Why isn't Linux popular for gaming?'PC gaming' pretty much means Windows.
because most gamers play online competitive games or have nvidia gpus
Because Linux spent many many years of being utterly incompetent when it comes to gaming. When people were just playing games on Windows, Linux faggots had to cope with glitches, poor performance, no audio and having to jump through hoops just to get anything better than Super Tux running. Even in the recent years people got chased away by being told they'd have to tinker to get a similiar level to windows for their games or being unable to play anything with anticheat.Linux first actually needs to prove itself as completely reliable and easy to use for a couple years more before its old reputation disappears.
all i know about linux was the fat guy in linus techtips who would talk about it from time to time and then that same person would later go on and become a tranny.
>>727670625Because there's games you can't play on Linux. It's literally that simple. Why would you purposely use a platform that limits the amount of games you can play when compared to Windows which unless you're a turboautist, you have.Linux is a better development environment than Windows but Windows is a better gaming environment.
It's leftist communist propaganda where all software is forced to be "free" and "open" while respecting the "code of conduct" which says men can become women.

>>727670809>Linux spent many many years of being utterly incompetent when it comes to gamingThat is a bizarre way to say "developers did not support linux at the time"The software is made for the OS, not the other way around
It's getting there
>>727670625>nvidia has 97% market share on gpus>linux shits the bed with nvidia gpus>even when it 'just werks' it actually takes hours of tinkering and googling bullshit just to get it to work before the next update breaks everything again.Go fucking figure why no one wants to waste their time with this tranny OS.

Because>only relatively recently wine/proton started to become more mainstream and actually very competent, Valve with steam deck helped a lot but it's still fairly recent>some games are still not playable due to intrusive anti cheats, unfortunately a lot of popular games like Fortnite or Riot games are not playable on Linux (and I've heard even using VM solutions won't work but I'm not sure about that)>most people already have windows, a lot of shit is preinstalled with it, most consumers aren't going to be interested in switching over without a good reason>switching to a Linux distro is a bit of a learning curve, while there are distros aim to make it easy for anyone used to Windows, you're still going to have to learn new terminology, figure out how to do shit, etc. This isn't hard if you're comfortable with PCs, but the average consumer is notIt is growing slowly and I think it's important for it to always be available as a fallback option in case Microsoft goes even more insane, but there are legitimate reasons why people would prefer to stick with windows. I do like using Linux but it absolutely should not be a surprise to anyone on why it'll never be as popular as Windows. And that's fine, it doesn't need to be.
I'm mainly surprised how smooth wine/proton is with the Steam deck. Like even playing some niche doujin games it worked perfectly.
Nothing works

