You get hit once, and the short recovery windows allow the hordes of enemies juggle you until you die or fall into a pit. Did people regularly beat games like this back them or was it a rarity?

It's funny how this game is only hard on your first playthrough, after you beat it once it becomes a walk in the park.

It wasn't unusual for kids to get stuck in games and never be able to complete them. People had a different attitude towards difficulty at the time, and generally didn't start crying about "bad game design" and "artificial difficulty" if they sucked.

NG1 is fun but also very rough in a lot of places. Try NG2, it's more forgiving, even if some stage mecahnics are more of a pain in the ass
