Let's settle this ONCE AND FOR ALL, /v/
Are visual novels video games or not?
>>
Do visual novels play in my bluray pr dvd player? No? Only on console and pc? Then it's a game.

>He doesnt remember choose your own adventure dvds
>>
Not all of them, but they can be.
>>

I've only seen those in book form. Dvd had a lot of ambitious ideas that never became mainstream. If you look at old remotes they have an "angle" button because they thought people would be able to view movies from multiple angles .

does it contain any interaction beyond clicking choices? no? not a game

does it contain any interaction beyond clicking choices? yes? does it allow you to play one or multiple characters from the visual novel? yes? it's a video game
>>
while I'd say a bog standard visual novel isn't truly a game, they fit better with games than books so they're honorary games
>>
>>725787242
Yes
>>
Unless you want to start creating several different categories for "computer interactive entertainment products", then it's best to continue calling everything video games, including Visual Novels.

How would YOU fix the "progression" of standard VNs? especially fucking porn VNs? My biggest gripe about VNs is that they follow THE SAME FUCKING SYSTEM every damn time.
>Protag starts story
>Protag meets x amount of characters they can romance/fuck/both
This next part is the problem:
>Protag does boring ass minigames or just talks to NPCs to raise (INTELLIGENCE) (STRENGTH) (CHARM) (WHATEVER OTHER STAT THEY USE)
>To progress to the next scenes you need to have x amount of a stat to see the next scene with a character.

How can the fuck can this system be made to be more interesting? You NEED some way to unlock the next scenes, sure, but it always boils down to the same shitty system in every VN. What the fuck can be done to fix it

No they're virtual books.
>>
A game has a UI, an event system that reacts to input and renders graphics to a screen depending on game state.

Doodle jump is a game. So visual novels too are a game. The gameplay is pressing stuff. The most basic thing.

Terminal text adventures are also vide games and they are even less of multi facetted art-form / kind of game.

What the fuck are you talking about? What are you even reading where this is a thing, the vast majority of nukige/moege just have dialogue choices or a basic affection system for routes.
>>
>>725787242
if there is a big enough game component sure. 13 sentinels has a tower defense mode on top of the reading sections. Straight linear stories like DDLC aren't really games and games like Phoenix Wright only slightly pass the test by being vaguely adventure games.

Yes, Visual Novels are a branch of original text adventures. The other branch is "pint'nclick' adventures, which for a long time weren't point-and-click, but were more about you typing things on the keyboard like the old text games.
Some adventures are so simple and easy, like Full Throttle, for example, that it's basically a Western "visual novel".
I don't see anyone trying to question whether adventures are video games, though.
>>
Walking simulators with cutscene slideshows are games too. This discussion is over once you understand that.

That anon is literally not wrong. Look at all the Persona games after 2. Outside of the dungeons it's nothing more than a glorified visual novel with shitty minigames that you use to raise social stats.

Those stats let you advance visual novel stories by gatekeeping them behind thresholds of said stats
>>
As far as 4chan has been concerned they've always been videogames. Deep cut history, visual novels were banned from pre-/jp/ /a/ and you were expected to make threads about them in /v/.
>>
>>725787242
some have vidya elements, but most are no different from choose your own adventure books
>>
>>725787701
I think only porn DVDs used the angle thing lmao

>Look at all the *non-VNs*

If visual novels are not video games, where do you draw the line between the two?

Let's split the difference between books and video games and call it all art!
