I doubt the behavior has changed in recent years and I’m most certainly not playing the game, much less the shitty mine mode, to recreate it and see for myself. But in every mode matching 2 cubes clears every jewel.

Looking it up it does clear the board, so it might've been a bug in the mobile version I was playing at the time.
