I always had the same problems
>barely enough people to keep status quo, can't expand easily sometimes
>don't have resources to trade because I need all of them
>if someone decides to attack I'm fucked because I need trained soldiers, armor, weapons which is expensive/requires 150% of your population working on it

the fact that those are the two best things you can come up with is absolutely grim for the game

Fair, I had the same reaction at first-looked like another janky indie Eurojank sim with awful UI and maybe two working systems. But after a couple hours I was actually impressed. The game ramps up chaos fast: food riots, racial tensions, neighboring kingdoms trying to diplomatically backstab you the second you manage to get plumbing.

Latest update added necromancy trees so now my capital is a plague-ridden death cult with zombie miners and animated golem farmers. Still haven't figured out how to stop the elves from forming uprisings every 3 seasons though. Maybe letting them have "culture" was a mistake.

TL;DR: it’s rough, unpolished, and mean as hell-like old Dwarf Fortress meets Majesty-but actually has soul. Worth checking out just to see how badly your utopia goes to shit by year three.
