>boat segment is... le bad!
hmm yes very interesting opinion unfortunately its completely fucking wrong
>>
>>727733562
people are seething here every day about walk and talk sections in modern games but this (a fucking boat with shit controls) is somehow superior?
>>
>>727733562
Going fast is fun. I don't get what the problem is.

It's fine, it's just that Source movement is so good and it's a bummer to be stripped from it, well, if you play the way intended, that is.

Anyway, anyone played the newest version of the Overcharged mod?

Correct.
For starters, it's fully interactive, has lots of secrets to discover, and enemies to kill.

TLOU style walk n chat segments are literally cutscenes masquerading as "gameplay".

The Highway 17 is also one of the best parts of HL2.
Also, the controls are perfectly fine.
>>
The boat segment is unironically contender for best part of the game. Driving the boat is fun, but the parts where you need to get off the boat in this segment are kino.
>>
>>727733562
wait people hate the boat segment?
>>
Why was this glorified tech demo heralded as one of the greatest games of all time by millennials anyways
>>
>>727734465
a lot of retards hate the vehicle sections believe it or not yes.
>>
>>727734301
>TLOU style walk n chat segments
HL2 invented the entire concept of locking you in a room with literally nothing to do while people talk.
>>
boat n buggy are fun but i want the weapons in my inventory.

REFLECTIONS? WHAT? HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE IN 2004?
>>
>>727734830
yeah and they fucking suck in hl2 also. i will say they were at least novel and impressive back in 2004 unlike modernslop, but its def the worst part of the game now.
>>
>>727733562
the only time i played this game on xbox 360 i specifically remember having fun on this part
>>
recently replayed FEAR and it mogs this POS game so hard it's insane
>>
>>727734830
Not true. There were typically physics objects you could fuck with.

>FEARtrannies with their inferiority complex again
how many vehicle sections did FEAR have?
>>
>>727736350
this is a really important point, you can still move around at your own fucking leisure. TLOU will force walk you
>>
>>727736662
exactly as many as it needed, tranime-kun.
>>
>>727733893
Serious question. Do you ever miss having a penis?
>>
>>727736206
they both had good multiplayer but hl2 had way more custom maps
>>
>>727733562
dafuq? people said the boat segment was bad? it made it feel like a grand adventure. like you're in huckleberry Finn or some shit
>>
>>727733562
>very interesting opinion unfortunately its completely fucking wrong
Interesting opinion, unfortunately you made a minor grammatical error.
>>
Some people are just naturally bad at vehicle sections. Whether it's the boat in Half Life, the Mako in Mass Effect, the VTOL in Crysis, whatever, they just suck at controlling anything greater than themselves. God did not give them the blessing to interface with vehicles.

>>727733562
it's fun in vr
>>
>>727734762
It was that insane of a tech leap.
>>
I love both the boat and buggy sections. I also like EP2 better than EP1 for that reason.
>>
>>727733562
It's 30% longer than it should be
>>
>>727733562
I agree. Fuck Civvie11 and anyone else who disagrees, they're wrong.

Loved the atmosphere of cruising around in the boat (and the buggy), and then hopping out and exploring the occasional optional side area (like the picrel boathouse at the start of the section, where you see the Gman briefly).

Even if the payoff was usually just a headcrab jumpscare or two and some basic loot like ammo/health. Occasionally you'd find something neato too (like the all knowing vort).

The sections felt incredibly immersive and were both visually and technically impressive, at the time, and gave the game a sense of scale that a simple "cutscene of Freeman riding off on a boat and arriving at Black Mesa East" wouldn't have even remotely replaced.

I, too, play War Thunder in the top 0.01% and dunk on weak meatbags who cannot interface their pitiful reflexes with the blessed essence of the machine spirit, as we have learned to do.
>>
>>727734830
>nothing to do
Almost any time you get locked anywhere, there's shit to read, physically fuck around with, and otherwise interact with.

It's not as great in environmental detail as some modern titles obviously, and the physics aren't as impressive today, but if you couldn't entertain yourself in Kliener or Eli's lab for the duration of their exchanges, then you and I can't relate.
>>
>>727737196
Quit bringing up your fetish wherever you go, faggot.
>>
>>727733562
its pretty much the only part i remember of hl2 so i guess it was good
>>
>>727733893
source movement is not as good as goldsrc movement though
>>
>>727735041

Planar reflections or render to texture.
>>
>>727733562
indeed, the boat section of that game is far worse than simply 'bad'
>>
>>727733562
I love the reflections and sunset in this level.
>>
>>727736206
I played both and liked them. FEAR has better gunplay but the game suffers from the repetitive corridor structure.

Yes, but how do we all feel about the "vehicle" level (if you can even call it that) from Half-Life 1? Personally I don't mind it.
>>
>>727736206
Fear certainly had better gameplay, but HL2 had a more interesting setting, characters, and markedly superior level design (I've played a lot of mods with more interesting levels than Fear has... I don't even remember any particular area vividly, it was all just empty industrial area hallways and offices).
>>
>>727745015
I love On A Rail, but I wouldn't consider it a vehicle level
>>
>>727740951
This isn't really "pick a path" as much as it is "pick 2 out of 3"
>>
>>727733562
I hated the vehicle levels when I first played the game but now they're one of my favorite parts. I don't know why that is.
>>
>>727733562
I never understood the hate for the vehicle sections. Honestly thought both of them were really fun and I still enjoy these parts on replays. Though I get that people don't like forced genre shifts mid-game.
>>
>>727734762
It's pretty disingenuous to say that Half-Life 2 isn't a fully realized game.
>>
>>727745015
Honestly I think it's one of the best levels in the game.
>>
>>727746154
The problem with the vehicle levels is the combat finally opens up where you have multiple weapon options, however it gets cut short due to 1/3rd of the game being vehicle fuckery. Arguably the best part of the game is the civilian uprising section.

The last bit of the game is even more stupid with the grav-gun going into overdrive and making turning it into a spam left click right click fest.
>>
>>727733562
airboat was way better than the buggy
casuals just couldn't handle the movement and controls
>>
>>727746154
I think it's due to the exploration aspect that comes with these sections. They're completely optional, but people felt obligated to stop and search because they instinctively wanted to see what's in the level. And all they got is a bunch of dilapidated houses and maybe some ammo crates with nothing interesting happening.
>>
>>727733562
I don’t hate the boat itself, it’s just that the start of HL2 just sucks in general. Valve trickled down the weapons very slowly and there’s no enemy variety.
>>
>>727733562
it has exactly 1 good sequence, which is not the helicopter bossfight (which is one of the worst and most boring bossfights of all time in any genre)
it's a NEAT level but it's not GOOD
>>
>>727734465
>boat sections bad
>car sections bad
>hl1 Xen bad
Going online for the first time and reading people's (wrong) opinions made me immediately jaded about internet as a kid
