>Is Arm the future of handheld gaming, or is it just something for headsets?

>I don’t know. I think Arm devices are definitely a good fit for lower performance, like anything lower than Steam Deck. But it’s possible it’ll be a good option for something on the order of the Steam Deck performance envelope. We don’t really try to steer the market one direction or another; we just want to make sure that good options are always supported.

What did Valve mean by this regarding the Steam Deck 2?

>>
>>727618256
Did they say "phone" or "Arm?"
Because I'm pretty sure modern Mac use arm also, so they might be talking about making Steam on Mac more viable.
>>
They need to make Steam RAM and Steam GPU to fix the shortages. It makes sense for them to do this since their entire business depends on people being able to get hardware for gaming.
>>
>>727617603
Yes, Windows on Arm is like Android on a tablet. It just doesn't work and will never take off. It takes a company like Apple to make Arm laptops/desktops work.
>>
>>727620286
>they might be talking about making Steam on Mac more viable
Proton on Mac would be a dream come true, but it would also kill all their Linux ventures. Valve despise Apple now though.
Even when they updated CSGO to 64-bit they refused to bring it back to macOS.

Relevant part of the interview.
This is just a compatibility interface so x86 (windows apps) can run on arm64 (mac, phones etc) without recompiling. In theory, this interface could allow you to install software directly from steam onto phones.

Metal is based on Vulkan. Valve even had the early working for Proton on Mac going, but they cancelled all plans when Apple dropped 32-bit support in 2019 and basically said "fuck you, we're not doing this again" and didn't even bother porting their own games back to macOS, even going so far as to pull the 64-bit ones just to really tell Apple to go to Hell.

Technically is does. Power generation, even nuclear, still makes steam to turn the turbines which turn the generator to make power.
So, while you plug your Deck into charge it, it is using power made by using steam.

Steam Deck 2 won't aim for performance that's "lower than Steam Deck [1]".
It will use some evolution of the AMD SOCs that are being used in other gaming handhelds today. RDNA 5 or 6 once a suitable mobile form of it is available

If nothing else, I think this definitively puts the kibosh on rumors about Valve going for ARM with a significantly performant translation layer for the Deck 2. Which is a bit of shame, honestly, since I don't think x86 has a future in anything resembling a mobile device.

https://www.itpro.com/software/open-source/linux-just-hit-an-all-time-high-share-of-the-global-desktop-market-and-surging-user-numbers-in-india-are-driving-uptake-of-the-open-source-operating-system

The use of Linux as a desktop operating system has hit a new high, according to new data from Statcounter.

The open source operating system has appeared on just over 4% of desktops worldwide for the first time – up from just under 3% a year ago. It might not seem like much, but for a niche operating system like Linux it’s quite a big step.

So what’s driving this? Looking at the Statcounter data a little more closely, one reason for the overall rise is a big jump in the use of Linux in India – up from 8% in February last year to 15% last month.

lmao nigger nice source
meanwhile in reality, from websites that linux users actually use

Yeah imagine telling 1980s computer nerds that portable computers exist, except the BIOS is permanently locked and you don't get access to driver install files.

If Valve can make a Linux phone that would be amazing. True desktop capability.

You can make a phone into a desktop using anbox + xorg but it's really hacky and janky. Requires a Samsung DeX enabled device and USB C laptop dock.

Valve is a privately owned company with no plans to go public and no plans to rapidly grow it staff. Gabe does little side projects like the Deck, the Cube and VR but they haven't made a real game in over a decade, the only thing they excel at is running the steam platform and helping devs optimize games for SteamOS. They'll never grow to be as big as Nvdia and they have no interest in making memory modules let alone getting into gpu/cpu design architecture.

X86 is still far more powerful then ARM and it can be just as efficient if it's not being run on windows 11. ARM isn't gonna be used in anything but budget laptops and Apple product any time soon.

Why do people expect magic with the deck 2? They're going to go a low-end route again.

the closest you can get spiritually to a gabephone is by buying the fairphone 6 since it should be capable of installing linux soon just like every past fairphone

The OP article is clickbait niggershit, Valve isn't making phones anytime soon. Actual article is Valve experimenting with ARM processors and PowerPCs because non-gaming tech sectors are seeing performance gains with the newest iterations, something that isn't happening with traditional configurations, and because ARM devices can be made smaller that ties back into what they want with the Steam Machines, Deck, and VR.

>X86 is still far more powerful then ARM
Apple and Unified memory would like to have a word with you.

It's very likely they make a modified steam OS phone that runs x86 desktop windows games and Android apps.
