully or not, keep an end state for a bunch of items and remember to rewrite everything to not repeat anything that was already done.Too much for a shitpost
working on my own renderer, calling it a game engine would imply some degree of low/nocode capability I think, so renderer is probably a better name
>>725584747still reworking the enemy AI, which is almost done and sooner than expected. Enemies that have shields work better now, and I've been able to fix a few bugs that were present on the old enemies
fixing bugs that came to light post-demoday mostly. i also saw in gameplay that some players don't intuitively understand momentum so now i'm experimenting with changing color based on speed so i can tutorialize my mechanics better>>725586041lookin good. like how that goblin knocked into the other goblin
>>725586749>changing color based on speeddamn that's a neat idea! should make it way easier>like how that goblin knocked into the other goblinthanks! but fuck I'm so sick of my goblins, hopefully I can upload gameplay webms with new monsters soon

Anyway, thanks for the kind workds anon>Anything in the works beyond goblins though?Yeah! Got a harpy (picrel) as the first flying enemy. I have nothing to show for it yet, but I just wanted to announce that I am making a 3D multiplayer game using only C and Vulkan.Thank you for your attention to this matter. I will see you in 10 years when the game is ready in it's alpha state.
>>725588189>is that pic a drawing of yours or something?Nah, just something from one of my artists. It is for the project, but "hey look, some paragraphs" isn't the best visuals.I'm looking forward to seeing that Harpy, once it's ready. Is the plan for them to really fly or are they just going to be 'offset from the ground', as it were?>>725588453Ah I only say that because it looks a little more 'mid game'. If you've played Mario 64, you can sorta tell how dangerous an area is by the number of safe spaces to stand. Bob-Bomb battlefield doesn't have any falls that kill you in one hit, for example. Lethal Lavaland is 50% fire that hurts you, and Tick Tock Clock is all platforming and narrow walkways.>>725588623Killer textures. What kinda game?
>>725589598
>game dev 3 threads ago>28 posts>3 days later >another one>2 days later another oneYup, it's no dev time!
>>725590531>Nah, just something from one of my artists. It is for the project, but "hey look, some paragraphs" isn't the best visuals.Oh nice, then the game will have some nicely drawn anime art for sure. Congrats on having a nice artist!>Is the plan for them to really fly or are they just going to be 'offset from the ground', as it were? They fly for real! They do it in a basic way, and would love to expand it with actual 3D A* pathfinding. But for now, the current logic is fine
>>725588456Sometimes I wish I could when certain things are difficult. But then I manage to power through. It'd be fun working with someone but making my own singular vision is also fun. My most recent "I wish someone else would do this part" had to do with writing, I had some ideas of events I want to occur but linking them up had its difficulties. Putting pen to paper (metaphorically) is difficult for me. But then there was a breakthrough; what if character x was related to character y? It solved the problems and added a new element to character x that made complete sense and rounded out who they were. I'm happy with where it ended up. If someone else wrote their own solution, would I have been content with it?
>>725590531i will take your word for it. i am unable to see how hard it looks since i've been developing/playing it a while.

I'm testing combat with stamina recovery down to half the usual rate, but restoring a very little bit of stamina each time you hit an enemy. Thoughts? My idea is to encourage attacking instead of running away and waiting or just using stamina recovery items
>>725593749sounds like a good idea to me
>>725586041This game is going to be so fucking good.

I'm very happy with that stuff
Happy Veterans Day, gang. Make sure to take some time to remember and salute the members of the armed forces for sacrificing their lives to defend the weak. Now that our men and women have been shown the proper respect they deserve for defending the free nation, it is time to continue our regularly scheduled posting. Here's something neat: certain Gremlings now grow a pair of testicles and will actually attack the player. At the moment I am thinking of just having only Gremling Majors (Pot Gremlings with completely fireproof armor that throw their spears at you instead of to the side) turn into these devious monsters, but I began to think: what if, by some minuscule chance, regular Pot Gremlings do the same as well?
>>725594564no one likes you faggot

