i find it weird when people champion undertale/deltarune as the ultimate examples of sincerity in gaming, knowing the origins of toby's sense of humorspecially when sites like tumblr always had irony posion and even people being cynical towards animesomething tells me there could be a chance of deltarune having a cameo of dril or mega64the real "tumblrisms" of ut/dr aren't the furry characters or the lgbt elements, more likely they're the type of humor when you consider the roots(i'd also bring up the differences between "tumblr cringe" and "deviantart cringe" where tumblr always had overt self-awareness, self-deprecating humor and even some cultural overlaps with somethingawful while deviantart feels alien in comparison because it's weird kids not even thinking about how the outside world sees them)(could also be because tumblr is full of millenials who also invest in politics to feel more mature than they are)it feels like people nowadays (and maybe as a side effect of "internet brain rot" or troll's remorse) define sincerity as "anti-cringe culture", as if simply including colorfull furry characters makes your work sincereso by this logic: david lynch's art for example can't be sincere because it doesn't have colorfull furries or poorly drawn anime charactersbut i also believe toby himself might be aware of this, which explains why he'd ever want to go to japan because barely does irony exist in anything from japanmaybe he even sees pieces of irony and the likes on his western fansbut he probably doesn't entirely regret his history with tumblr if it got him into things he did like

the modern web culture, and by extension irl culture since the two are connected now, have completely devolved into compartmentalized thinking and people cannot see any nuance in anything, they NEED to attach it to a "side" and put it in their pocket as belonging to that side, this is a learned social survival mechanism in a world where everyone must form an opinion about something immediately without time to think lest they form the wrong one and be shunned, so they do it quickly and then abide by it foreversee example number 1, this tourist: >>725588742

>>725588220I don't think it's the most sincere game (series) out there but it definitely is sincere. There's a lot of care and attention to detail taken to the point where it's obvious the amount of passion that went into the game, irrespective of whether you find it funny or not.I don't think it having tumblr roots makes it any less sincere. I'm not arguing it isn't tumblr-like, because it is, but that doesn't really have anything to do with sincerity. It's more to do with dedication and passion than anything else, what you might call "soul" which is just subtle evidence that humans made it and put their creative effort into it.I do think there's too much of an emphasis on "cringe" in recent years. A lot of zoomers (or just irony poisoned people in general) are DEATHLY afraid of being considered "cringe." As a result their opinions basically just become whatever they think others perceive as "based and redpilled" so people are scared to like anything not in that category. They also project this onto other people and get unusually obsessed over certain content just because they perceive it as "cringe." They don't really put any thought into it, it's just parroting what the popular opinion of their environment is.

>>725588220It's sincere because Toby isn't worried about cliches, tropes, shit like that. 99% of fiction in the 2020s spends it's entire runtime trying to be unique. Toby just tells a good story instead. He's not worried about someone calling his characters overdone, or played out, or unoroginal. Sincerity.

I don't think it's the colorful furries that make Undertale and Deltarune sincere, it's that the games have a theme that they say wholeheartedly without reservation and those themes are very optimistic to the point where you might even call them a little naive.I do think using certain things as shorthand for representing a counter-cultural movement is an interesting discussion in games nowadays though. The one that'll always stick out to me in that regard is Sunset Overdrive which marketed itself in this very chest-puffy way as fun, colorful rebellion against dark modern shooters and took plenty of potshots at the oversaturation of the shooters of the 7th gen, which was pretty ironic, considering 1) This was Insomniac, who had made Resistance, a trilogy of dark modern 7th gen shooters and Fuse, a game that had been initially promoted as fun and full of character and energy and color, but had gotten focus grouped down to nothing. It felt kinda hypocritical coming from them. And 2) Sunset Overdrive was, I dunno. It was just another shooter? It just came and went without making any impression. And that was a thing for a while, "our shooter has COLOR and CHARACTER in it, not like those other grey and brown shooters!" and while it's not like there weren't any good games that fit this description, now it's kind of in the opposite direction where we're so over saturated with colorful snarky hero shooters, it's become pretty passé. And that's led to the current moment where I think people are hungry not for color and whimsy, but sincerity. And I do think there is something to the idea of using colorful furry characters as shorthand for "this game doesn't care if you think it's cringe, it's just going to sincerely tell its story". That was the first thing I thought of when I saw a trailer for that Volcano High game a while ago - all of these colorful dino characters are shorthand. I kinda think Undertale might've inspired that trend.