Why does he cause so much seething on /v/?
>>727670625Because normalfag acceptance is based almost entirely on perceived social acceptance multiplied by media saturation. There is no way to produce marketing for Linux that looks good, because normalfags will not realize that it is Linux, or if they do then they will not make the effort to install it.A major problem is that any default Linux is going to be some retarded and corporate Ubuntu or Fedora flavor that is inherently repulsive when consoomed with full defaults.>>727670809It's been years since it has become mostly acceptable for everything. In 3 years it will have been a decade since proton made most things trivial to run.>>727671712>Rito games doesn't workThe only good versions of league run on Linux.
While linux got much better than say, 4 or 5 years ago compatibility wise, there's still some games that won't work on it. Games are developed with Windows in mind as a platform. Graphics hardware is designed for Windows to handle. If we're talking exclusively about games, Windows plays 100% of them. It's been a long time since Apple gave a shit. Also, Windows allows for some intrusive nonsense. You can't manipulate the kernel in the same way you would on linux, being more restricted gives online multiplayer game devs some peace of mind thinking "well the user doesn't have enough control over his system to be able to cheat".Valve is trying to pull in more support by creating a bridge between console and PC gaming with SteamOS. Since they don't sell their hardware in retail stores and the desktop parts are still a bit rough, it will take a while until they achieve what they want, which is to pull people away from Windows as the primary gaming platform.Another thing is, Windows covers different bases better than Linux. While over the years Linux has gotten much better at becoming a gaming compatible OS, the same cannot be said about office suites/graphics editing and some other production tools. Most of these target both Windows and macOS, but even getting them to partially run on linux is a nightmare, and their developers are still either vehemently against supporting Linux as a platform or "considering it". I legitimately thought the opposite would happen, since Linux users used to be very proud of their platform not being for entertainment but for "serious shit", but Windows and macOS are still the main platform for most people who just use their computer as a tool to produce something other than code, and they -will- pay the big bucks for it.
>>727672160We even got 32-bit PhysX back for Nvidia. That's great for the two guys who play those games.
>>727673103>If we're talking exclusively about games, Windows plays 100% of themNot really. A lot of games will need fixes and mods, simply because current hardware and software is not the same as what they were released on.>I legitimately thought the opposite would happen, since Linux users used to be very proud of their platform not being for entertainment but for "serious shit", but Windows and macOS are still the main platform for most people who just use their computer as a tool to produce something other than code, and they -will- pay the big bucks for it.The problem is that a Windows or MacOS user will semi-reliably save their file in a proprietary format, save to the cloud or just generally stick to the recommended workflow that they were likely taught in school on their student license malware. That keeps them in the ecosystem and makes collaborating with them harder, because you also need to be in the ecosystem, so it just makes sense for schools to keep teaching it, for companies to keep buying into licensing schemes and for them to keep requiring it as a pre-requisite.As soon as you start introducing Linux, you create someone who will just want their thing to work the way they want it to work and the whole ecosystem of every company and school needing to license and teach it falls apart.
Linux got good for servers because the moneyed interest contributed heavily to its development.Linux is starting to get good for gaming because a moneyed interest started shaping it seriously for gaming.
Windows racing wheel drivers:>run install.exe>click next>play gameLinux racing wheel drivers:>install git>clone some random bumfuck community made driver repo>install kernel developer packages>run the script that's supposed compile and install it all for you>it doesn't work>now you blobs all over your fucking system and you have to unfuck what it did>compile it all manually>move files around into system directories>have to learn what the fuck dkms is and does so your drivers don't fucking break the next time you update your kernel>have to fucking reboot and pray>still doesn't work but it turns out its a fucking proton / game issue>turns out force feedback is fucked on linux anyway

linux's openness and freedom can be be detrimental for less knowledgable users, imo. like on apple devices(and consoles), everyone has the same hardware, same software, and the same UI so it's easier to develop software optimised for them and when it breaks down it's very easy to pinpoint the problem and fix itlinux, while giving users more freedom, has way too much variety, everyone has different kernels and firmware etc. this why there's less malware on linux btw.that's why i think bazzite and steam os are future of linux, because it's hard to tinker and has less updates, there's a fixed standardwindows has been the de facto OS for so long so every software is designed with windows in mind, and people are just used to it. MS could make an unusable broken ass shit and it still won't still kill the company
Damn didn't know linus was such a fag, hope he repents before going to hell

>>727673479>Not really. A lot of games will need fixes and mods, simply because current hardware and software is not the same as what they were released on.So do they on linux. The small fraction of games that won't work on windows, work with the same wrappers or a compatibility layer that Linux needs to get them to run. If I want to run Tomb Raider Anniversary, I need the same fixes through Proton I do on Windows. Microsoft is not at fault because Rockstar decided to do very stupid things in the past with PC ports.>As soon as you start introducing Linux, you create someone who will just want their thing to work the way they want it to work and the whole ecosystem of every company and school needing to license and teach it falls apart. That would be true if you had equal or superior functionality through alternative open software solutions. It is a big ask to have a gorillion professionals that spent a good amount of time trying to understand how to get where they are to suddenly just forget all about it and start anew, making their work much slower because some open source developer decided to rename a tool on a whim rather than follow what's called industry standards. There is no effort to adhere to people who are trying to get their job done already, only to help new users that can't afford certain software solutions. In other words, "you can't do shit because you won't put your money where your mouth is".
