>patch reduced file size from 150 GB to 22 GB
How the fuck?

swedish programming, they had to hand it to some danes to fix it.
>>
is this a gay station only thing?
>>
>>727663869
Consoles had smaller filesizes this whole time, but I think more like 40gb. Only pc had the 85% debloat.
>>
They were using industry data that said that HDDs increase loadtime for anywhere from 10% to 5x from SSD, so to compensate they duplicated all the assets multiple times to reduce loadtime at the cost of space efficiency.

Eventually due to feature creep they realized they needed outside help and partnered with another studio to optimize the game. This studio provided empirical data that stated that loadtime on HDDs was actually just a few seconds more, not the 10%/5x they had assumed, and that was an acceptable tradeoff, so they deleted all the asset duplication and rolled it out in an update.
>>
>>727663869
no
>>
>>727663754
Then they added a 10GB patch that took longer to install then re downloading the entire game. What the fuck is wrong with them.
>>
>>727663945
Honestly even if the loadtimes were significantly longer I'd rather have loadtimes than a 150 GB game.
>>
>>727663945
Wild that Arrowhead never actually tested the load times, just assumed they were right and then publicly defended the decision. Swedish devs pull this shit so often.

>the only reason this dogshit game was even at 150gb was because the devs kept 3 copies of each game asset in the download for 2 years

>>727663995
Some of that loading comes in the form of pop-in. Dropping into a game and invis textures till they load

Why?

>Games always been 30GB on PS5
>Had to go to Sony studio to get help
>>
>>727664408
Well, yeah. The PS5 uses the same parts every time, so they can expect what will work on it and didn't need to account for a range of hard drives and GPUs. This whole thing is because some people still use hard drives instead of solid state drives, so they had to account for that.

more accurately it's the only success of their big live service push of the last few years. They explicitly named a bunch back in like 2023 and of those Helldivers 2 is the only one that 1) came out at all and 2) is still running and somewhat alive.
>>
>>727663754
They cut out the size of my helldiver's magnum dong.
>>
>>727663754
A lot of shitty developers artificially inflate file sizes to discourage pirating.
>>
>>727666798
I heard it was to hoard space and deter people from downloading more games. It makes sense when you realize Call of Duty is like 250GB just for MP plus Warzone.

>>727663945

>>
>>727664354
Not him but I'm suffering due to lack of space.
>>
>>727666897
It certainly does have the side effect of discouraging piracy, considering every time you want to update the game you have to download the entire game again whereas if you buy it you can just get the patch. Although this particular game is online only and thus impossible to pirate so I don't think it applies here.

>>727663754
the """fix""" is just the most simple type of deduplication, game dev retards almost never use deduplication, they just slap oodle kraken on a game and pray it fixes the size and dont care about the amount of duplicate data and stuff
worst offender is arc survival evolved, without dedup its 500gigs, with its like 60gigs iirc
>>

>>727669112

>>
>>727668691
It's not slave imports that are fucking the Swedish workforce (If you have an education and a drivers license), it's the extremely insular way people act which turns work politics into a massive incestuous affair between everyone involved where who you know is the only thing that matters when getting a job that pays more than 10 bucks an hour, it's also what is creating a MASSIVE braindrain in every sector currently because the people with actual experience and knowledge refuse to actually teach anyone who doesn't have it so as soon as they leave a company or retire those things are essentially lost forever.

What is even more frustrating is that Swedish society is entirely two-faced, you have honest to god retards who think that an open border is the end-goal for Swedish society while acting exactly like how I just described, they WANT people to come over and join in but only if they never have to actually interact with them in any way whatsoever. How do I know this? The answer should be obvious I was born here.
>>
>>727664620
>Horizon
It's the most artificially inflated "Success" on the market, I've never met a single person that actually talks about it or has ever even played it, the fact that indie games on PS4/5 beat it in sales should tell you that the IP is entirely propped up by marketing alone.
>>
>>727663994
And it still crashes like crazy.
>>
>>727663754
probably the same as every game like 90% of the filesize is uncompressed cutscene video or something
if you've been pirating you've known this for decades the biggest quality improvment pirate game providers added was compressing the game videos

across other games most bloat is >>727663945
they import a given asset into two game levels and then it appears in the game files twice+ instead of having a smart system. most games can probably cut their filesize by half at least if they gave it a bit of effort

the worst part is I'm sure a majority of the playerbase has SSDs and would be glad to put the game on it because it literally just makes it run better but cant because of optimizations made for HDDs that don't even do anything. Now I wanna know how many other games are doing this shit.
>>
>>727663945
This thing with duplicated data to reduce load times is just a convenient excuse. It's the industry standard because some exec once said "hey wait a second if our game is 200GB then the consumer can install fewer competing products"

Not true in Helldivers case, they were just duplicating general files because they're retarded. One example of that though is Halo Infinite, the credits (a basic black background with white text) is a 2GB video file for some strange reason.

