Having a completely different development team try to recreate someone else's 20 year old project, with nobody to consult to understand the vision that created the original.
>>
>>727657917
You can't remake a game that has its own proprietary engine (this includes lighting and graphics rendering) in Unity or Unreal, no matter how many jeets you hire. It just won't work.

LOL

Tomorrow theme bros can't expand that picture

remakes are made so people that watch youtube video essays can get the experience of joining "the fandom" so things like art direction don't really need to be considered

Yes, that's right. Because you have no power to change things whatsoever, bitching accomplishes nothing, and games exist to be timewasting fun. They are products. Enjoy the products and then move on to the next product. You fucking faggot.

Whats the problem? The remake has more detail, more contrast and is sharpe- OH FUCK
>>
>>727663205
I'm no loremaster, but I think it probably had to do with the obscene bus width of the PS2's gpu. It was weird in that it had a tiny 4MB of VRAM, but it had a really wide bus between the CPU, RAM, and VRAM so stuff could be copied easily.

Though doing some reading, it may also have to do with the PS2's dedicated hardware anti aliasing, which it was able to do easily and very fast compared to PC hardware at the time (which the Xbox used).

>>727657917
Lighting is one of the most expensive part of rendering, and thus the part engine revamp the most often trying to get the best results for less processing.
Change engine, or even engine version, and lighting data will need to be entirely redone.
In itself, it wouldn't be a problem *if* engines were using sensical values for their light/reflection/etc.
Except they don't, every unity/curve/etc is fucking arbitrary, so you don't get the same result even with the same settings.
The cherry on top? Most good-looking game don't even *try* to have sensible lighting for art-direction purpose, so finding what the fuck exactly they did is generally an exercise in patience, trying random shit until you find an equivalent to the one weird combo of values the original artist used.

So when you throw that at a cheap studio with short deadlines, they just put every light/shadow/etc on default settings and call it a day.

There's not much secret, it's just that the PS2 has 48GB/s of video memory bandwidth, and it has to draw a tiny 512x448 picture.

The PS3 has 23GB/s to fill a 1280x720 in comparison.
It can use the shader registers etc to compensate for it, but in terms of "old school transparency" most systems don't have the same ratio of "number of pixels to fill vs memory bandwidth".

One thing they improved is that all other characters had better lip syncing, but some of the animation looked worse. Conker in this scene has way less fluid movement and expressions in the remake.

>>727674131
To play devils advocate:
the demake character models are far better than the original, they're closer to concept art and closer in tone with the game's goofiness. 2006 DR was limited by its jap developers not knowing how to translate that which had everyone looking like expressionless anime characters.
It failed with the odd and nonsensical balancing changes (not even survivor AI). Why does a thrown cash register delete half of a psycho's HP? Why are there dodge rolls? Checkpoints kill all tension and zombies don't react unless you're right in front of them. It IS a joke but not for it's visuals which were honestly very well done.
>>
>>727671751
You answered your own question yourself. Gamers are invested in the game enough to make an effort to understand. While the dev that has probably never truly enjoyed video game in xer life only cares about getting paid.

Also, being a game dev doesn't mean jackshit. You don't need to be a writer or a painter to understand the meaning behind the work.

The original graphics were pretty shit. Brad had this glare on his head that was just part of his texture. Cliff had a very low quality appearance that was on par with the survivors.
>>
>>727675282
Not only that but 2006 was absolutely mind blowing by the massive amounts of enemies you can see on a screen at one time back then when a PS2 would be brought down to a chugging mess if more than like a handful of high quality models were on screen of course there were tricks around this (Kingdom Hearts II 1000 heartless battle was a cool example) but yeah like sacrifices clearly needed to be made for each character that appeared with Frank and the Survivors incl.
>>
>>727660196
I mean it has a """film grain""""

It's just extremely dogshit compared to the original and basically only shows up as fuzz if you use HDR or high enough contrast. It's especially pronounced in the ME1 remake where the grain was so strong in the original.