You have that big, almost empty square at the right corner that says "Shop" and has 3 icons. Couldn't you fit her there? Maybe turn that into her actual shop, kinda like pic-rel>>725594847very true. >>725596362My 2 plans1. I have this concept of "ephemeral realms" where a random or scheduled server instance spins up, and is shown in the public server listing for a time period. It might be a dungeon for raiding, or a full map where some players might log in to do anything else like PvP or grind skills during that window of the realm being up. This would all level your yggengine.com "persona" which will be a global character of sorts2. Its your forum avatar, and interacting on the forum will also yield some xp to the personaOther than that individual server spawns people have, people will have their individual character stats for those. The idea will be we will have cosmetics recognized between servers.

(ignore the ugly programmer art)Is it a bad idea to use the same sprite for the gameplay (left) and cutscenes? I've been thinking about having a second sprite, maybe one that looks kinda chibi, for the cutscenes, but I'm not sure.
Did some UI stuff today, drawing icons on the screen boundary if the marker is off-screen. Good reminder how much my skill as a dev is utterly blown the fuck out by the fact I never drilled linear algebra to the point it was intuitive. Fuck me, it's not even complicated linear algebra.

>>725604169The irony of your statement is that the first ever "merch" I ever made was a 3D printed model of the Lieutenant from Impulsehazard almost a decade ago when I was still a kid. Turns out Windows 10 had a service where you could buy 3D printed models you design on the computer so I had this abomination turned into a cool statue; the first time it arrived, the arms were broken off the pauldrons so I requested a replacement; the same thing happened the second time so I decided not to ask again because it just meant my model was shit (thank God for Krazy glue, though). >>725606623Congrats
it do be like that
>>725606496>Bullets are objects so they can go through portalsWhile that's very cool I noticed that in your previous webm you barely hit anyone until you land and the enemies start pilling up together. Anon I've been seeing your game for a while and it looks super cool, but lots of 3d movement + slow bullets is a recipe for frustration since you are bound to miss most shoots and the power fantasy gets lost. Even Descent had the courtesy of having one hitscan weapon and that game wasn't as fast as yours. I'd say at least give hitscan a go as a test. You could still try and replicate the portal stuff with hitscans, maybe not painting the bullets on screen, but their traces? Oh and sorry for the long rambling, I love this game design shit.
>>725606770oh and maybe just making the current bullets way, way faster might be enough
>>725605480>>725603586Although I did just realize, there's no reason to constrain the icon to within the dialog box. If I make them bigger, I can get more detailed, and show some goofy faces.
When the time comes that my game is finished, I'm merchandising the hell out of The Frydarian Tale (it's why I created all of the strange character designs, after all). You'll have merch like:>The subtle Emblem of the Fygoon Clan t-shirt>The not-so-subtle Joseph Fygoon with The Frydarian Tale logo t-shirt>The Frydarian Sticker Sheets>The Frydarian Plush Toys (featuring Joseph Fygoon, Alois Ratatosky, Balthazar Lux, Viceroy Canor, Vicereine Iris, and the Warlord)>The Frydarian Socks (featuring Alois Ratatosky)>The Frydarian Grill Lighter (Squeeze a miniature Joseph Fygoon to light up your barbecue)>A coffee book version of The Zmeian Compendium>The Frydarian Butt-Scratcher (modeled after Balthazar Lux's clawed paw)>The Frydarian Humidifier (Fygoon expels a red-light stream of "fire" to make your room less dry and stop bloody noses)>The Frydarian Night Light (it's a small tap light that projects stars and the Great Moon based on Frydarian celestial maps with a dim blue light)>The Frydarian Action Figures (featuring all of your favorite little bastards)>The Frydarian LEGO set (I used to love LEGOs when I was little so this is something I'd love to do, even if it's realistically a pipe dream)

