Stalker has spawned a whole genre of games where you wander around a chernobyl supernatural elements. What do we call this genre?
Creative bankruptcy.

Roadside Picnic-like
>>727750078Stalker-like
you mean the book didjust like how world of darkness spawns vampire games and not vtmb
>>727749784FPS
it's surprising that not a single stalker-like (and even most of the mods popular nowadays) managed to understand what made stalker specialno creepy soviet experiments, no mystery (that single instance of Lift anomaly in the Pripyat stadium is more interesting than what the entire genre of the stalker-likes can offer), no feeling of something bigger than the playable world, no actual ZONE - everyone seems to be focused on people, mutants, guns, making the Zone a vaguely related background with funny fireworks and theme park zones in some places aka arch-anomaliesto be fair, even the Clear Sky and onwards started losing the vibe and becoming simpler and more casual in both gameplay and world presentation

The only good stalker was the first one, if the sequels can’t even do better you can hardly call it a genre even if others copy. It isn’t even nostalgia, the horror, pacing, story and gameplay wise it was all better in the first one.
>>727751430My favorite is the first one too, but I like them all
>>727751103That’s the book’s name newfag
>>727750583A lot of people focus on the sci-fi shit in Stalker, but the mystical/unknowable vibes of the zone are also really important. Like, what if some of the little folklore stories told around the campfire could be real? Even if there's an in-universe scientific explanation for all the shit going on, there's always another layer you never fully grasp,
>>727751592Stalker 2 has way better story but execution suck.
>>727751726lollmao
>>727750583Its actually kind of crazy that SoC was a brooding fantasy sci fi game but since you could press Y to use slugs instead of pellets in a shotgun everyone just assumed it was supposed to be gun autism simulator and all mods eventually led it down that path.
>>727749784It'd be neat if they used the EURT as a setting. Hunt radioactive reindeero. It'd be prettier being in a river valley instead of a fucking swamp.
>>727752152Personally I think it was more all the guns you could get/trading system. While SOC was a very cool atmospheric game, a lot of the drive was to get cooler and cooler guns, of course helped by the fact you started off with the shittiest gun of all time.

>Enhanced EditionUkrainians be likeI AM NOT A RUSSIAN! I AM NOT A RUSSIAN! I AM NOT A RUSSIAN! I AM NOT A RUSSIAN! - he screams in Russian
Soviet Union was one colossal social experiment, and a largest army in the world as well. Entire country was designed for military purposes, with civilian sectors of economy considered to be insignificant. This left a colossal heritage, which was ingrained into the very minds of everyone born east of Warsaw. The closest metaphor to give an understanding to an average American is a "sleeper agent" - someone, who has orders, but doesn't understands what do they mean, why are they here, someone who doesn't even realize that his behaviour, his very thinking process has been altered, modified. Some people are more conscious, and they see the unnatural state of their mind, but they keep it to themselves. When games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are made, it's that artificial "soviet consciousness" speaking from the depth of our minds. Most people just don't realize, that these ideas are not theirs by natural means. STALKER, Paranoia, Atomic Heart, multitude of ex-Soviet media products, all have the same features. There's always "The Bunker", "The Army", "The supersoldiers/humans", "The Grand Plans", "The Experiments", isn't it?I speculate, that all this is just echoes of Cold War, because (ex)-European people also do have these ideas inside their minds. There used to be more games with these themes Prototype, Doom, Fallout... But as time goes on, these people leave, and with it their cold war brainwashing fades away from the media.
I still can't get over how fucking bad STALKER 2 is
>>727749784Why are all of them made by Ukrainians but the source material always Russian?
I tried some stalker gameran around aimlessly for a while, died to some invisible thing and had no clue what I was supposed to doI then proceeded to delete it
>>727755096You are supposed to "win", whatever that means, by any means necessary.
>>727750203Now that's some cope.
Been playing SoC and I'm surprised how good it is, it's better than a lot of modern games.
>>727755014bro pls don't say it I bought it a year ago and I am debating whether to actually play it now
>>727755337The ballistics take some getting used to but everything just falls into place after a while
Everyone who made Stalker good went over to make Metro, which is just post-apocalyptic Stalker
chornoboylvanias
>>727755479The balistics seem fine to me, not had any problems landing shots. The game is difficult at first when you just have a pistol but once you get an assault rifle shooting is fine as long as you crouch and use cover. Running and gunning isn't good but it's not a run and gun type of game.

