i never played any yugioh cards irl
can you just set the card face down in attack position, then declare an attack which would mean you "flip" it and then activate the effect? or do you have to set it face down in defense and wait for your opponent to attack it?
>>
>>727737627
only face down defense position
when the opponent attacks it flips and activates its effect, or you can flip it into attack mode on your next turn after placing it to activate

>>
>>727737627
You can either play it face up attack position or play it face down defense position, which is "setting" it. If you switch it from face down defense to attack you gotta flip it over, which activates its effect. If it gets attacked while face down it gets flipped too, which activates its effect.

When you attack a face down card, it flips up, and the flip effect activates before the monster would be destroyed. Unless you have cards that can destroy face down monsters without flipping them. But at the start of the TCG, there wasn't anything you could about morphing jar or maneater.
Obvious there is ways of doing this now but these are some old old cards. Nowadays this is nothing special because destruction effects are everywhere and morph jar is banned.

>This monster is a "Millennium" counterpart of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon"
>This monster is based on the fourth copy of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" owned by Sugoroku Mutou in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and anime.
>This monster's name and second effect to prevent its control from being switched references Sugoroku Mutou's speech to Seto Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel 9: "The Cards with Teeth (Part 1)" when the former refused to sell his copy of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" to the latter because of its sentimental value. Sugoroku proceeded to tell Kaiba that if he treasured something, it would grow a heart its own, including his copy of the "Blue-Eyes White Dragon".
>This monster's TCG name is a reference to the Heart of the Cards philosophy mentioned by Sugoroku in those scenes.
>This monster's third effect references a scene in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel 10: "The Cards with Teeth (Part 2)", where Sugoroku's copy of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" (a Level 8 monster with 3000 ATK), which was stolen by Seto Kaiba and used in his Duel against Dark Yugi, refused to attack and destroyed itself. Dark Yugi then Special Summoned that copy of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from Kaiba's Graveyard with "Monster Reborn", as part of his winning move.
>This card's artwork is taken from the aforementioned chapter, specifically from the panel showing "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" being Special Summoned to Dark Yugi's field.
>This effect being activated only once per Duel references the fact that Sugoroku only had one copy of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon".

>2005 was 20 years ago
Yugioh has evolved a lot through the years, so there are players playing (and optimizing) snapshots of yugioh through time.
The most populars are:
>2005: goat format
>2010: edison format
>2014:hat format
Goat format is the easiest to get into, edison is a bit faster and has real combos and synchro summons, and hat format is even faster and includes xyz summons.
If you want to plain get into the modern, current day format, there is no alternative but to watch youtube guides on the basics and/or going to your local tcg shop and convince someone to teach you to play
(Dont buy anything at first. You will likely get scammed)

It's not that hard. Just takes time and patience. It's not worth it though; the game is quite awful now. It's power-crept to the point of being extraordinarily boring. IMO Goat and Edison are actually fun but YMMV and they have their own issues.

depends on what you want.
-Old Era: 2006 World Championship/Nightmare Troubadour
-GX Era: Tag Force 3
-5d's Era: 2011 World Championship/Tag Force 6
-Zexal Era: Duel Carnival Japanese

Tag Force Special just happens to have a lot of cards but as a Tag Force game it lacks quite on the side of presentation. Otherwise it would be the most complete handheld game up to the start of the Arc-V era. Anything else is just pure personal preference, like GX Duel Academy or the GX DS games having some of the school simulation aspects or the older RPG style DM games like Reshef.

>How does one even come back into this?
You search the card you liked the most from back then, it 100% has a theme made on its image and try to play that for a while. You do not really need to learn systems you don't care about at the start of returning. Play one of the 2010s era games. Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolution is the most complete solo game and it has a mode where it builds the deck in the image of the anime characters for you to learn. Master Duel Solo Gates serve as a good introduction to mechanics and themes in the official simulator. If even after all of that it doesn't click with you, search one of the plenty communities that support an older era of the game and play with them. Even if after doing that you do not like the game after 20 years, don't force it.

