Everything is on rails, yes, but they do a good job at throwing in unique sections to break up the monotony and the pacing is really good. I wish they did the 3rd one but 1 and 2 were the best anyway. The whole red dawn russian invasion arc with the army rangers is the best single player campaign FPS experience I've ever had, maybe next to the entirety of titanfall 2 or half life 1.

Then the second game decided, "We need to go bigger, better, and braver," and suddenly we've got an airport of dead civvies on bad plot circumstances where other parts of Makarov's team died too (including a man with the russian hammer & sickle tattooed into his neck) but somehow the American gets singled out, where Price activates a nuke in space to counter the Russian army, where Shepherd is a memorable yet kind of strangely handled antagonist flying straight to danger zones with a revolver despite being a General, etc., and all the while it's just a gigantic action movie homaging action movies.All that spirit is completely gone between the games, and Task Force 141 just sorta ascended to superheroes with a chip on their shoulders. And then Ramirez and eventually Sandman effectively toss aside the first game's thin veneer of pretending you aren't the central hero by literally making the entirety of war efforts depend on you and you alone. And it just kinda got silly, even before MW3 implausibly had Russia invade half the world.

I think reach was a great example of all of this with the visuals and music being gorgeous, having a pretty simple but compelling story of an inevitable defeat, varied levels with interesting level design, and an excellent multiplayer with even more customization and socializing. It's definitely par for the course as far as halo games go in thilese departments. When it comes to gameplay I think it is the most interesting one. Armor abilities take an otherwise mediocre shooter to give it some interesting flair. Every ability has it's use and changes how you play the game. It added variety to a formula that had barely changed at all for four games and I praise it for that. I think people wanking armor abilities as being the "downfall of halo" don't want to admit it was just 343 being the downfall, not armor abilities. tl;dr I don't think halo ever had very great gameplay but that's not why people played them and that's fine, I still like the games, just don't pretend it's a paragon of shooter gameplay