I need guidance. Recently had this stalker gamma video pop up in my recommended. Game actually seemed like a very good sandbox. I type in stalker, a bunch of games show up and when I google which is better the opinions are mixed. Should I just go with gamma? I want a challenge and I haven't played a good fps in a while.
>>727749784Ziggercube-like
>>727755913sure, if you don't expect a story and like tedium
>>727755913GAMMA is just a sand box, it has missions but not a story. The original stalker games have a main story and side missions. If you just want a challenge and not bothered about the story play Gamma. If you want a game with a main story play the stalker games, they aren't as challenging as GAMNA but still harder than most games.
>>727755965>don't expect a storyIs the slavslop story in the other ones really that good?
>play GAMMA>hit the 65k item limit not even halfway into the run because I'm a hoarder>consistent crashes on every level transitionShame
>>727756045I actually quite liked the story in 2. Korshunov was great, and it was fun seeing all the old protags come back, especially schizo Scar
>>727755913gamma has a bunch of shit you might not like, but usually those who never tried stalker like gamma overall. if you have autism try modding stalker anomaly yorself
Why have none of these modders modded the graphics for the original games like they have with gamma? See some mod packs for the original games but none of them have graphics as good as gamma.I would like to mod the graphics of the original games but apart from hi res textures there does seem to be any graphics overhauls.
>>727751050Misery

>>727749784>>727749818its honestly surprising no one has innovated from the ideas. they just copy paste. no new interesting anomalies, just spicy gravity air.

>>727750583This.Creepy soviet and post-soviet experiments, anomalies, hazardous areas traversal, spatial puzzles that can be solved through anomalies, exploration - that is the meat and gravy. Instead its>guns>more guns>some sloppy monsters>even more guns>muh factionsI hate it. Monsters as by-product of experiments and anomalies are fine, even some unique or one-of-a-kind ones, but the way things go you would think that there are whole farms breeding snorks/fleshes/dogs/etc just for stalkers to have something to shoot at. Same with factions and spawns - instead of it being a foreboding, creepy, silent place where one can easily die to anomalies or even simple shit like dehydration and lack of clean food, its a PMC team-deathmatch 24/7 zone with some hazardous obstacles. They all fail, stalker 2 more so too, at being a grounded post-soviet sci-fi with accent on exploration, science, mysticism, and hazards of the unknown/mystic.
Kiev.
>>727751726Kinda true. However, its not close to ShoC - that one had folk tales like a psi-shielding bucket, discovering scientist chick, drinking vodka into stupor to confuse a controller. Then again, the poppy field in S2 is kinda neat, but that is pretty much the only instance of stuff.

>>727773604No. Gluhovsky so a hack . 4A surpassed the book thousandfold, just like the Witcher series. Stolger is a rare franchise where the source material is actually amazing , on par with the game ( in its own right)
>>727773760I'm pretty sure the main Character of Roadside Picnic had a gun that he shot mutated dogs with, if I'm not misremembering. It's been 18 years since I read it
>>727774138You are. The main character even calls out a rookie for bringing a gun into the Zone. The Zone is death trap where physics behave in completely unpredictable ways, but there is nothing there that a weapon would protect you against.
Wish more mods would make use of the multiplayer maps. Feels like a waste.

>>727749784Chernobyl-likes are the truest interpretation of the genre. Chernobyl-lites are a shit genre that removes all the enjoyable parts of the game. I don't know why the lite tards are the way they are but they're ruining the genre.
>>727774042>Gluhovsky so a hackAbsolutely, he is a one-hit wonder. But 2033 had excellent atmosphere and worlbuilding that the game just straight up squandered.
>>727767224I played a shit ton of games. I want a challenge. I didn't play a souls befor elden ring but still understood it after a while.
>>727755463it's shit, i wouldn't bother. play anomaly/GAMMA

>>727776262What do you mean? The only thing Metro took from Picnic is the term "stalker", other than that they are nothing alike. Tarkovsky's Stalker, sure, but not Picnic.

I finished Call of Pripyat 2 days ago. All that lead up to get into Pripyat and it's the most empty area with the most cutscene hand-holding. Yikes. I'm wondering if I should bother with Clear Sky.Yes I played them out of order.
>>727775772GAMMA is multiple layers deep in the shit cake that is "overhauls" and should not be your first experience with Stalker. If the "sandbox zone" thing sounds cool and you dont care about the story of the mainline games, just play Anomaly, it's free, it's a one click install. What you should do is play all of the original games in order, the story is great and discovering the mysteries of the Zone is very well paced. You'll be missing out on a lot of intended experiences and moments if you jump head first into a mod overhaul.
>>727776262It's a known fact that 2033 initially was just a Fallout fanfic set in the Moscow subway
>>727777485Bruherino, I just spent an obsecenely long amount of time getting this mod to work. Gamma it is all the way baby.
>>727778973When you inevitably come out the other side of GAMMA bitching and moaning about X and Y mechanic, remind yourself you're talking about GAMMA then and not STALKER as a whole.GAMMA is so far removed from what a real STALKER game is it might as well drop the STALKER part of the name.

>>727751726i actualy liked how the ward path was not "you sold of to le bad corpos" witch i was afraid it would be too bad the map pathing is whacky as fuck as you roam from one end of zone to another instead of unlocking parts of map gradualyas soon as you leave first smaller zone you can just go to yaniv / cement factory to buy mid-late armor or just go to spot with the strong armor and get it early. i guess repair cost supose to balance it out
>>727781731Anon believes that Metro 2035, the third novel in the series, is better than Exodus, the game that was very loosely based on it. Hope this helps.
Why is the combat and gunplay in these games so awful?
>>727786383Ward path was definitely my favorite and it didn't feel like a completely worthless outcome. Everyone else was just crazy in different ways, it just didn't feel right to side with any of the other psychos.
