You didn't fall for the "physical media is better for preservation" grift right?
>>
Backed up files is the only true form of game preservation. Datahoarding chads stay winning
>>
the only real media preservation is a NAS with 100tb+ of hard drive storage and save all roms, movies, songs, pictures etc you want/need.
>>
Stone tablets will erode. Paper will rot or burn. Even digital media degrades over time. Nothing is forever except nothingness.
>>
Further proof that Gen 7 was the last good gen. It’s a shame digital only games got started midway but at least anything from a professional studio had physical releases.

exactly how flash memory works
you have to do the same with pc ssd's

they do not physically inscribe the data like with an hdd and thus require power to not lose data
>>
if you're not touching a game for 10 years what is the point of owning it
>>
>>727651828
As stated, that is indeed how flahs memory works. The electrical charge standing for ones and zeroes doesn't stay put forever. Not a big issue in regular use, you're unlikely to run into significant dataloss in a few years of cold storage, but bad for archiving.

We didn't lose anything. You can go compare modern Bibles to the Dead Sea Scrolls and they're 99,99% the same, if you account for translation artefacts.
And even the differences tend to be minute, like a bit of a sentence added, or like saying Jacob had either 70 or 75 family members.

Seeing how the world is going, and how shit every other religion is, this is objectively false.

Reminder that you can help preservation by submitting dump metadata to Redump (optical media) and No-Intro (cartridges and digital downloads, including DRM-free PC releases).
https://dumping.guide/
http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=Dumping_Guides

For the record, this infograph (back from 2022) is not about missing official releases for those consoles. All of them were dumped. It's meant to indicate how many got a single dump, and how many got 2 or more.

>what drives do I need to dump CD games?
http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=Optical_Disc_Drive_Compatibility:_CD
For PS2 and PC DVD games, any DVD drive will work fine.
>why are verifications important?
>Verifications are vital in verifying that the information in the database is accurate, and that a dump is reproduceable by another person using the same tools and methods. An existing dump could be erroneous due to a variety of factors, including user error, hardware and software issues, and more. Furthermore, even when someone is doing everything correctly and has adequate software and hardware, there is a chance that their dump could be incorrect, due to the way data sectors on a disc are read and validated (especially Compact Discs). In most cases, the data will be read and verified successfully, but the process of reading data is not infallible, so there are times when a second dump of the same disc could provide differing information. Verifications help to identify and correct some of these issues.

The software used for this purposes is MPF (Windows-only), which serves as a frontend for DIC and Redumper (and Aaru too).
https://github.com/SabreTools/MPF/releases/latest
You can also use their standalone versions (ALSO available for Mac and Linux):

Judaism is the villain in the old testament
>>727652567
The first bible was Phoenician and Aramaic. Jews try to claim the Aramaic writing as Hebrew but it predates Judaism by about 2,000 years (modern Judaism is younger than even Islam at 600AD). The first language the bible was translated to was Koine Greek as it was the second most popular written word at the time (3-400 BC) after the previous universal written language Aramaic fell out of style (which Hebrew used). You can tell it predates the Hebrew translation at around 150BC because the Greek version is approximately 3,000x more verbose and the Hebrew variant is extremely lacking in vocabulary and length, written at a 2nd grade level for the time. In fact the only archeological evidence we have of the modern Hebrew variant puts it closer to the translation to Latin which is just hilarious to me. No one likes to talk about this irrefutable fact however because the conversation immediately changes to the Holocaust.

But yeah definitely boot up your Switch/DS/GBA/GB cartridges once a year so they don't degrade. Same for old USB drives and SSDs. They lose information without power over a period of time.
>>
>>727657439
Its not schizophrenic. Why would god suddenly be willing to change his mind about humanity just because a version of himself died? That doesnt even make sense. We have seen how cruel and malicious he is. He much he relishes in the suffering of others. The old testement is very clear about this. The kind of deity who is like that isnt suddenly going to just welcome the common man into the kingdom of heaven because a part of himself was killed by them in the silliest of ways. Like how does that even make sense. Have you ever stopped to think about why he would suddenly have a change of heart? What has convinced him? Is there any evidence of this? Any at all?

none of this refutes the fact they they have achieved societal cohesion and morality approximately compatible with our own despite the lack of a christian belief system. Your claim is that Christian countries are the most moral however according to our very own metrics it seems a non-christian country has achieved societal morality on par if not surpassing ours in quantifiable ways. Of course this is due to a myriad of factors but that's the point, we can't attribute societal well-being to religion alone even if it serves as a useful stepping stone

I guess you don't understand how installs from bluray/DVD work on consoles. They're compressed on disc and have to be decompressed using a proprietary system on the console itself, adding a layer of abstraction and requiring access to physically functional hardware. Also frequently both Xbox and Playstation updated this decompression/unpacking process meaning if you did find a functional console if the internet service was down there is a good chance the console couldn't unpack/decrypt the content anyway. Not to mention even the PS5 requires regular updates to decrypt bluray disc content which is why you have to do those small system updates when new games come out occasionally.

