I even enjoy Metroid Prime 3 a lot (in some ways more than 2 - to the point they draw about equal on pros and cons for me).

I was expecting Myles to be as annoying as GoW's Atreus.

This game is the picture perfect example of

The pointless desert dividing the areas is by far the worst thing about it. If they removed the desert, took each biome area, some of the shrine puzzles from the desert, integrated them all together, then it would be a good game (pretty much just Prime 1 except even Prime 1 had shit like Crashed Frigate to make it more interesting).

The devolution of Prime 1 to this is a massive indicator that modern game devs have no idea how to make good worlds anymore. They're probably only taught to ever make a big Ubisoft open world when they're studying game design. Blame BotW and by extension Elden Ring.

I think the criticisms given are valid but are being portrayed as a much bigger part of the game than they are, at least for where I am in the game so far. I only just got out of Volt Forge and into the desert, found my way to the frozen area. I have only met Myles and he sucks but he has chimed in all of maybe 2-3 times in the 3-4 hours since I left him in Green Fury. The worst of him is the escort mission and him chattering much more in the end of green fury, and then the infamous 'check your map' webm, but other than that 95% of my gameplay has been getting to enjoy traditional Prime gameplay in cool environs. I haven't explored or traversed enough of the desert yet to be too critical of it, I stopped by a few spots of interest but otherwise went to the next area, maybe it'll get obnoxious later as I have to keep going through it and maybe future NPC's in the squad will be worse but right now I think an 8/10 is completely fair to the game. It is a good, competent, fun game with some bad elements tacked on.

Absolutely feels like Prime when it tries. The combat, the exploration, scanning, atmosphere, all of it. Collecting power-ups and using them on old areas to get to new power-ups / locations is fun and every area (that is not the desert) is gorgeous and cool to look at and immerse yourself in.

Psychic powers are implemented better than I might have thought, they're a little too prevalent (literally EVERYTHING is 'Psychic X' now with Psychic Bombs, Psychic Beams, Psychic Boots etc) but it gets creative with ideas like using them to pick up your own Morph Ball Bombs and put them into out of reach slots, or using the guided beam in combat to hit weakspots and multiple enemies at once.

The only companion I've met so far isn't as intrusive as I'd feared, most of the game I've been left well enough alone and I like it that way. I can count only 2-3 times of him messaging you in Volt Forge and the stupid map thing only happens once. And in the desert I only got one message from him while exploring.

The bike is cool. It's unnecessary to the game and does feel like an outdated control scheme but it's still cool, I like the tracks and Samus doing slides/jumps and I like how you don't have to worry about parking it you can just summon the bike anywhere.

Myles (and presumably all the NPC's) ARE a bad addition to the game, I think the game is good so far in spite of them not because of them. Myles is every bit as obnoxious and cringe-worthy as every preview lead me to believe, he's just thankfully not as prevalent as I've seen people say. I hear he chimes in more if the player seems to be spinning their wheels but I have no idea, seems varied in how many people get him.

I have not been in the desert long enough to be especially critical of it but I can see how it's a low point, it really is vast / empty with only a few points of interest and feels like a means of padding, it has its novelty of Samus traversing it but I get the feeling that novelty will wear off soon. It also isn't THAT large though so it's not as though it'll be that much of a pain either to go across it or explore it in its entirety but it is a downside all the same.

The levels are pretty linear, at least more so than you'd expect of a Metroid with many parts just going in one direction without the ability to get lost. Volt Forge is cool but it's particularly annoying in how twice over it involves going down a series of one-way elevators and corridors, turn on the power, then go back UP the same elevators/corridors that just now have enemies in them. I read this issue persists throughout the game so while I do like these areas they sound too straightforward.

While I think they're implemented well enough I do think the game is really heavy handed with the Psychic thing. Lot of upgrades are just Samus' regular upgrades but with 'PSYCHIC' tacked on to it.

the problem is that you can turn the hint system off, and that the aurora unit at most tells you that what you're looking for to progress isn't on the planet when you run into a dead end. Miles, on the other hand, spams you every 15 minutes about where you should go next. Oh, hey you've got an upgrade, why dont you go back to <specific location> to progress the story? Nevermind that thgey made it so that there's a GIANT FUCKING DESERT THAT TAKES 5 MINUTES TO CROSS, AS WELL AS AN ENDGAME OBJECTIVE TO FIND THE FUCKING CRYSTALS, nevermind there's a direct incentive to drive around the big ass fucking desert to find shit (which makes the game think youy might be lost anyways and spoil you on the next objective).
