You don't need to interpret "Cetra" to be a designation of status (in terms of connection to the Planet) for a human, which was the easier interpretation before Nojima chose differently.

I want to believe they want to save that for part 3 and use it as a characterization prop like barret sunglasses, like to change from Cid stressed to Cid in peace. But i dont know, i fear that he wont have a cigarette at all.The rest is just the same except we dont really know his backstory just yet. In fact the reason why they added the whole "i knew ifalna" thing was to 1. have him be part of Aerith funeral somewhat and 2. He needs to have some reason to "join" the party. In the original he doesnt really join for a good reason and he doesnt do anything until you get the highwind. Cid also doesnt really beat or yell at the party members randomly, when you meet him he's just a passionate pilot, he explains to you the story of his rocket and stuff. Key word being "passionate" here. Those aspects translate easily into rebirth, he's cocky, confindent and love his skies, and the tiny bronco breaks down, he's happy to repair it and try again. Sadly people remember Cid more for screaming at Shera as if he was 100% angry all the time. Even the highwind crew said they heard of Cid and how he was a kind captain, and they were right. He also advices tifa regarding Cloud being missing and he's generally just nice.

In the remake they explicitly state that they need more Cetras to avoid getting them extinct and that they dont know if Aerith will live until they find the promise land (she might also escape eventually) so to reduce the risk, they have Aerith be bred, and they prefer strong candidates to breed her.Hojo later implies also that they want to hit the spirit as well so he might even suggest to have Soldiers rape her or gangbang her.