>the only real media preservation is a NAS
>using HDDs or SSDs for long-term storage
No. NAS file servers are for personal archives that are viewed and modified regularly.
If you want to store stuff long term you have two options. Industrial-grade tape backups with one of those fancy tape decks and multi-TB tapes that will last a minimum of 20 years, or archival-grade gold DVD-Rs that are rated to last 100 years. If you don't mind replacing the medium every 20 years or so, the tapes aren't bad since you can get tons of data on a single tape. The DVDs are great for extreme long-term files, except the storage capacity is tiny, so you'll need boxes of them to store TB's of data.

You do know preservation has always required work, right? No matter the medium. Nothing lasts. Paper can deterioate if not stored properly. No matter what physical storage you use for archiving digital media, you need to look at it every couple years.
This is why it's important to make sure you can legally keep back ups of anything you own. Licencing is just a corporate scam to make sure you keep buying. Anything with a life time warranty or kept alive through maintenance is less profitable than shit that breaks down fast.
>>
I haven't done anything preventative for my physical media for over a decade now and all of my data still exists.

One time on a whim I decided to delete everything I had. Movies, music, photos, everything. There were times I regretted it and also times I found it freeing. Ultimately I settled into a mindset of being comfortable with not trying to hold onto everything all the time. I just try to accept things as they are, accept that most everything is out of my hands ultimately, and just be okay with everything being temporary, especially myself. But I'm not giving advice. If hanging on to video games is what you want to do then keep doing it for as long as you feel like you need to.

Physical media was always flawed since unless you use digital backup methods you're just sentencing the data to death.
A hard drive is a physical item you can buy. even cheap 1TB ones can back up thousands of games depending on the size and will take up a fraction of the storage space.

Physical lost years ago, digital just makes more sense.

To be fair, there's an argument to be made for a DAP that has a line-level out, most phones do not properly isolate the headphone jack from power and as a result are noisy, and additionally most phones do not have particularly good DACs, never mind media players themselves. To get decent audio quality on my phone I have to actually run fucking mpd with a control app and upsample the audio to 192khz in software because otherwise it sounds jagged and unnatural - which is a massive battery drain

The worshipping of physical media is largely done by collectors who wants to blow smoke up everyone's ass about their value because its in their best interest. Video games were *always* a digital medium. If you like the pretty boxes that's fine, but you really aren't gaining anything from owning an offical physical copy. Piracy and emulation is unironically the only true form of preservation if that's what you care about.
>>
>>727655198

That's not the reason I'm hoarding data, I'm hoarding it because nothing on the internet is forever and we're clearly entering an authoritarian era where everything is censored.
I'm also not foolish enough to believe the Internet Archive will be around for my entire lifetime.
>>
>>727661868
>If you like the pretty boxes that's fine, but you really aren't gaining anything from owning an offical physical copy.

look up "Nag Hammadi library". some guy dug up a sealed barrel full of books from the 3rd century in Egypt. a book properly stored could be perfectly readable thousands of years from now. anything using fancy technology will be completely inaccessible 50 years from now due to changing formats, censorship, societal collapse, solar storms, etc. if you want longevity and reliability, always look to low-tech solutions.

Physical is infinitely better than online-only storefronts controlled by companies that have the legal monopoly on the files like Nintendo. The perfect choice is personal PC archival and torrent-seeding. Second-best from that is physical media, though eventually that medium will start having reading problems, breaking, experiencing data loss, and so on.
>>
>>727664901
Yep, everything we play is digital, how you store that information is entirely up to you. And you should never rely on people to store your data for you.
>>
I have a lot of old DS games laying around. Most of them now used in over 15 years. Does that actually mean they can randomly break? And to prevent this I have to put them in a DS and turn it on? (Havent had those on in easily over a decade too lol)

HD DVD's contamination issue wasn't due to the format, it was just an unfortunate consequence of one of the only supporters of the format having a contamination issue during the brief period it was relevant. it affected DVDs from that period, too.
i mean, HD DVD still was kind of a shit format, since blu-ray's larger capacity translated directly to higher quality video, and it had no major advantage to justify itself, but still.
