Just today I have been at a Smash tournament, and I won't lie:

I have never seen that many ugly troons in one place before.
Ever.
Not even at the same event pre-covid.

Also, for some reason the other room smelled like boiled milk.
I have no idea why.

trooning out really took off after covid. You'd think it was pre-planned or something.

Back in like 07 the card shop I used to go to with my friend and his brother/brother's friend did a tournament for Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3 or 4. There were like, 40 people, anywhere from 10 year olds to early 30s old fashioned greasy weebs. My friend ended up winning and won a booster box of the old Naruto TCG set, but it wasn't a bracket based situation and rather a round-robin style, and just whoever won the most games won the whole thing. In the 3rd to last round I faced the guy who was currently leading in both of our last matches and beat him 2-1, which brought him down to my friend's score, but since my friend beat him earlier he had the tiebreaker and won. I ended up coming like 5th or 7th or some shit overall and only ended up getting like 5 booster packs, but it was still a memorable experience all the same.

I used to go to Everquest Fan Faire back when EQ2 was still alive.

I've met some of my best friends and had some of the greatest times of my life at Melee/Project M/Street Fighter tournaments. If you have the passion for a fighting game, I highly recommend going to an irl event.
The only other irl vidya events I've been to are game rooms at anime cons. It's cool to play a bunch of imported arcade cabs and japanese only rhythm games, but it's definitely not worth the price if you're only there for the games.

Went to my first one last year. I dont really know what I expected. They had a House of the Dead machine that wasn't calibrated at all. There was a Smash Bros tournament going on and everybody was super hyped but not my thing. There was a super hot really tall Rosalina cosplayer, I remember that. Got decent deals on a couple rare Xbox 360 games.

Not worth the 2 hour drive really.
