If you're a new player, you'll get the fastest start if you go with the Nightfall campaign during character creation to get access to heroes (customizable NPC party members) immediately. They're pretty core to PVE gameplay. Otherwise you're gonna be stuck slumming it with henchmen (non-customizable NPC party members) until you can get to Eye of the North or cross over into the Nightfall campaign (you can crossover around the midpoint of each campaign, although with Nightfall it's still fairly early on). Henchies aren't too bad, but properly built heroes are always better. That said, Factions is decently fast too. Prophecies is the one that reeeeaaally drags out the early game. I suppose that means it might be good for new players since the learning curve is very gentle. It has a whole section of the campaign that's basically just glorified tutorials for PvP modes.

The difference of course is that a player could gift or trade you an item they find of course. But you can't solo much of this game so you have to play in a group of either bots, players or a mix. There are however builds that let you solo farm specific drops like with a monk build where your hp is so low that you can't take certain damage due to how their skills work.

You can choose to log in to either your steam-created or if you remember your old email/login/password you can log into your old Anet account instead. NOT being an "MMO" was one of the selling points. You didn't pay a sub fee, you could play with others or not play with others. But the build variety in that game is extremely limited compared to GW. Dragon's Dogma? Aside from having an extremely shallow character build system, its environments are dull and lack variety. All the other games I can think of are JRPGs but I prefer western or western-styled games.
