Yeah he is, not the actual cartels fixing prices for hardware so consumers can't afford them anymore
>>
Steam isn't perfect, game ownership is a real problem, and Gabe arguably takes a little too much off the top for allowing people the privilege of selling their game on steam, but seriously, HOW? What's the alternative here? Is this just corporate seething because they can't compete with a model that isn't obligated to blindly increase profits every year for the shareholders? Does steam not sell enough advertisement space? Is it not being enshittified fast enough for epic to keep up? Should I have to pay an additional membership fee on top of the actual price of games so I can play without in game popups? Maybe steam should limit my gaming hours or my internet connection speed on MY fucking PC to extort me for more money? Steam is literally only a monopoly because corporations refuse to offer competitive services. I have controller input, mod support, community pages with actual feedback and ratings, automatic updates i can toggle for my entire library, and streamlined social invites across the entire platform. The only thing I could ask for right now (aside from the most obvious gripe) is integrated voice chat.
>>

>>
Forget it OP, they're Valve simps. He could stomp on these peoples' balls and they'd still smile and ask for another.
>>
>>727655576
The other option is to just stop using Steam
Steam itself was only invented as a counter to people trading/reselling games
HL2 is about 8-10 hours a most. He needed a reason to maximize profit and he did it by tying the purchase to an email account in 2004

Steam is a monopoly because they shit in your dinner first and you were retarded enough to eat it
>>
>>727655576
>Gabe arguably takes a little too much off the top
There should be a tiered system
Don't want the workshop, forums, market (inkluding trading cards) and so on?
Sure, the cut's less, like 15% or something. You want the whole package? Fork over those 30%, because the features are so incredibly numerous that 30% can very much be worth it

Also, the alternative can be that you pay PER UPDATE like the Playstation Store does to developer, stifling hotfixes and smaller updates. A flat 30% cut for more features than any competitor and those being much better too sounds kinda reasonable.
>>
>>727647485
You're just mad you'll never have a fleet of science vessels.

PC is actually fucked since it's inhrently fully based on a killswitch. Literally Steam originally was aiming to be even more fucked than securom
>>
>>727655714
Arguably yes, but it is a convenient service, and valve continues to act in good faith despite the obvious power imbalance in the end user license agreement. Yes, I don't own the games, I could lose access to my library, and I can't re-sell them. This is an obvious downgrade from gaming in the 20'aughts. But the games are cheaper with constant sales, they are always in stock, the selection is larger and allows smaller developers to participate in the medium, and I get to see honest reviews from actual players before I purchase. It remains the best game store, bar none.

The PC Steam Machine sucks, people already build it without Valve being involved. Proton only works on Linux of AMD drivers. They are in a lawsuit for antitrust violations. They are in a lawsuit for patent infringement.

No they are not “innovating”, they’re the reason why you have to pay dumb buggy content instead of forcing companies to release a whole working game.
>>
>>727656141
What’s up with this retarded anti fact narrative? Copy protection and single use install codes is older than Steam. Steam is the only reason we can install a game on multiple devices. EA wanted you to buy a new game code every time you got a new PC.
>>
>>727654457
>literally admitted in an interview that the reason he made steam was to stop people being able to resell/loan to friends Half-Life 2
he literally said he got the idea from porting doom. doom was distributed through forums and had an open source porting culture. him making the doom port for windows NT made him look at that and gave him the idea for steam. its also why steam has always had community pages for every game. meanwhile epig has to vibe code its own shopping cart and cant even get it to work correctly.

funny
>>
>>727656558
>just guarantee nobody will buy your game and the store gives your game away for free without your consent!

First off, the Steam Agreement is awful. As someone who did read it, the context of it just bowls down to having zero games and you take the blame for everything that ever happened in Steam. Never forget they never offered refunds until Australia forced them to, never forget they lied to German courts about ownership and definitely never forget they made you sign a waiver to never enter a class action lawsuit.

They are not the good guys, prices are not low. $80 and higher games do exist. Games on Steam are shovelware or scams that Valve is clearly not policing. Reviews aren’t honest either, did you forget how Valve created a new system to help corporate studios hide real reviews each time people mass bomb it.

Here's some facts

Gabe was interviewed in November of 2004 and admitted his goal was to disrupt the reselling/trading/loading of PC games since it ruined the marketplace. He did use the example of custom WADs with Doom as a stepping stone to getting the idea of 'one sold game, one owner only'
>>
>>727647485
Steam is holding back the gaming industry by giving me a centralized place to play all my digital games, giving me insane discounts that regular stores in Europe would never ever give and by not jewing me for the use of my own internet like Sony does?
>>
>>727656809
What's the better alternative Ttat isn't some utopian dream?
Steam literally made PC gamingn economically viable and eventually shit on console gaming.
You can buy dirt cheap keys from legitimate 3rd party sellers and steam allows this.
Steam does have a decent refund option now.
What more do you want ? A better alternative wasn't going to come from Sony/microshit or ea. And a utopian alternative with an open source platform wasn't going to be adopted by big Devs or normies

A friend of mine worked a job where he had a repeat customer who worked at Valve, and out of curiosity he asked how things are going.