You can but its incredibly difficult, Even music artists and film directors struggle with this despite advancing technology, almost every 2 takes of a scene or a recorded track won't be the same, so imagine that, with different people at the helm remaking something a small fraction of the people who made the original still work even there or are available give input on its remake, yeah. Only time ive seen stuff like this become successful are fan remakes of other vidya really and even those struggle to get it right.

speaking of this subject and this reactions image, what are people thoughts on the Black Mesa Remake for Half Life 1? I know its fan made or whatever but I never got the general consensus behind it from the old guard.
>>
>>727677615
Black Mesa is a lot more atmospheric than the original Half-Life, but you can tell in a lot of places that it's a mod project and not a professional one, especially with what they implemented for the new renderer and the fact that they killed MSAA to implement deferred lighting
Also the movement and combat are generally worse, especially against the HECU
>>
>>727677615
They shortened some levels that were a bit tedious (on a rail, the tentacle rocket bit) and extended other, equally annoying levels like the entirety of Xen. The only saving grace to Xen was that it was mercifully short, now it's like the last 3rd of the game in Black Mesa. Gameplay overall is...fine, some things were changed and I'm pretty sure OG Half Life's Normal is harder than Black Mesas by a bit. Game also has some strange bugs that can sometimes soft lock you and force you to load a previous save. I can guarantee the tram in On a Rail gets stuck on a gate section and refuse to move on the platform to go up and be stuck permanently and it's never been fixed to this day.

I'd still say play the original instead, because you can also play Opposing Force with it as well. Which is Half-Life but shorter and with generally better combat sections.
>>
>>727657917
The question is, do old games really need to be remade? Isn't a port just fine?

It’ll be full price, all the dialogue will be AI-generated sounding nonsense, and Sheogorath won’t even be fun anymore-probably just some generic wacky guy with reddit humor. Also you just know they're gonna gut the speech system and replace it with boring dialogue wheels. Bethesda hasn’t made anything that felt alive in over a decade, and they’re not gonna start now with a glorified texture pack.

The HEV Marines are still hitscanning little shits, but how much damage they do is directly related to the difficulty. The revolver, shotgun blast, and anything that instantly takes them out are still the go to method for killing them, but location damage means if you can consistently get headshots with the revolver you can get a lot of work out of it. If you mean the Alien Grunts, yeah, their hivehands still have insane tracking.

Beautification Effect, a term I just made up that means "The original artstyle will be forsook and defiled for the sake of showing off how COOL and POWERFUL and REALISTIC the new consoles can make a game look." The reason why this happens is either because console manufacturers demand it (Sony > Demons Souls Remaster) or the fact that the average gamer (see: not you) is an absolute sheep and says "nyeeeeeh" at the prospect of playing a game that released more than seven years ago. We're talking the kind of person that says "Things weren't good (x amount of years) years ago, you were just a kid at that time" without a hint of irony before fellating whatever remaster of the month releases despite playing nearly identically to the old game they said "wasn't that good." And in the case of remakes that completely change and/or fuck up the way the original game played, it's always "better" because obviously the game was never INTENDED to be played the way it originally released because (insert headcanon). These are the people that jacked off over the Resident Evil 2 remake because it didn't have tank controls, nevermind that games were advanced enough in that era that tank controls weren't a necessity for RE2 and that it was a completely intentional design choice, because that kind of person lacks the critical thinking that leads people to observe other games of that era. Again, this is the person that would rather pay $70 for the same game with murdered art direction instead of pirating the original, better game that the developers' company is actively trying to replace.

Remakes of Spyro and especially Crash. What used to be a cartoony game with defined shapes and stark colors became a glorified asset flip where everything looks a weird blend of stylized and realistic and the water and lightning effects alike look like muddy fog. Spyro had better art direction but in the modelling process most of the characters still end up looking like horrid bugeyed ETs.

Games look and run bad nowadays due to real time lighting and reflections. There aren't enough tech limitations anymore so devs can now get 80% of the way to realismslop and call it a day instead of coming up with creative styles and solutions for tech related issues.

Ocarina of Time is definitely the Jimi Hendrix experience of 3D gaming. Both revolutionized the landscapes they were part of and in the modern age it caused many arguments over how overhyped they are. Hendrix might have been great at guitar, but he wasn't always the best singer. He would constantly play out of tune, and he would get really high. But at the end of the day, I think people can find the charm in the imperfections of something good. Link and Hendrix are also left handed.
