I know Gabes kid is a racecar driver. I hope Gabe is teaching him well about Valve and what it means to him. We need someone with the same views as Gabe in charge. I really don't think people realize just how great Steam is right now. It's the single best thing in all of gaming.

That's actually a really neat feature. I mean I have high speed internet on my phone and a bajillion gigs of gata banked but still, neat. Also if you connect two steam devices on the same network steam can detect that one device has game data and automatically streams it to the other when you hit download. We've come a long way from the says of having to create system links to shuffle and move our stream library around.

This saves Valve money in the long run.

As a side bonus, it also increases the "value" in being a Steam customer. Something that Epic, Microsoft, and Amazon simply don't understand is that by giving customers what they want, they become loyal customers. By adding this feature it makes it harder for other game stores to compete, which I'm sure they'll bitch and moan about later saying Valve is a monopoly because they treat customers well

The problem is that large companies don't need to actually compete with each other any more. If a big company does something bad people are more likely to scream "much capitalism" or "ze J00s" than blame the company and all the other big companies just follow suit and set that as the new standard.

He's tricking you into buying the whole set. It's a malicious tactic to get you invested in the ecosystem. Want to play your Deck game on your TV? Well better buy a Machine and switch over the SD card instead of buying a proper console with an actual concept behind it.
It's downright evil.

definition of monopoly is pretty loose but steam isn't stopping anyone else from competing and it's not some technical marvel to compete with them, so they only have a majority by being the best.
experts likely wouldn't call it a monopoly for those reasons alone.
Amazon has a monopoly because of their logistic/production networks, you couldn't set up an amazon competitor even with a trillion dollars.
you could sell your video game on your own website today in less than an hour of setup.

Valve is privately owned, no shareholders to make an excessive profit for.
>>
>>725793543
This has been the case with Steam games since forever it's just the wording that makes it seem like some new idea.
You have always been able to take installed Steam games on one drive and simply insert the drive and play or copy them onto a new PC once you verify the install location, assuming you already own the game on your account.
This is literally the same thing but instead of it being an SSD or external drive it's just with a Micro SD card.
If you don't want to do that than you can also just transfer the games over LAN and its trivially easy you just need to have both computers turned on and connected to the same network.
>>
>>725802740
I think it was the case for Steam keys specifically, yeah. They can sell it for whatever price anywhere but if it's activated on Steam, and presumably uses Valve's infrastructure like download bandwidth/mutiplayer servers and shit, it should have price parity with the store itself.

depends, They're not locking gameplay/progression behind lootboxes, you could make it all the way to pro esports without ever touching a case.
it's predatory and I dont like it but it's not as bad as gacha games where gameplay characters are timed exclusive naked women.
I do think world would be better off without either.
>>
I already have 8gigs of vram on my pc though. The only think that sucks with my pc is the processor, but in order to upgrade that I'm going to need a brand new motherboard.
I wonder if it would be better to buy this? Valve says its going to be 6 times stronger then the steam deck. Well, steam deck runs some games better then my pc, despite me having 8gigs of vram. For example Granblue Relink. It slogs on my pc but on steam deck it runs flawless. Samething with Cyberpunk.
On the flipside, if I'm playing any REengine game, like REmake4 or Monster Hunter, my pc fucking plays is perfect and meanwhile the steam deck can't run them nearly as well.

Anyway. A publically-owned company operates with the fiduciary duty of profiting it's shareholders. Customer comes second.
A privately-owned company can do whatever the hell they want. If they want to make money, it's in their best interest to put the interests of the customer first.

In most cases it won't and can't be a loss leader because it's also just a PC meaning if they did this there would be nothing stopping a company from buying 10000 units to only use as PC's and never play or buy games which would be a massive loss for Valve.
It's going to cost a lot more than most console players are expecting or used to paying for hardware.

brand loyalty is part of millennial identity. just look at the console wars. sucking off their multimillion dollar company while shitting on someone elses. whenever someone points out design flaws of their favourite machine the millenial response is "works on my machine" or "poorfag". compare an IBM thinkpad(gen x) and 2013 macbook(millenial). the latter is unrepairable and overpriced garbage, but millennials praised it because it's whoopin' lightweight(less durable) and has a minimalist design(less features). electronics devolved so much in the 2010's when millenials were in their 20's. or how about millennials gaslighting themselves into thinking using an android phone(open source) means you're a poorfag?

if you look on youtube it's zoomers who buy used laptops, preach about right to repair and promote stop killing games.

