I'm reminded of a small trend on this site long, long ago about abandoned malls and making a game about the ambience and exploring a massive abandoned superstructure version.

I suggested the idea of a monster appearing halfway through the game, but was instantly shot down for ruining the original appeal. And thinking on it, I agreed.

Yeah the whole "subliminal" element is naturally averse to mass-market methods. A monster in those environments eliminates the feeling it's meant to impose. It works in images, short videos and maybe even tv shows/movies if it's done with intention, but giving the viewer base level engagement nullifies the emotion. Kids will buy shit because they're dumb, that's just a fact of life.

I've seen the concept executed decently well in the Oldest View, so I don't think the monster is necessarily a problem as much as the execution is. The key is to still have subtlety, mystery, and good suspense while including the monster.

Then again, from the start, that series wasn't about the endless megastructure, it was about a man being trapped in an unnatural yet familiar roach motel.

I get the argument for games, but analog horror more often than not is all about ARGs. Those are all about solving riddles, cryptography, obscure historical references, occult knowledge, and thinking critically. The last one I got into had people arguing over Cold War history, Gnosticism, alchemy, Hieronymous Bosch, and carcinogenic chemicals used in the making of plastics in the comment section.

The point of mascot horror is to sell toys. If the genre were more concerned with being scary, it mainly needs to concern itself with presentation. Fnaf is basically the only mascot horror game that actually succeeded at being scary, and all of its characters were ugly and off putting on purpose (barring a few exceptions). Fnaf fangames have come up with some genuinely disturbing designs. These probably don't look that scary here, but in their respective games they're horrific.
