Are Lives an outdated mechanic in games now? Platformers have almost entirely got rid of them.
>>
It's only outdated because modern gamers are incapable of handling any kind of punishment for failure. See the endless kvetching about "runbacks"

they were perfect in sonic 3 and knuckles
>>
they are an outdated mechanic when you can farm lives. otherwise theyre just a mechanic.

no. see rougelites
>>
Lives are a holdover from when Arcade games were the basis for game design.
>>

I think Soulslike games should use them instead of always forcing a boss run back.
>>
90% of the reason Mario has it is people liking the 1up jingle.
>>
saving and loading in fps games is outdated too but you never see boomers bitching about it
>>
How is Vineyard taking the current mockery of Metroid? He's very emotionally-attached to it and Nintendo, so I would guess not very well.

"Lives" can be fine, the punishment of losing them and the economy around them are often what's bad

Zoomers got filtered by lives

Honestly I kind of hope he takes some time to just turn off the internet conversations and play the game for himself.
Maybe even make a back up of his save file so he can stream the rest of the game from where he left off, but take some chances to play ahead on his own.
Metroid is very important to me as well, and Prime 4 hurts to see, but I don't want to be in his chat room affecting his enjoyment of it on his first playthrough. At the same time it's also something I'd have trouble looking away from when he chooses to stream it.
Or I guess he could keep streaming his live reactions to it if that's how he wants to enjoy it

But as a lone random chat member I'm so fucking disappointed I waited 8 years for such an aggressively causalized Metroid game that repeated mistakes of Prime 3 and Other M instead of learning from them

Not for an individual level, but limited continues are. Going all the way back to level 1 is horse shit.
>>
>>727741921
You wouldn't have to go all the way back if you just played good though.
>>
>>727738368
Sekiro already did that.

git gud
>>

Yes. So is health and player damage, as a matter of fact. Games should just make you invincible, able to instantly kill enemies, and all resources formerly allocated towards combat design should instead be redirected towards telling the player how awesome and good at games they are instead.

This is the actual answer.
Limited lives was a business model. It was literally boomers' pay to win.
>>
They're fine it's just that people have fatigue from when it was basically obligatory for every single game to have them and most implemented it poorly.
I'd say mario bros 1, 3, and land are examples of games greatly elevated by a lives system. None of their levels would individually make good self-contained challenges. In 1 and land you especially feel it effect gameplay as you really care about maximizing your coins/1-ups in the early worlds
Some Indie games still use them well. I liked them in Infernax and a lot of the games within UFO 50
>>
Used to have a practical purpose, extracting as many coins as possible from kids.
Then it was a legacy hold over because that's what games just had.
Now it's a thing you can have if you want your game to.
No such thing as outdated mechanics. Just matters of taste.

Honestly yeah, Sekiro kinda toyed with the idea, but imagine a proper Soulslike where you have like 3 lives per boss attempt. Die once? Respawn right there with some kind of penalty-maybe a weaker flask or no summons. Die again? Further penalty or strip certain items. Final death? Back to the runback. Adds strategy without completely gutting tension. You'd curb the worst boss runbacks *and* make retries feel more dynamic.

Plenty of video games suck dick

They're called mans.
>I got a 1 man
>There is a 1 man over there
And so on.
I miss the patriarchy before gay sissified 'men' like OP went around sucking cock all the time and women knew better than to talk about lives or ups. What the hell is an up!?
