Sure they kept the "characters" but only for gacha sake as they are weird clones/engrams of the original characters. The only reason they went the direction they did with endfield is to have a clean slate for whatever 20 years of live service bullshit they are planning.

They could have just created a spin off somewhere between the acts that have already finished, and create whole new characters instead of the whole thing they are doing now. I can respect GFL 2 effort's in creating a continuation, but what Hypergryph is doing with the new arknights game kinda feels lazy. My interests went from 100% to zero when I found out how its not going to be related at all to anything that has happened or is going on, I like arknights for its world and story.
