I get it, I found combat awkward at first and still think it needs better tactical controls for party members so the ai doesn't charge in and suicide (even while using formations they still break ranks and get themselves hit). Should be able to individually move/station characters and give them basic commands like hold/engage/cast spell on sight.

I didn't realize H&J used to be Whalenought, I played Mechajammer and that game was a huge disappointment. Great concept and vibe with lots of promise but abandoned janky and incomplete. Makes sense why they changed their studio name as well as why the quit on Mechajammer (I assume to work on this project which they seem passionate about). I'm not stoked on that history but at least they seem more committed to fleshing out BfF

Problem was they really couldn't settle on what Mechajammer was supposed to b. It's definitely a janky, one of a kind game. Whereas Serpent in the Staglands is more familiar CRPG fare.

Yes it's a bit like VATS mode in Fallout, combat happens in real time but you pause to target attacks or cast spells. You have a bar that works kind of like action points, each character can act each time their bar fills up. There's no mouse click attack in real time because your basic attack is on this cooldown.

I find it interesting parties and formations are largely unexplored in Diablo style games. Only Throne of Darkness comes to mind and you controlled four characters there.

The other issue with combat = while you are controlling party member B, party member A's AI is running around like a chicken undoing the positioning you just had them do and getting knocked unconscious. The only positioning control for the AI is a rally point for the entire party, hopefully they improve on this.

Never played this but looking now I think banquet definitely took influence from their use of camera angles to make areas and fights feel more cinematic, also sort of like the fixed camera in Grim Fandango and similar titles

Played the demo a few months back and got fucking destroyed by some shaman dudes not far from the camp. It has a really cool artstyle, the combat system's neat and I like how there're a lot of combat manuevers like grappling, tackling and pinning instead of just do X more damage.
