No, this is not a replacement for XIV since XVII is going for a different audience. It will have a story-based MSQ but the focus of the game is going to be much more sandbox with players capturing nodes out in the world to develop, which will build up new towns (which can evolve into cities) and unlock dungeons and trials. There will be PvP servers where players compete over which nodes to activate, and hunt down other free companies with bounties placed on them. The goal is to have face-paced player-driven content you will see quickly into making your character (IE no more ‘it gets good in 1000 hours’) while still supplying story JRPG-style content for Final Fantasy fans. Expect to see the same types of playable races you saw in XI and XIV. XVII is a lot more urban-themed, so much more inspired by VII, VIII, the intro to X, X-2, and XV. Less distinction between hand/land disciples and war/magic disciples. Can easily play the whole game as a merchant, craft, or entertainer (even competing in a form of PvP to become the top “idol band”). Too early to say how but they’ve already exercised their rights to use some shit from Kingdom Hearts, though not sure if it will be an early cross-over or integrated into the story.