>>725616290I generally fucking hate dash moves, but you made it novel by integrating it into the Paloo's gun. Great job
>>725615996You would probably get more interest in the h-threads that show up sometimes, but it's not really hard to make those sorts of games if you don't find anyone. I think the most popular one is still twine, but there might be better (and easier) options by now
>DeletedFuck off, jannies.Re:All I can do is write and draw art.So theoretically, if I finished writing out the basics of my CoC rip-off but it's actually TiTs but more like CoC writing fest I'm powering through, would any cunt mind terribly making the text engine interactive thing that powers it into an actual game if I incorporate their fetish?Your fetish will need to be one of my fetishes.>>725617110Yeah I tried fucking with twine and sugarcube as that was used for the basis of things like Free Cities and DoL but any sort of code entirely fucks with my brain. Unless it's drag and drop like Scratch I can't do it.
>>725600454You won't because it doesn't happen anymore. Valve changed the algorithm in 2019 and now every new release flops unless you quite literally sell a hundred thousand copies in its first week, only then do you get any kind of promotion by Steam.Unless you already have an established audience by the time you start, like a Youtube channel or a discord server that's filled with retards who'll buy your game on first notice, AND have connections to streamers and youtubers day one to shill your game on release (which you are not, let's be real), you're shit out of luck.>But muh nextfest! It only helps a little. It may get some eyes on your game but it's not a guaranteed success. It's all fucked.Oh, and to top it all off - the average retarded steamie considers a game that sold 200 THOUSAND copies and made 3 million dollars in revenue an "obscure hidden gem". So there's also that working against you.
>>725584747where is nortubel?
>>725618092Yeah, I get what you're saying. I remember hearing about twine/sugarcube being a huge pain in the butt to deal with to the point that people said to not even bother, but I'm not really sure if they found something better to use. Maybe Ren'py? Not sure when you tried out doing it yourself, but the way AI is now you can get away with a lot with it helping you out, though it'd have to be a final resort since it still requires fiddling around with it, and you'd have to do research into what's better to use than twine. I do think that you'll be able to find someone though, your chances go up exponentially if you provide proof that you've been working on it and essentially have proof-of-concept. Make mock-ups and stuff like that while you work on it to share around when you look for a coder. Really, the hardest thing will be getting them to stay, people are really flaky.
>>725618882Aye that's the plan beyond putting out feelers as I work on it. Finish up the main story beats for future fleshing out, do the art, storyboard the layout, and shoot into these threads or ones like them.
>>725606102>>725586041>>725616290All of these present a severe problem where the Streamer can first-try everything without dying and it makes (You) look bad. 1 to 2 hours means they will never reach the challenging parts before time's up.
>>725618960Sounds like a plan to me, hopefully you'll be able to find someone and you'll be able to share progress here. The last guy who was making something similar vanished, so I'm hoping you'll be successful. Ganbatte
>>725599675>These guys spent FIVE YEARS working on this game and nobody bought it. Because for the same price you can get Rabbit&Steel, which has cute bunny girls with a cannon fetish for non-consensual impregnation. They picked the wrong fight 5 years ago.
>>725586041This looks so fucking good, Anon. If I had to pick one thing about it to critique I'd say the screen shake? The fact that it has screen shake is great, because no one ever remembers that, but there's something about it that seems off? Kind of too smooth or something, it might be too fast? Someone else will definitely phrase it better than me, but it makes me worry that if I played the game for more than 20 minutes the screen shake might make me feel nauseous.
>>725606623>>content warning: this game discusses issues that a transgender woman in japan might face, which is a topic that can be sensitive and personal.

>>725607510>>Turns out they share major design element with another characterGo the FFTA2 way, and push it further to share element with every single fucking character in existence.
>>725618092There are a bunch of text adventure engines with different approaches, limits, and scripting capabilities. If declaring twine variables is too much "code" for you then you won't find anything easier. You will have to properly team up with a programmer-designer fellow, because the real pain starts when managing variant dialogue and ensuring coherent order of progression. CoC relies a fuckton of text substitutions, which is plain if/then/else logic, but anything bigger than a 20 minute CYOA (much less an "actual game") will quickly spaghetti out of control.
>>725584747A story adventure game. It's basically a visual novel with extra steps, like Night in the Woods or Oneshot. It's coming along well, currently burning the midnight oil.