The closest to that that will happen is that starting next year they will implement those out of frame artworks from Rush Duels into OCG/TCG or something similar with a rarity called Overframe. Needs better support, unironically. Ultimate Spirit, Sifr, and pass isn't good enough.
Needs to be able to stop your opponent from tributing, using super poly, and to get to a negate before your opponent can nib you.
Also needs some graveyard effects.
The majority of its archetype is useless.

cont.
In the original GameBoy games there's tons of credits of people that were just magazine readers that submitted their artwork for random monsters by mail because at the time they did a contest to gather designs. Even then the original designs sent by people and the final versions aren't exactly the same artwork. Just the idea or concept.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_24y5IwOS80
This video goes on with one such designer. They reveal that among the 350 cards in the first gameboy game, substracting the originals from the manga, 200 credits=200 extra cards that are original for the game. Despite the Jump magazine only showing 9 such designs, causing the incorrect impression that only 9 such cards were adopted.

Yeah. Sometimes I'll get lucky and manage to not get interacted with, other times I'll pull off getting Magia and MAYBE another spirit dragon, but most times it's just praying and hoping you get no interactions. Lordly Lode feels really bad to use to get another blue-eyes because it shuts off effects and prevents you from stopping nibu.

It's funny, because BEWD is in way better shape than DM. I've tried DM pure, DM with Shining Sarcophagus, DM and Primite -- I've never been able to reach Diamond with any of them (at least for as long as I've been trying, which is the last month or so). Maybe I'm doing something wrong but it's far too bricky in the shitty modern game. Primite is the best of these but even that's just getting lucky with the opening hand and being able to hide behind Primite Drillbeam while Dragon Knight preserves the backrow and Eternal Soul keeps Dragon Knight unmolested.

One cool trick is to use Secrets of Dark Magic and Primite Fusion in conjunction to milk two fusion monsters out of the same two monsters, but Dragon Knight + Dragoon aren't exactly unstoppable. 3000ATK is nothing. It also tends to exhaust your hand so Dragoon doesn't have a negate when you need it, or using its negate sacrifices the ability to use Drillbeam. It's a hard deck to keep crammed with handtraps too since it's already easy to draw dead with as it is. Pure DM doesn't have any room at all.

I'm not complaining, exactly. I honestly don't think Dark Magician suits the modern game at all conceptually. It's too good to stoop that low.
>>
>>727752707
It's stablished in universe that jaden has a universal singularity draw cheat that makes him unable to brick no matter what. Tested by science and magic.
>>
>>727753279
>shows how disingenuous
the only disingenuous one is you. it only counts when you like it. You can't even come up with a reason why it doesn't count. It just doesn't because you think it's disingenuous for not fitting your narrative.
You'll just run away, nursing your wounded pride knowing all the while that I'm right while you try to convince yourself that you have any idea what Yugioh "nowadays" even means.
Let me guess, you miss the playground days where everything wasn't clear cut and there wasn't a real "meta" and think it never existed despite evidence to the contrary. Despite how much you "liked" the game, you fell off for the past couple decades, got hyped by master duel, and walked away disappointed when you got your ass handed to you when you loaded in with your shitty 1900 beater deck.
You gave the most generic "I MISS WHEN MONSTERS WERE COOL AND SCARY" but ignore the tits waggling in your face and cute monsters like Petit Dragon and Angel when it's convenient for you.
You were never into Yugioh. You were just into whatever looked cool at the time.
>>
>>727753507
The issue is DM doesn't do enough on its own.
Primite BEWD works because Primite Dragon can become the BEWD link 1 and continue plays that way with the 2nd normal from the field spell. With that 2nd normal, sage can get you more advantage and get your engine online.

DM doesn't get that synergy, so Primite in it is just a pure cope.

The game has inarguably softened in style. I don't know how or why anyone would argue otherwise. It had cute shit, but it was often deliberately cute in contrast to the rest of the game. Older cards are absolutely more creepy and weird and more varied.

The game's structural reliance on archetypes and two turn games also means that you tend to see more of that stuff in the spotlight. Decks aren't a >>727753731

I feel genuinely bad for Dark Magician because they get some fucking awesome card art but, like blue-eyes, 95% of the archetype is useless anyway. spirit dragon's tag outs into crimson dragon are the only reason it's any good unfortunately. ultimate fusion is situationally good but only really for summoning magia.
>>
>>727753889
Its strange to me Konami doesn't push for these decks to be meta more often.