>kind to us?
Please stop being a simp for ten seconds.
They are being proactive. Windows is turning into a "YELL AT CORTANA/COPILOT TO TAKE A SHIT" unproducitivity device and they see the writing on the wall about how much Microsoft cares about gaming (they don't). If it were up to microsoft, all games would be exclusive to the microsoft store and all third party software would require a lengthy compatibility review to ensure it works exclusively with Copilot and can be controlled hands-free using AI.

That is the direction Microsoft is going in, and Valve is seeing this and saying "Oh fuck no" and pushing what I feel is their panic button: Make mid-range hardware themselves that is game-centric using Steam OS as a liferaft to escape Microsoft's plans to sink Windows as a general purpose consumer platform. We're going to see the smartphoneification of Windows even more than we've already seen.

It seems pro-consumer only because their interests align with ours this time, I don't want to be raped by AI. Only a few companies like Nintendo don't want your games raped by AI, and Volvo is one of them. It's pro-consumer because it's not windows trying to shove nu-Cortana down our throats and it's in valve's best interest as they are looking at a future where Steam may not even work on Windows. Microsoft may be getting ready to do to Steam what Valve does to random Japanese games and simply shadowban it without any explanation nor support on making it work.

I don't get what the end goal is and I think part of why the Gabe Cube is even happening after two other failures is because Valve doesn't, either. It would seem like basic physics that somebody with even minor amounts of experience with a PC or a smart phone would be able to accomplish any basic task on a PC faster than screeching at it to open a fucking file and navigate to a fucking web page. That uncertainty is where Valve decided to pull the trigger on what is otherwise a terrible move financially, this thing will never make its money back even if it's priced at $1300. But to have something to point to and say "You don't have to scream 'open a file you stupid nigger' at this box to make it work" is worth its brand weight in gold. You couldn't get better advertisement for your platform right now than being the one non-AI company in a sea of AI companies trying to farm and train new models off the dick pics of children with smart phones.

A bunch of masked kids standing in lines as an officer with a gun (Who would be the first out the door screaming into the parking lot in the event of a real shooting event) carefully watches them to make sure they're standing perfectly in line in compliance, in the background are multiple cameras saving every second of their compliance and likely selling the videos to multiple AI companies that are training on their faces and will be used to make videos for the dark net since every ranjeesh now has thousands of hours of footage of white american kids.

My friends would have NEVER put up with this shit in school ,even at his age. idk what they're putting in the water to make everyone so docile nowadays.

microsoft is killing the PC ecosystem and newer windows versions are slowly becoming something other than what you expect of a desktop computer. with steamOS valve can simply offer the same experience you had with windows 7 and people will flock to it

as for the gabecube, consoles are dying, exclusives were what kept sony alive and that is going away too, the market of "people who want casual couch experience that is NOT fisher price tablet bing bing wahoo" which is most of playstation and xbox gamers have nowhere to go, some gabe box with no paid online for you to play fifa and gta on a controller is going to sell like hotcakes

you can make a way beefier steamOS machine and use any controller you want (provided it's supported) rather than buying an entrylevel miniPC "console". seems like it only exists to directly attack deadbox, playstation, and switch1/2 (steamdeck)

Their interests are mostly aligned with yours right now. Their leadership has sound morals and they basically accidentally stumbled into a fairly stable market with no (real) competitors. That being said, they are one change in leadership away from using their lock-in and enshittifying everything, it's really just a matter of time. Gabe won't be at Valve forever.
They also absolutely do shady things with lootboxes, which are a gateway to gambling that is basically targeted at children.
>>725793673
Bullshit there are plenty of privately owned companies that do "unkind" things, Valve included (see the lootboxes).
>>
>>725810440
They were devising newer and more cancerous forms of DRM like the sony Rootkit scandal in '05, limited installations, some games even shipped with CD-keys that were misprinted so you couldn't even use them.

