All you need to know is that the game wants you to fight tough battles so grinding on easy fights is detrimental and will likely make the enemies scale faster than your stats. But the enemies do also have hard caps as to how strong they can get.

When explaining the dragon war, they use tale of bayeax style art, and Festers explanation about the moon that never sets has that uncanny, medieval religious art (the type that looks kinda realistic but just has zero consistent perspective. In terms of writing, some characters are kinda boring. I like Dart but he doesn't stand out. Shana is sooo goddamn boring. Kongol is kinda just there. I love messing around with the different jobs and finding funny ways of defeating enemies. The plant boss on hiryuu mountain, for example, is only weak to physical attacks, and has 5 minions. So I just made all my characters a monk and spammed the AOE physical kick attack monks get. EZ. I'm also leveling up black mage and white mage on two characters, which means I can heal and do elemental damage with two characters at the same time. I also have a mystic knight and a ranger (ranger is kinda shit)

Timed hits are done better in both paper mario/mario Luigi. The graphics are not as pretty or interesting as, say, ff8 that came out around the same time. The plot is pretty generic other than some twists here and there. Hell, even the music that most people consider a highlight, is no better than whatever you could find in Wild Arms 1.Again, it doesn't do anything wrong other than maybe being a bit too slow. And hell, the final disc IS pretty kino, but i just find myself thinking "that's it?" and not in a simple and elegant way like CT.

It's really tough going back to jrpgs after you get older. When I was younger I loved the characters and narrative of Tales of Symphonia, and I still do to an extent, but it is just so incredibly childish and gamey now. It feels like a childish Xenogears where you uncover different layers of the story as you progress, except the characters never really reflect on the nature of what is happening in the narrative. Like the discovery that there are in fact two worlds, and that the church has been deceiving everyone and sacrificing young women for no reason for thousands of years, is met with glazed eyes and "yeah, that sucks!"And then that the Desians are literally half elven nazis turning people into gems to boost their stats, who are actually led by pretty much a god who transcends both worlds and is a hero of myths from thousands of years ago. "eh let's kill him haha." Even Lloyd's father being effectively thousands of years old, never fucking brought up. The nature of these plot revels would break every character's entire world perspective imo. It would be like finding that Jesus was in fact the son of God, and that mortality is truly not a biological inevitability. It shakes the idea of human morality to its core. XG doesn't deal too much with ideas like that either given what is revealed in the story, which would have a similar effect, but I think the pacing of XG is so much faster that it makes sense for characters to be shell shocked.