Actually, people just make portable versions now, so you just need to recheck files in utorrent after an update.

>>
>>727679189
The companies themselves are bloated. You know what they say about too many cooks in the kitchen. There are always way more people working on games than necessary. A good chunk of them being DEI and jeets. Only a handful of people are doing the actual work and only that handful is really needed.

Anyone still using that technology in the current year doesn't deserve to have games optimised for them anymore. Let them suffer long loading times.
>>
>>727663754
companies fell for the "compression is le bad" meme and are finally realizing if their algorithms pajeet coding are bad then it hurts performance more than compression, which increases load times on hdd by like 1-3 seconds compared to no compression

>>
>>727681378
I remember way back when SSDs were new there was a lot of anti-SSD propaganda that said something along the same lines about them wearing out quickly, it's crazy to see people still repeating it all these years later. But I guess those are the people who still use HDDs as their main drive in 2025.
>>
>>727681857
SSD's do wear out faster than HDD's if you're constantly read/writing. Not as drastically as people say but it is something to be aware of.
Which is why a combo is the best.
SSD for speed. HDD for endurance.

SSD for games and programs that need to load fast.
HDD for everything else.

>b-but SSDs wear out fast!
Most 500gb SSDS will last 100TB of writing. This number increases the larger the SSD, and can be significantly better based on the brand/model.
>b-but cold storage!
Agreed, you shouldn't use SSDs for long-term cold storage. Why the fuck would you do that in the first place though? HDDs will also die over long-term cold storage too; run a backup storage/NAS in RAID6 if you want to be as (practically) safe as possible.

Over a 5 year period, SSDs have a 0.58% failure rate per-year. Over the same time, HDDs have a 1.7% failure rate in year 1, and that increases over time, up to 8.6% in year 3.

SSDs are superior to HDDs in basically every way other than cold storage, data recovery, and $-per-gb; but these are all things more relevant for a NAS or media/storage drive that you wouldn't use an SSD for anyway.

It's 2025 and these turds can't figure out how to stream in few assets in game what uses procedurally created maps, eg. it's pasting a set of pre-defined assets on map.
These are not even handmade levels in which every asset and location is unique (like GTAV for example).
>>
>>727663838
yes, they had to get inside and take him out, that's why it took so long

It was the devs having compatibility with the absolute bottom of the barrel HDD's based on supposedly reliable industry expert data.
Turns out they didn't need to go quite so hard so they stopped.
>>
the devs had duplicated the game assets repeatedly bloating up the install footprint, and claimed it was because of MUH PC HDDs! not surprising Snoy console devs don't know how computers work or how incredibly stupid that explanation was
>>
>>727684674
What I don't understand is why they bend over backwards to support HDDs but apparently continuing to support Windows 7 is too far.
>>
>>727664354
Simply put, not everyone plays every game every day. Having to keep a 150gb game you only want to play sometimes installed is severely off putting. And if you uninstall it, reinstalling might also be off putting if you know you won't be playing that long. Having to continually install/uninstall stuff gets annoying, so at some point you don't bother, and they lose players.
>>
>>727680948
nigga ssd is a decade old tech at this point you can get some real cheap
>>
>>727684786
very odd comparison.
>>
>>727684425
Statistically, SSDs have an annual fail rate 10x lower than HDDs
>>
>>727685054
How so? Some of the HDDs they're still catering to are probably still older than Windows 7 at this point. W7 was really good and I wish I could have continued to use it but eventually games stopped supporting it.
>>
>>727685129
Because HDD's are hardware and WIn7 is software?
>>
>>727685056
ahahahahaha
>>
>>727684929
This is actually a big reason I tend to play indie games more often. Most of them are a couple GB at most so you can fit dozens of them in the space it would take for a 150 GB game. Then I can go back and forth between them at my leisure, leave it on my computer and come back to it years later without having to reinstall it, etc.
>>
>>727685209
Nigger this isn't debatable, you have the internet, go ahead and find out yourself. HDDs are still the only real choice for serious storage, but when it comes to your OS and any video games or other programs you want to load fast, there is no downside to SSDs other than price - and even then a good 1tb NVMe SSD costs less than a new-release AAA game anyway
>>
>>727663838
Yeah, he managed to breach their going into games machine. Never trust a jeet
>>
>>727664354
At 150gb, when I'm done playing a game I'm uninstalling that shit for space to install other games
At 22gb I'll keep it installed until things get really bad
>>
>>727685183
How does that answer my question?
