There will just be jeet-free forks, ez. Nobody has to accept jeets in any distro because if they don't like it, they can just fork it lmao.
>>
>>727645042
>why?
It's supposedly a 4k (with FSR3 ;)) system, and 8GB VRAM is not nearly enough for 4k. Even aggressively upscaled 4k with low/medium textures needs more than 8GB VRAM. This system will only play at its intended resolution with games released before ~2023.

It is no surprise. Ars is extremely biased towards Microsoft. The previous Steam Machine they declared incapable of working with TVs because it failed to work with an obscure non-standard monitor. They just wrote another article blaming the Open Source graphics driver for not implementing a feature it was blocked from supporting by the HDMI Forum's lawyers.

>Does support for AMD last longer than two years on Linux?
The AMD Linux driver does not share any source code with the driver for legacy operating systems. The current generation driver supports everything back to first-gen GCN. The previous generation drivers are also still maintained, although not great anymore since that is pre-Vulkan hardware and Gallium Nine isn't maintained anymore.

>Ars found that games like Returnal are playable on an RX 7600 with just 8GB of RAM at 1440p and max settings in Windows. But switch to SteamOS, and the performance is less than a third. The same issue is not present with the 16GB RX 7600 XT.
These are AMD cards. Not sure if you're looking at the wrong article.

The article basically says SteamOS may not have proper raytracing support though. Otherwise the performance difference wasn't that big. People claiming Linux is better all-around are usually a bit dishonest.

Proton isn't an emulator. None of these games are native on any platform. NT runs these games through a compatibility layer and uses vendor drivers that wrap the mid-level D3D12 to internal APIs that may or may not be lower level. Not that different from how VKD3D implements D3D12 in low-level Vulkan that is handled by RadV.
There's not necessarily any performance penalty other than games being optimized for vendor drivers, and not being optimized for VKD3D putting the burden on VKD3D devs to try to figure out what games are doing that is slow.

Still would be better if more game developers would target Vulkan since D3D12 is such shit.

Bazzite is just Fedora Atomic Desktop OS without any of the accelerations from SteamOS so it performs worse but supports Nvidia. CachyOS is what should be used. It is SteamOS but with support for Nvidia and in fact superior to SteamOS for performance. It is so much more superior that Valve now takes customizations from CachyOS to implement in SteamOS. It is the cutting edge in gaming OSs and there is no substitute. It is the peak of gaming operating systems by a wide margin.

its about an operating system, waht do locked down consoles having to do with an operating system that u can install on unlocked devices?
>>
>>727661557
It's a fact. On paper linux looks like it uses less memory but memory utilization is actually less efficient on linux than windows and linux also handles running low on memory much worse than windows does.
>>
>>727661817
In my experience the complete opposite of this is true.
Linux is both more memory-efficient and handles low-memory conditions better than Windows.
>>
>>727661817
No, it's not. They allocate memory in entirely different manners, you fucking retard. Assuming you configure windows to have a fixed size page file, the memory exhaustion behavior is actually WORSE there, you get a popup about low memory and then the entire OS locks up. On Linux, at least I can just hit Alt+Print+F to kill whatever is eating the most memory immediately.
>>
>>727661758
Steam OS targets specific hardware, like MacOS does, you can not install it on any device.

So I keep hearing about Linux and hate W11, what are some things I should take into consideration when using this OS?
>>
>>727662026
>>727662030
You're both wrong.

It's well known Linux doesn't handle low memory well and this is even acknowledged by the devs. They have said it's because they don't design linux to be used by some tard as a personal computer. They design linux to be run on a server located in a rack. They don't think it's practical to give a warning and expect a user to kill processes to free memory because there's not actually going to be someone sitting there monitoring it. They expect you to buy more hardware they're going to need and that's it.
>>
>>727644902
Is there even any released hardware SteamOS officially supports that comes with 8GB VRAM? I though SteamOS only supported the Deck and a few other handhelds, those don't have VRAM.

A server in a rack is actually much more likely to run out of memory than a desktop, those things get abused to hell by shitty code or a batch job that loads ginormous data files into memory for no good reason. There's no great way to deal with oom but just killing suspicious shit until the pain stops is reasonable enough to me desu.

No argument retardo.

You don't use shortcuts on the steam deck you use CMD lines.

The frame buffer size with 24-bit color depth for the most common "4K" resolution, 3840x2160, is: 3840 x 2160 x 3 = 24883200, i.e. slightly below 25 megabytes. 8GB is plenty for 4K, the problem is that the GPU doesn't have enough power to render the image at that resolution in modern AAA games.
>>
>>727644902
Windows 11 can't even run the file explorer apparently lol
>>
The biggest thing that’ll hurt them pr wise is the 4k claim it’ll be perfect for 1080/1440 in most scenarios.
>>
>>727667613
The problem is not the amount of memory the final rendered frame takes up. It's how much memory it takes to generate that frame. This is not decoding a video stream. There's a lot of very complex calculations involved.
>>
>>727669020
problem is that 4k is a great marketing term and everyone has a 4k tv these days. marketing it as 1440p has normies going "whaa?"

No one does 10-bit colour outside of HDR displays, which barely anyone supports. 24bit framebuffer output is enough, unless you think the framebuffer needs an alphachannel for some reason.

That's why you'll never dominate the market and that's why Valve will never release a generic SteamOS distro.

NTA, and i dont know what tests they ran, but i have SteamOS(original, not Bazzite) installed on my old couch PC(RX 6600 8GB), and i get vastly better performance in Returnal on it than i do with Win11
With Win11, with FSR on i get to 90-100 fps at 1080p
With SteamOS, without FSR i get to 120fps at 1440p
in both cases the graphic settings are the same