The guy confirmed that Gabe has pretty much never entered the building in years, or at least it's very rare. Apparently his whole thing now is depth sounding and mapping the ocean floor, which is why he's living on multiple boats. I don't think he has much of any involvement with Valve beside giving yes and no's, and generally making sure things are fine.

Ubisoft goes Steamworks bye bye, always on DRM.

my biggest fear is that gabe's successor starts doing too much and fucks everything up
>>
>>727659292
Yea I think a huge part of Valve's success is not being in a rush to keep changing everything. I'm filled with hate the moment I open an app or site that worked perfectly fine just some months ago, and now, some completely unnecessary update breaks it or just makes it flat out worse.

But that's not Tim Sweeney, peddlar of the engine destroying the games industry with it's sweet lies of good graphics and short development times

>No they are not “innovating”, they’re the reason why you have to pay dumb buggy content instead of forcing companies to release a whole working game.
Not even you believe this
>>
>>727659227
>valve is the only one not using kernel level anti-cheat in their games
>neither is steam's drm
>non-valve games must disclose to customers about the usage of kernel level anti-cheat in their games
Meanwhile other clients don't even tell you about the usage of ai or kernel level anti-cheat.

Is it opposite day in India or something?

>ohhhh but I could
Fuck off retard, holy shit
Valve offers very good prices, my games and saves everyone, free online, and the deck is affordable, as is the gabecube. You can fuck right off with your shilling. Who is paying you? Microshit?

No they don't

What's your point?
Gabe fucked the average PC game? Yes

>>727659930
They do!

>>727647485
That would be timmy for offloading game development and optimization to 2000 dollar consumer GPUs. I swear, I literally don't see the difference between games 5-10 years ago vs now. In fact, I think they look worse with even worse optimization.

Metro Exodus with raytracing looks better than any UE5 game with a third of the hardware requirements.

How?

weird way to say saving gaming by finally creating a unified linux platform that can be confirmed to run stable games on a matching hardware set.

I don't know how he keeps getting away with it. It's such an incredibly limited tool. Like trying to make a robot that runs on x/y coordinates only

You aren't getting it. There is no reason for valve to change their cut based on offering or not offering a service that costs them nothing.
Not only do these services cost them nothing, they are also not high value so they couldn't charge people meaningfully more for them.

Weird how all the racist shills vanished

I don't think you remember PC gaming before steam. For instance from 2004 or so onward PC was getting monkey versions of some games, I recall fifa being the biggest offender. They explained it with uhhhhh PC doesn't have the performance to run this(we're talking ps2 title in 2004). When they didn't try to play dumb like that they complained about pyracy. There was also rampant case of developer after developer getting fucked because they tried to make their PC franchise fit on consoles - supreme commander is an obvious case but for example the commandos series has died because of this. And in the background microsoft was trying to force gfwl with paid online into PC gaming.

Valve's "piracy is a service issue" approach as well as digital distribution being cheaper for the developers has largely reversed these trends. Yes initially there was a backlash to steam as a thing because no disc sharing, people complaining that it's bloat to have a program running in the background, even that it's spyware, but it appeared in times when CoD of all franchises had a console-exclusive entry, the future wasn't exactly rosy.

>I literally don't see the difference between games 5-10 years ago vs now.
Everything is more blurry because framegen. It's progress. Yeah you can see shit is bad because some people are still using Cyberpunk as an example of graphical fidelity and for performance bragging. Cyberpunk is 5 years old.
>>

>gfwl with paid online into PC gaming.
nope

Do better
>>
>>727663494
Yes it was you dumb fuck:
>Initially, Games for Windows – Live launched with its multiplayer features locked behind an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription, priced at $49.95.[7] In 2008, Microsoft removed the paid tier from GFWL, making all Xbox Live multiplayer services free on PC.[8]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Games_for_Windows_%E2%80%93_Live

As I've said you don't remember those times.

>The other option is to just stop using Steam
>Steam itself was only invented as a counter to people trading/reselling games
>HL2 is about 8-10 hours a most. He needed a reason to maximize profit and he did it by tying the purchase to an email account in 2004
This is a crock of shit. You're telling me he did all that and then immediately released the hl2 on xbox where the disks could be traded? Come the fuck on.

Take me back to bc2 on ps3. Great distance viewing and no anti-soul fog.

the relentless browns and bots endlessly trying to spin steam as some microsoft-tier scumsucking conglomerate is tiring, but at least it's easy to shut their poorly structured argumentative bitching (and flat out lies) with so little effort

between proton and the new ARM translation thing I don't think we appreciate him enough for breaking gaming free of monopolists like microsoft

Hey Tim maybe if you had alternative indie devs publish on your platform I would actually buy from you.

>>727656809
valve does not decide prices of the games and the 30% cut doesnt have anything to do with the price