It wouldn't be hard, they did it with Yubel.
>>
>>727753714
Primite in general is kind of strange. I'm guessing Konami will give it more cards but I don't think the intended use for it (dumping a variety of normal dragons into it) really works. No surprise people just threw it in with Blue-Eyes.
>>
How does Konami vs Wizards printing work? From what ive heard konami constantly reprints so cards dont cost as much as they do in magic
>>
>>727753950
Right? it feels like they're waste a lot of designs. Ultimate Spirit and Spirit with Eyes of Blue is a step in the right direction but both DM and BE have weak to non-existent hand utility, very little to do with the graveyard, and have an extremely difficult time going second no matter what. Especially in a best of 1 scenario.

Primite's intended use is just to facilitate normal monsters required to certain plays. Blue-Eyes is the intended use of it. Even if they put more cards under the archetype, it isn't meant to be a deck on its own but an engine for many more that would make good use of Normal monsters stats, like White Duston and Fiendsmith for example.

If they ever wanna "Fix" Normal monsters, they need to print really hard to get rid of cards that have effects that scale based off how many normal monsters you have, lots of searchability, ways to recycle normal monsters, and ways to rapidly swarm the field with normal monsters.
They won't though because it'd just open up ways for effect monsters to abuse said normal monsters.

I don't think it's a matter of detail. Even the current waifu shit is often more detailed than a lot of older cards. As the manga occult influence dwindled the cards started to look more sterile, though. The older cards -- even some of the cutesier ones--tended to have heavier shading with a moodier feel because that's what Takahashi emphasized.

I think older cards are easier to apprehend too. A lot of modern cards are so cluttered it's hard to parse at that scale.

To be fair you set yourself up for a moron's reply by not listing the petit monsters which have moeblob "cute" traits they complained about in the first place.
Monsters like Mystic Elf and Lady of Faith are more "serene" than "cute", the line only really blurs with dark magician girl from the old-ish era. Harpy Ladies are a smidge edgy. I don't think leading with those examples was correct.

There are a lot more cutesy cards nowadays but that's also just because of time. They tend to stick out like a sore thumb and when some of them are meta like Ash Blossom it tends to stick in people's craw a bit.
The art design around more modern cards feels a lot more cutesy in nature, not a bad thing by itself, cute can be fine. Unfortunately the more serious cards haven't really left an impression on me in recent days so maybe the cute ones are just the only ones that stick in my head personally. That and Maxx-c through sheer infamy. Just haven't really found nu-monsters to be terribly interesting otherwise, even just looking for designs and not deck-building. It's pretty normal for the art style to decline over time like this. Happens to every IP.

OG. The angles excite me.

You mean the Battle City one, or the spinny top one Kaiba used during Duelist Kingdom?

I miss when cards just had simple effects like this. The new cards are always doing way too much.

Ya battle city.

The art for some of the older cards looks better in the anime and videogames making them seem like they're hiding detail from compression. I did a double take when coming across my Paladin of White Dragon again.

>A lot of modern cards are so cluttered it's hard to parse at that scale.
I thought it couldn't really get any worse than stuff like Guardian Kay'est but I take a break for 20 years and come back to entire landscape paintings being stuffed into this tiny ass box. Maybe they should start printing on tarot cards.

He has incredible potential.

I can't beat Dracotail without resolving Retaliating C. A pop on my turn 1 or getting something flipped face down is just too much. 90% of decks aren't going to be able to suffer through that either.

Soitsu represents the average human.
We are objectively unimpressive in output.. while being subjectively convinced we're destined for greatness.
It's literally the Dunning-Kruger effect meets procrastination meets Instagram-influenced narcissism.
Soitsu is the guy who can't keep a houseplant alive but is convinced he could've been a CEO of a billion dollar company, in a different timeline.
We are all Soitsu.

I feel like playing a modern blue-eyes deck but i don't feel like buying the primite cards ($100-ish engine, 3 structures will cost me $36 and i don't plan on joining any tournaments, i just want friendly duels), can i somehow make it work with just blue-eyes cards? I looked up some deck profiles and the starter to handtrap ratio is crazy, 15-ish engine cards and the rest is handtraps. I brick a lot with my dinosaur deck which is 80% engine, i don't even want to know how bad it'll be with blue-eyes.