SecuRom had installation limits and disk checks. StarForce was kernel level DRM that would cause system crashes, hardware conflicts, and notable for being very difficult to remove. Steam itself is online activation DRM that only eventually won people over through sheer convenience.

You and I can, the problem with Linux in general is it appears to be wizardry to literally anyone else. A combination of ten year old stereotypes of having to set your own xorg.conf to set resolutions and modern reality of most people not even knowing that the operating system a computer ships with isn't part of the computer itself means the Year of the Linux Desktop is never happening. We can build all the high-end PCs we won't, they're ultimately useless because redditors just buy whatever is pinned on their PC Master race subforums and ignore the whys and hows.

It doesn't help that most Asians, Japanese especially, despite having such a strong tech sector seem to know next to fucking nothing about how computers work unless it's dragging a file into a folder. These people will keep Windows and pre-builts alive forever.

No they can not. Here is the proof:
https://www.itpro.com/business/careers-and-training/generational-decline-in-digital-literacy
>A recent study by the International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) measured a decline in the digital literacy of 14-year-olds across the EU and internationally since 2018, with 43% of students found to possess limited digital skills. Similarly, the UK’s Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) published a review of the standards in GCSE Computer Science in July 2024, which found a small drop in the number of students achieving grade A/7 between 2014 and 2019.

Gen Z literally doesn't know what a file or a folder is
https://futurism.com/the-byte/gen-z-kids-file-systems
>It’s as if students “have a laundry basket full of laundry” Ford added, “and they have a robot who will fetch them every piece of clothing they want on demand.” That realization, academics told The Verge, has them teaching computer fundamentals to their students alongside their usual technical fields. “These are smart kids,” Ford said. “They’re doing astrophysics. They get stuff. But they were not getting this.”

Objectively, they don't know what an ISO is, they don't know what files and folders are. Sub 80 IQ retards like you can't do it. Every study agrees: Your generation are even dumber than shit-eating jeets.

That reliance on Pavlovian conditioning alone could be shortsighted—even if it’s how the most frequented social-media apps increased their user bases. It's fine as long as you never give them money. The problem with gacha is that they don't realize that they don't have to pay money to keep playing these games. So they become whales and the game becomes their lives.

It's useful if you want a quick way to sort through a manual, but the way people use it now makes it seem like the only thing it's good for is being a worse search engine, spitting out lies, and writing half-assed scripts for indian jewtubers.

This, again, goes back around to most online users being really fucking stupid and even understanding what the tool is for to begin with. You think someone who is educated on chatGPT would be able to burn an ISO through rufus, enter their computers bios, and install an image without bricking their existing OS installs? What I just described requires multiple levels of expertise in how partitions work, hard drives work, filesystems work, all things that are unavailable to the new generation that thinks a computer is a bucket that things go into and the new-new generation that thinks computers are supermarkets that you steal people's Google Play cards from.

it's pretty easy, each install makes an isolated folder that houses the game's folder in a way that makes the game think it's on a Windows PC. So just go into the folder, drop the mods, start the game, it's the same way as on windows except the game is in a different place.

It is funny to think that Myspace used to be considered the most privacy-violating service online when the worst it did was collect first name - last names that didn't even have to be real, your email, and your IP.

Meanwhile, Tiktok has been sued multiple times for taking random pictures from your phone without telling you. This is on top of its normal telemetry where it takes maps of your entire network, tries probing devices on your network for vulnerabilities, and sends all of that straight to China's communist party. But yeah man, the real danger was Myspace for... having information that you gave them yourself and then possibly selling it. stupid millennials

Console kek, you're an idiot. You just don't understand file systems. We've been able to export games to removal media and copy to another computer from within steam, maybe since 2012. Now, they're not just outright portable due to how program installs work on PC operating systems. Of course, you can also copy the files and attempt to validate them in a different Steam install, as was always possible, though you Steam's ability to split them across multiple media. Try doing that with your digital games.
