Are there any games that implemented this correctly? Or so that it doesn't seem strange?
>>
>>727718768
It's even better when it's a written note, I just love the idea of someone frantically writing
>OH GOD THEY FOUND ME
instead of running for their lives or at least writing down something important.
it actually improves the experience

Infra did a barely passable job of it because there are only a small handful, they’re all in bunkers/campsites where someone has obviously been staying, and he’s canonically recording the story with the intent to break it to the media so it make some sense why he’d be narrating.

It’s a little bit stupid that he’d leave behind individual tape recorders everywhere with the tapes inside, rather than you just, for example, finding casettes and playing them on your own hardware, but at least in terms of the audio logs existing it’s not fully retarded.

>Day1. We arrived at the station. Terrible weather. Jhonson went down with a fewer and we pray for fast recovery.
>Day 3. Radio is broken. We got a traitor in our midst and I have no idea who.
>Day 5. Rations and morale are running low. Jhonson is getting worse. The medic said he might not make it if we don't get him to a hospital soon. How could we do that? We're stranded in the middle of nowhere!
>Day 7. Jhonson died today. We buried him near the docks.
>Day 10. A mutiny! I hid the heavy weapons in a locker near the Alpha section, the combination is 9142... WAIT THEY'RE BREAKING IN TAKE POSITIONS *the rest of the message is unreadable*

95% of the time these are in sci-fi games, so why not have it so instead of finding a physical log that someone took down, it's like recorded data that someone's phone or other personal device picked up. Like if not a call to someone else, then just their phone (or sci-fi equivalent) recording them talking without their knowledge. Kind of playing on the idea where people are always saying their cell phone is listening to their conversation to determine what ads to play,
>>
>>727724602
That would require thinking and planning to pull off.

I cannot believe I’ve never seen a comedy game do audio logs which turn out to be totally unrelated to the game’s story and end up resolving themselves handily without giving the player any useful information whatsoever.

Not the same. The audio logs are hilarious in that game but they’re taking the piss with Witness’ audio logs, that were just random quotes that seemed profound (except the abandoned hint board but that’s just a character who happens to be a wall panel). It wasn’t like, a Bioshock audio log series where off-screen characters are narrating a plot thread from the past.

I prefer it when Fallout has the terminal logs because i can read much faster and i get bored listening.
I usually cut dialogue short if theres a text box becuz im not sitting around waiting for the VA to finish speaking

Is there a game with a booby-trapped audio log, like the cassette is filled with C4 and blows your character's hand off when they press Play?

Maybe it was the masterwork of the dead security guard who put that epic dialogue down on his desk just before he got nuked.
The deepest environmental storytelling, he was an aspiring script writer.

It’s not awful; it’s (presumably) two characters communicating silently by writing on paper? It’s really only the “no” at the end that’s unfitting

True, that's what kills the rest of it, as if a third party was transcribing it.
